Gaming Archaeology: Totaka’s Song, Part 3

One of Nintendo’s music composers, Kazumi Totaka, likes to hide a certain signature tune in the deepest, darkest crannies of his games. For details on the established facts, check out Part 1 and Part 2 of our coverage on the subject.

Today, we bring you a brand-new viewer-submitted discovery from within Luigi’s Mansion, a game previously previously held as my white whale.

Also: a nod to Wii Sports. Let’s all go dissect it.

It varies from 2:10 up to 3:50, but with a straight progression. The longer wait times are the more recent ones.

Phil: oh that’s right, I forgot about those. (Not sure where the song could possibly be, does X on GB have password continue? That might help narrow it down.)

As for the additional Link’s Awakening song, don’t you get an ocarina/recorder/flute of some sort at one point? To me that hidden clip sounds like it’s being played via recorder/ocarina. So maybe that plays into it?

“For the Frog the Bell Tolls” has already been cracked, we just don’t have a copy. Maybe I’ll try to get an emulator running before someone figures out Wii Sports.

Phil, you mention hackers have found the song in the ROM of a game? How did they find this?

What is the sequence of data? is it the same in all games? If so, can it used as file/hex search criteria?

Well I checked ‘X’ on gamefaqs, all I found was a link on the boards for ‘The Great Totaka’s Song Search’ Ep. 2 (which references X)

I had never heard of this site before today, when I stumbled upon a link to it from Joystiq. After watching all the installments regarding Totaka’s song, I have now officially bookmarked the site. This is one of the most interesting things I’ve heard of in a long time.

this is all fun .. this is all great .. but one day we are gonna wake up and find out that there has to be a deeper meaning to this than your typical easter egg hunt … i think im going to propose to the musicians community at SectionZ.com to see what if anything they can find in these 19 notes … i tried a couple of tricks with it myself, playing in reverse .. giving it a 19 step echo, comparing it to Japan’s national anthem .. speeding it up 19%, 190% but nothing is jumping out at me .. BUT THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING!

i would have just assumed it was a quirk but after seeing the compilation videos and even the most recent luigi version the track stays faithful as though to indicate some kind of primer has yet to be found .. I mean COME ON .. Nintendo is after all a puzzle maker.

I could swear that if you leave Luigi standing still in an empty room in Luigis mansion he will start to whistle the song after a period of time.

As Deekman, after hearing the tune a few times on the video, Luigi’s Mansion popped into my memories, and I was quite sure I heard the music within the game, probably whistled.

But I can be wrong (I haven’t played LM for a long time).

I just heard it!

I sent off an email to you Phil!

In Wii Sports, if you go to “Training” and then for bowling go to “Power Throw”, the song is playing faintly behind the background music. If you let it sit long enough or take to long to throw the ball it pops out.

Can someone confirm this? My cousins don’t want to sit around and listen for this, they would rather play the game.

I just gave that power bowling one a go, and as expected, didn’t find it. I should also note that the background music is the same for all three bowling games anyway. I waited approx ten minutes before giving up, because as far as I’m aware, Totaka sure wouldn’t hide it for longer than that… right?

Hi Phil & all, I’ve really enjoyed watching these and learning all about the easter eggs. You’ve probably already referenced this, but here’s the Mobygames developer sheet for Kazumi Totaka listing games he’s done and his role in them. This page is automatically updated as people contribute credits information into the database with his name in them. I hope it helps in your search.

I’m sure this information is already detailed by now on wikipedia, I look forward to seeing someone contribute it to our little site as trivia on the appropriate games. And if not… well, these informative videos have told us all EXACTLY where to look. Thanks Phil!

I have heard Luigi whistiling in Luigi’s mansion, but it was the theme of the game he was whistling, not Totaka’s theme. They have similarities though, and I think people are confusing the two in their memories.

By the way, the notes for the two different versions of the song that I’ve heard are:

Short version:

Long version:

Just some things I want to mention about the notes:

1. # is a sharp sign if you didn’t know (ex. A#=A sharp)

2. The upper case note are the middle octave, while the lower case notes are the high octave.

3. The long version was heard in the Animal Crossing E-Reader card for Jack, the pumpkin headed guy.

4. I’ve heard the song in the middle octave, one octave lower, and one octave higher in various games.

May, I will tell you EXACTLY what is wrong. Luigi never hums or whistles the Totaka song. NEVER. we’ve checked it. We checked it RECENTLY. the only people who EVER suggest that he whistles or hums the song are folk who say “I haven’t played the games in months/years” I personally have feilded this tip more times than I can count, and Phil probably more than double what I took in.

So you’re going to have to trust us. Totaka’s song was found in Luigi’s Mansion at this spot, but ONLY THIS SPOT. No hum, no whistle
