GI Joe 2006 Collector’s Convention Overview

Last weekend was not only an American holiday, but it was also the GI Joe Collectors’ Convention down in New Orleans. Since there was plenty of coverage, I thought I’d try to pull together what I could from different sources and put it all in one place for your reviewing pleasure.

After the jump you will see all my findings. Enjoy.

On set with Michael Bay and Transformers

baydirecting.jpgOver at Ain’t It Cool News Quint spends a day in the desert with Michael Bay.
He goes into great detail about his set visit at Holloman Air Force Base while shooting an attack scene featuring Scorponok. Scorponok erupts from the ground sending soldiers flying as they struggle to call in for back up. Quint informs us there were a lot of explosions.
He also describe’s Scorponok’s tail, as it was one of the few peices constructed:

I walked up to the tail laying on the ground, the non-pointy end buried in the sand. It was silver metal, almost like links in a chain as it got shorter and shorter until it got to the spear-tip. The tip had 4 nasty looking barbs all hooked with a giant skewer barb that would thrust out between the 4 barbs.

Bay also shot a video introduction for the official site, and hopes to have an animatic of a Transformer up there pending Paramount approval.

This Week In Halo

zanzibar.jpgMajor Nelson once again informs us that Halo 2 is the most played game on Xbox Live, even beating out 360 shooters like GR:AW, Perfect Dark, and Call Of Duty.
Bungie Weekly Update this week focuses on the nearly-in-our-hands graphic novel, as the first books roll off the press.
Theres also a Wallpaper contest going with forum members making their own Hi-Res desktop pictures.
Single Play and Multiplayer tests and Bungie continue, and they Frankie reports that they have a new user interface that fixes many of the problems with Halo 2. Which is dandy, because “Quick Options” didn’t have enough options, and control and headset settings were buried too far into menus to make them useful to make a quick adjustment in game without getting shot at least 3 times.
In other news, my Xbox Live account renewed today. My gamer tag is “FakeTrout” and I will be up for Team Swat tonight.

Review: “Why Try Harder?” The Best of Fatboy Slim

whytryharder.jpgFatboy Slim survived the late 90s fascination with techno by creating a big beat sound that… well crap I don’t know how he survived, but it was long enough to compile a greatest hits record.

The opening salvo of “Rockafeller Skank” lets you know pretty much exactly what you’re in for. Fast, fun dance music bouncing along with a refrain repeated to the point that you can sing along by 30 seconds into the cut even if you’ve never heard the song before.

It is kind of amazing how well “Weapon Of Choice” holds up as a track on its own without the video of Christopher Walken dancing along. But after “Praise You,” “Going Out Of My Head,” and sped-up remix of “Brimful of Asha” by Cornershop whiz by, the second half of the record fall off. I suppose part of the problem is that there was no radio format available to play these more recent singles, but they also don’t seem to resonate as “hits” though “Demons” and the new track included “That Old Pair Of Jeans” do show some growth into creating some real songs instead of just mindless head bobbing music (no matter how fun the head bobbing is).

Its summer time. This is your opportunity to get in the car with the sunroof down and holla “Right about now, Funk Soul Brother!” at others. And don’t feel guilty if you want to listen to the same track more than once.

Congdon off Rocketboom

oh no, upside down map!Amanda Congdon is now the former host of the web’s most popular vlog, RocketBoom.
Theres obviously a difference in the story present on the front page of the site and the one Amanda herself describes. Andrew Barron, the other part owner of the site says the show will go on with a replacement.
We here at Powet.tv wish Amanda the best of luck. Our show would not exist if Rocketboom had not proved people would watch a show on the web that wasn’t a silly flash game or video game characters cursing at each other. Best of luck to remaining Rocketboom staff and correspondants as well. I can hope this split (as nasty as it may seem now) yeilds new opportunities for all.
Amanda has posted a video that we all know won’t be her last.
