Powet Alphabet: O is for Odiphus

Many who are familiar with the Masters of the Universe franchise are familiar with the diverse and comical cast of villains. Many of the characters in general were named pretty obviously; Fisto had a big fist, Skeletor had a skull for a head, Tri-klops had 3 eyes, Webstor was a big spider guy, Ninjor was a ninja and Spikor was a henchman with lots of spikes. The people naming these characters should have taken the moniker Masters of the Obvious. Not to be outdone by those examples, though, they went ahead and named an anthropomorphic skunk, Stinkor.

DC drops comic prices to 2.99 for 2011

DC Comics’ Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan Didio dropped a bomb on us today, announcing that all 32 page books would be dropping from US$3.99 to US$2.99 for 2011. The price change takes effect January 1st and affects a grand majority of DC’s current offerings. The Co-Publishers had this to say:

As Co-Publishers, we listened to our fans and to our partners in the retail community who told us that a $3.99 price point for 32 pages was too expensive. Fans were becoming increasingly reluctant to sample new titles and long term fans were beginning to abandon titles and characters that they’d collected for years.” said Dan DiDio, DC Comics Co-Publisher. “We needed a progressive pricing strategy that supports our existing business model and, more importantly, allows this creative industry to thrive for years to come. With the exceptions of oversized comic books, like annuals and specials, we are committed to a $2.99 price point.

Transformers Collectors Club reveals Sideburn, Membership freebie for 2011

The Transformers Collector’s Club has revealed new official images of their club membership freebie figure for 2011. To get your chance at owning this figure, all you need to do is join the club before March 16, 2011 and you will automatically qualify to receive this free figure. If you join after March 16, then you will be eligible for the next year’s figure which will be announced somewhere down the road, probably a year from now, if I had to guess.

Emma Stone to play Gwen Stacy in Spider-man reboot, not Mary Jane Watson

In this week’s PowetCast, we referred to a news article on i09 suggesting that Emma Stone was likely to play Mary Jane Watson in the rebooted Spider-man film. The more I thought about this casting, the more perfect I thought it was, especially after the poor casting of Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane in the former Spider-man films. In a complete reversal of this news, though, Marvel.com has announced that Emma Stone will, in fact, be playing GWEN STACY, and not Mary Jane Watson. Emma will be playing opposite Andrew Garfield, who will be portraying Peter Parker/Spider-man. You may be familiar with Emma Stone from Easy A, currently in theaters, and the fantastic Zombieland.

It seems that they are doing things right by getting Gwen Stacy in the story first, but I’m disappointed Emma Stone won’t be playing Mary Jane. I think the part fits her quite well. Also, my mind keeps asking the question why they casted a blonde for redhead Mary Jane in the previous films, while casting a redhead for blonde Gwen Stacy? Kind of a moot point, but I needed to type that out loud, or whatever I just did there.

Complete Reboot series finally being released on DVD

I had some happy news in my inbox this morning in the form of a press release from Shout! Factory and Rainmaker Entertainment (formerly Mainframe Entertainment). It appears that the first fully CGI animated series, Reboot, will finally be released as a complete series set. Currently only seasons 3 and 4 are available on DVD and go for ridiculous sums of money on e-bay. It looks like we’ll see the complete series box set sometime in 2011, followed by some sort of ‘digital distribution’. That sounds to me like they may put individual episodes up for sale on iTunes/Amazon/Netflix, but thats pure speculation.

You may recall that we covered Reboot in our weekly Powet Alphabet feature here:
