Famicom Dojo – Episode 03 – Nintendo Has Moxie
Show notes (and an explanation for those left scratching their heads) after the jump:
Show notes (from Vinnk):
The “old man” otherwise known as “Grandpappy” is the first original character for Famicom Dojo. In a way he is meant to offset the constant facts this show usually presents, but also he is an extension of us. You see sometime we as gamers who have been playing since the Atari days and grew up eating Donkey Kong Cereal feel a bit like the old man. When these young wiper snappers whose first Mario game was “New Super Mario Bros.” come along we feel the need to tell them about all the classics they missed. The old man is in many ways what I fear we will become someday.
As for the old man’s costume. It is a pair of gray slacks pulled up past my waist, a cheap Santa beard left over from Christmas, a gray sweater that has seen better days, and a “Red Green: Duct Tape Forever” cap. I didn’t have suspenders so I took the straps off my laptop bag and clipped them to my slacks.
It was about 95 degrees when I filmed this and I had to turn the AC off because the wind was bothering the sound recording. It was recorded in segments and twice I had to take off the costume, shower, and then go back to filming.
The art was done by 4cr staff member Mitch. He had done little doodles for 4cr posts in the past and I asked if he could do some more based of my script for the old man segment. I just needed something to break up my long and visually uninteresting monologue. What he gave me was far beyond my expectations. These drawings are hilarious and fit the theme perfectly. One is my desktop wallpaper right now.

This is a quite different from our first two episodes and we are very anxious to hear what you think about it.

he’s also talks to himself in his head and imagines wild scenarios in vivid detail.

This man looks like my babysitter back in the day. Man, I HATED HER!!!
PLEASE!!! Don’t make me see her again! It hurt my brain with stupidity!
Oh but the rest was super funny!

Please don’t bring Pappy back ever again, I think he just kills the show(I admit, this instalment sucked and was completely ruined because of him). By the way, I’d like it if you make mention of the redesigned consoles(A/V Family Computer and top-loader Nintendo Entertainment System like the one in the background(A/V modded or not?) and on Famiclones(cloned systems, especially the new ones that just came out, maybe have a show comparing the most popular Famiclones against real systems) in later instalments of the show.

Ah yes — I placed that top-loader there purposefully. We’ll get to it this season, I think. We’ll definitely hit upon as many other things as we can along the way, but we’ll be working forward-only as we do so.
As for Pappy, some moderation might be in order, certainly offset by some things that are actually true. Poor old coot can’t catch a break…

Show was pretty funny, but I definitely prefer the first two. It’s nice having all that Famicon knowledge packed into those really well done little segments. So although that was a nifty change of pace, I must say I’d rather see the old episodes. Great job though!

Sweet… I keep on running after those but have never been able to find one. By the way, I’m pretty sure your response to the “talking game systems” was a sarcastic remark(was it?). Who does the voices for the systems anyways?
August 29th, 2007 on 11:43 pm
It’s common knowledge that the Famicom Disk System had a ton of pirated games made for it, mainly ones of an adult nature. So how were such games marketed and how did the designers not get caught? Was it not as “that” well known of the existence of “these” types of games, or did Nintendo try and do something and fail? Thanks and keep up the great work.

Man… this one sucked.
I mean HARD. Seriously, keep away from the crappy “flashback” stuff. It’s not funny, it’s not original, it’s not worth it.
I hope the “real” part 3 of the series is better, cause this one was just awful.
September 3rd, 2007 on 6:22 pm
Sorry bro. This is definitely not Famicom Dojo’s finest hour. I loved the illustrations during “grandpappy’s” rant, but just about everything else was lackluster. I enjoyed the original format much more.
By the way, what became of the whole Neo-Geo bit we saw in Ep.2?

Those 3 eps. were awesome so far, keep up the good work!

Good job on this episode. I can’t help but feel that this felt somewhat, weaker. Pappy was a nice funny touch, but you think you guys will tell Nintendo’s tale since 1889 when it was a card game company? And do you think you guys can talk about the Famiclones like Sharp’s? I would really love to know. Please make the next episode as soon as possible!

I hate to admit it, but terrible. Absolutely terrible. It was boring, uninteresting, had no facts whatsoever, and stank of “I’m running out of ideas!”. Please go back to the old ones, and never do one like this again.
