William Shatner and Carrie Fisher’s Flame War

Princess Leia kissing Captain James T. Kirk

It’s Flame War Central as the eternal question of Star Trek vs. Star Wars heats up with celebrities representing both franchises lashing out with Internet videos attacking each other! It’s no coincidence that this happens so soon after the Powetcast episode 109: Star Wars vs. Star Trek dropped, as I got inspiration to do this show after watching William Shatner’s original video “Star Trek v Star Wars” a while back.

In the original video, William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series, calls out Star Wars as being derivative and argues there isn’t really any comparison. This prompted Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the good Star Wars movies, to respond with her own video “Star Wars is SOOO Much Better than Star Trek“, where she argues various silly things to support her franchise being superior such as better merchandising and her hot ass. Finally Shatner has come back with his latest “Dearest Carrie…” where he retaliates and mocks Star Wars for being nothing but effects.

Keep reading for thoughts and the videos in question.

Disney Releases Second Trailer For John Carter

Our interest of course began when we heard one of Pixar’s brightest was making his live action debut, but after the first trailer, we got excited.

Now Disney has released a second trailer, highlighting more action and far more Martian creatures. The first teaser contained a symphonic excerpt of “My Body Is A Cage” by Peter Gabriel, and this one is much more recognizable “Kashmir” originally recorded by Led Zepplin and preformed in this clip by the classical quartet Bond.

This Means War starring William Shatner, James T. Kirk, and Patrick Stewart, Jean Luc Picard

You may have heard about this Spy vs. Spy movie “This Means War” starring Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, so what’s so special about these stars? Well Chris Pine plays Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot and Tom Hardy played a clone of Jean Luc Picard, Praetor Shinzon, in Star Trek Nemesis. If Hollywood casting is correct, this movie might as well star William Shatner and Sir. Patrick Stewart!

Which movie would you rather see?

Studio Ghibli makes “The Littles” Anime film

The Secret World of Arrietty, a remake of The Littles

Check out this trailer for “The Secret World of Arrietty”, a new movie which is coming to North America in February 2012. The film is by Studio Ghibli and the screenplay is written by Hayao Miyazaki, director of good movies like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Laputa: Castle in the Sky and bad movies like Ponyo.

The dub will star David Henrie and Bridgit Mendler, who play on again, off again couple Justin and Juliet in the Wizards of Waverly Place. It’s not easy being in love when one of you is a Wizard and the other is a Vampire who turned old after being bit by a Werewolf and then being young again. There are actually 2 dubs, the British version stars Saoirse Ronan, from Hanna and Tom Holland, from nothing I’ve ever heard of.

Is Pixar’s first female lead in “Brave” praise worthy?

Pixar's Brave

The trailer for “Brave” has just just been released. The movie features a defiant heroine who goes against her parents’ wishes and does what is considered to be a man’s job! How progressive! The film is being praised for being Pixar’s first movie with a female lead… but why is this praiseworthy? Welcome to the 1960s. To me this only demonstrates that every other Pixar film to date has been excessively male centric.

Being impressed with such a progressive character is incredibly outdated. Female leads in movies are great, and there are far too few, but praising a studio who hasn’t done this sooner is ludicrous. Pixar is not doing anything that other movies with it’s same target demographic haven’t done. Let’s look at recent Disney movies for comparison. Disney’s latest film, Tangled, had a female lead who was strong, defied convention, did her down thing and even kicked tons of ass, though with a frying pan. Brave seems like little more than a rehash of Mulan, itself from 1998. Are we really breaking new ground 13 years later by doing the exact same thing?
