How To Be A Better Gamer

Courtesy the good folks at Video Gaiden, a video game show on BBC Scotland. Rab leads a rant on gamer stereotypes, the truth behind them, and what you can do to break them.

Did you know BBC Scotland had a video game show? Its quite good, and you can find many segments online. I don’t suppose a US channel would step up to import something like this, or maybe show it on BBC America?

Cameron and Manson team up for 3D music video

Bloody Disgusting reports on the next project to be released from Director James Cameron. Its not Avatar, its not Jesus, its Marylin Manson.

Marylin Manson will release a new album soon titled “Eat Me, Drink Me” and the man himself has conceptualized another shocking video for the track “Heart Shaped Glasses.” Academy Award winner Cameron filmed the clip using his new favorite 3D technology so you at home can feel like you’re in a bloody sex scene. Watch a short clip at YouTube, but not when your boss is around.

Robot Chicken does Star Wars

In honor of the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars, Cartoon Network’s Robot Chicken will dedicate an entire episode toward the film classic.

CNN reports that its got George Lucas involved, as well as Mark Hamill who will reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in the stop motion animated satire. The rest of the voice cast is decidedly un-Star Wars, with Conan O’Brien, Joey Fatone, and Hulk Hogan. Lucasfilm will also provide the authentic sound files for Chewbacca and R2D2.

WOLVERINE! …and the the x-men

wolverineandthexmen1.jpg
Well at least they’re being upfront about it.

wolverineandthexmen.jpgThis is a promotional image that popped up online on Omelete.com for some reason. A new animated series for the X-Men has been in the works for some time, and we’d heard they would “focus” on Wolverine, but I didn’t imagine he’d get top billing like that. Take a look at Xavier in the background. He’s got new legs like Lt Dan.

Where is there room for the other major X-men players? Will there even be any character development for secondary characters? I realize thats a lot to assume from a single image, but they’re the ones who put Wolverine in 400 pt font.

Marvel is producing this themselves, not unlike the Avengers or Iron Man movies they’ve already released. Steve Blum will play Wolverine, no word yet if he’ll use the same voice he always uses in every role he’s ever played.

Blue Dragon anime coming to US

bluedragonanime.jpg
Blue Dragon is a game for Xbox 360 I’ve had my eye on for a while. Why?

The original game is the first time that Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest character designer and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, and Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu have collaborated since the classic roleplaying game Chrono Trigger. The game debuted in Japan on December 7, 2006, and will arrive in America on August 15, 2007.

Yes, while Chrono Cross never met my expectations for a sequel, and Chrono Break never happened, this is as close to a follow up as I may ever get to one of the greatest games ever made. This is not opinion, this is fact.

Anyway, Blue Dragon is getting fleshed out with a matching anime series thats just started airing in Japan this month. VIZ Media has announced they’re bringing it to the US, though theres no timetable as to when we can expect subs&dubs to be released. I’d imagine that given the Toriyama pedigree this show has and the push Microsoft has already made for the game that TV airings may be possible. I don’t know if this will be more of an afternoon kids show or something we’d have to leave for Adult Swim though.

So do you like anime based on games? Will Blue Dragon possibly meet Chrono Trigger fans expectations? Can the world possible resist more Toriyama character designs? Leave a comment below.

TV Shows About Games

This is not Morgan Webb. This is not Adam Sessler.

X-play is the gold standard. Its still the most popular show on G4 and was one of the most popular on its previous home TechTV. Why not? When gamers turn off their boxes, they often turn to game news in magazines and on the internet, so its only appropriate they be able to see games on TV too.

But its hardly without competition, and it many cases its surpassed. If you’re still watching X-Play religiously because you think its the only show on TV talking about games (G4’s clusterhump “Attack Of The Show” does not count), you’d be missing out on more informative, more balanced, and in some cases, funnier shows. Allow me to focus on some of X-Play’s direct competitors, shows with similar production values and connections to the industry.

Doctor Who Animated – The Infinite Quest

Doctor Who - The Infinite Quest
Coinciding with Saturday’s airing of the series 3 premiere of Doctor Who the first episode of a new animated Doctor Who series “The Infinite Quest” aired yesterday as part of Totally Doctor Who. Coming in at a mere 3 minutes and 30 seconds there’s not much to say but I’ll give you a spoiler driven synopsis anyway.

Doctor Who - The Infinite Quest - BaltazarThe villain Baltazar is cruising through space on his ship that he built himself, talking to a robot bird named Caw, as he arrives to Earth. The Doctor and Martha show up in the Tardis. Baltazar explains that he’s going to turn everyone on Earth into diamonds. The Doctor takes out a rusty spoon which rusts the ship away, he frees Caw from his cage with his sonic screwdriver and then he and Martha escape in the TARDIS apparently going to Copacabana beach. Baltazar is left flying around through space on Caw.
