$20 Game of the Week: Choplifter HD (PC, PSN, XBLA)

choplifterhd

Choplifter HD is a remake of the classic bullet hell game. Taking control of an up and coming rookie pilot, you are tasked with getting civilians to safety under hellacious conditions. You’ll have to take on enemies both on the ground and in the air as you take civilians to safety. You’ll also have to deal with dwindling fuel and munitions, as you’ll have to restock frequently. Doing well in each mission earns you stars for each mission, and eventually upgrades for your copter. The game starts out easy, but gets challenging as you progress. Regardless of if you played the classic Choplifter, or this is your first introduction to the franchise, Choplifter HD is a fun and challenging update of a classic.

Pacific Rim cancels the apocalypse with footage from Wonder-Con

Warner Bros. has released a trailer that was meant only for those who attended WonderCon. Guillermo Del Toro left this note in the video description:

This was originally intended for only WonderCon, but after listening to so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it’s time for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!
– Guillermo del Toro

Pacific Rim comes to theaters on July 12th. Let the countdown commence!

C2E2 2013: X-Men: Battle of the Atom announced

XMenBattleOfTheAtom_Teaser_Banner.

A new major event was announced for the X-Men at C2E2 this weekend by Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron and Brian Wood. X-Men: Battle of the Atom pits some time travelling X-Men from the future against the original X-Men from the past, leaving the X-Men of today caught in the middle. Sound confusing? It sure does to me! The event will happen in September and October of this year, which marks the 50th anniversary of mutant mayhem. X-Men #1 came out in September 1963.

The story will be told in the following books:
X-Men Battle of the Atom #1
Uncanny X-Men #12-13
All-New X-Men #16-17
Wolverine & The X-Men #36-37
X-Men # 5-6
X-Men: Battle of The Atom #2

Details seemed a bit light beyond the above description, but we did get to see some concept art by Art Adams. Most of the images show the future X-Men including Beast, who has gone through further mutations, a grown up Molly Hayes from the Runaways, a female Xorn, a kid Wolverine with blue skin, red hair and stubby claws (did Logan shack up with Mystique?), an Ice Hulk (future Ice Man?), Deadpool and an unknown character at this time (This guy’s concept art was released by accident. He is a surprise character. Hint: The file name had ‘ProfX’ in it). The future team will apparently be led by Kate Pryde (Day of Future’s Past anyone?)

Major Nelson made a blog post revealing that May 21, 2013 will herald the reveal of the third generation XBox.

Here is the announcement of the announcement:

On Tuesday May 21st, we’ll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment. On that day, we’ll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox LIVE and Xbox.com. If you are in the US or Canada, you can also watch the broadcast on Spike TV.

On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we’ve been working on.

Rumors have been flying around that the next generation console will be called XBox Infinity due to some possible leaked logo images. We will know for sure on May 21st!

Lost Classics: McKids (NES)

mckids

The early days of this past console generation saw something that we would rather forget about (but secretly loved): Burger King made it’s debut in video games. Not content with simply having it’s creepy-looking mascot appear as a trainer in Fight Night Round 3, the franchise released a series of games centered around its fast food products. You could pick them up for $3.99 with any value meal. It was admittedly a cool promotion, even if the games were crap. Of course, this isn’t the first time fast food has partnered with video games. The unholy alliance of french fries and digital gaming first manifested itself back in 1988, with the Japan-only Donald Land, a Famicom game in which players controlled McDonald’s mascot Ronald McDonald in a side-scrolling Mario rip-off. 4 years later, Virgin Interactive would release M.C Kids, also based on the fast food franchise. This game was released in North America, and it was actually a pretty decent platformer. You play as one of two kids named Mick and Mack. The Hamburgular has stolen Ronald McDonald’s magic bag, and the kids have to retrieve it. You’ll explore several different worlds, finding hidden secrets, and throwing blocks at enemies to defeat them. Despite the McDonalds license, the game features none of the fast food chain’s products, so unlike the Burger King games, you get the feeling of this being a semi-polished platformer rather than a glorified ad for McDonalds.

Rights to Daredevil in film have reverted back to Marvel Studios

Daredevil Born Again

Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, has confirmed in an interview with Newsarama that the rights to Daredevil, the Man Without Fear, have reverted back to Marvel Studios.

It was reported that Fox Studios had a deadline of October 10, 2012 in order to retain the rights to the character. It was widely believed that the deadline was missed, but no official word came out until Mr. Feige’s comments at an Iron Man 3 press junket. Daredevil is not the first Marvel character whose rights have reverted back to Marvel Studios. The Punisher and Blade are on that list as well. Fox still retains the rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Spider-Man and Ghost Rider remain with Sony. The rights to these properties can all revert back to Marvel Studios if no film is in active development by a certain deadline for each. These agreements were all made prior to the formation of Marvel Studios in 2006.

Thor: The Dark World UK trailer released

Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor in Thor: The Dark World.
From IMDB:

Thor battles an ancient race of Dark Elves led by the vengeful Malekith who threatens to plunge the universe back into darkness after the events of The Avengers.

Natalie Portman also returns as Jane Foster.
Thor: The Dark World is due out in theaters on November 8, 2013.

Though, I think Thor was the weakest of the first phase of movies, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I am very much looking forward to the sequel’s release and anticipate that only increasing once Iron Man 3 is released.
