MTV’s Call for Geeks

Are you a fanboy or fangirl? Would you like a shot at your 15 minutes of fame? Are you ok with millions of people seeing just how big of a dorky otaku you really are?

Then MTV and Anime-Expo want you!

Anime-Expo, the largest anime convention on the west coast, has seemingly teamed up with MTV to showcase geeks on an episode of their reality TV show, “True Stories”. The only stipulations of entry are that you must be between the ages of 16 and 28, and you *must* be identified as a true fanboy/fangirl of any one thing or genre in geekdom. I can only guess that the latter requirement is to guarantee that only the biggest freaks will be chosen and make the rest of us look bad.

Applicants can sign up for the chance to be showcased on the Anime Expo website. No deadline for sign-up is given, but the MTV website says that episodes will be filmed and debuted soon, so I can only guess the window of opportunity is short.

The prospects of this seem truly terrifying if you think about it. Or terrifyingly hilarious. One or the other. I look forward to seeing the results with a slight sense of dread.

Meanwhile, Vinnk went to TGS

Arrows! Arrows everywhere!

Even though it’s still Thursday here in the States, the second day of the Tokyo Game Show is already well under way. I wasn’t able to attend this year, but Famicom Dojo is still being represented by Vinnk — assisted by two new equally-as-foreign-but-much-more-female companions! (You can check out their profiles over at 4 Color Rebellion.)

Vinnk on the scene the first day of TGS for the announcement of the No More Heroes sequel: Desperate Struggle:

Quite appropriate, as we tried out the original game in our Famicom Dojo Special about the first day of TGS 2007!

Powet.tv at Otakon 2008

Powet.tv at Otakon 2008
A number of Powet.tv members have been attending Otakon for a few years. What follows was at some point intended to be some kind of comprehensive overview of the con, but it should be immediately obvious that we weren’t able to follow through with such an ambitious goal.

Enjoy the trannies, furrie, LARPers, and some even seedier perversions that plague the geek community attending a standard convention. All things considered, the simple act of Cosplaying really isn’t that weird at all.

To be eligible for the contest to win the Yaoi book mentioned in the above video, please leave your relevant comment to this blog post in the next month.

More He-Man MOTUC details

The other day I posted that He-man and Beastman would be the next two figures in Mattel’s new exclusive Masters Of the Universe Classics (MOUTC) line. I jumped the gun a little because I was pretty sure I had a scoop since hadn’t seen the info anywhere else. It turns out, they were on display at SDCC and a bunch of additional info was revealed and posted to He-man.org. Here’s some of the highlights:
– King Grayskull sold out on both MattyCollector.com and at SDCC
– Availability will be:

  • He-Man – October 31st
  • Beast Man – November 15th
  • Skeletor – December 15th (was not on display at SDCC)
  • Stratos – January 15th (was not on display at SDCC)
  • Merman – February 15th
  • Zodac – Sometime in 2009

– He-Man will have both a normal Power Sword as well as the classic toy half-sword
– From the 12 regular figures released in 2009, two will be characters who never were available as toys ever, and two will be characters who were released in the vintage line but not in the 2002 line
– Figures are limited to 3 per household
– Mattel produced two “Spirit of Grayskull” figures (blue translucent versions of King Grayskull). One was raffled off on Saturday at the con to a lucky fan. The other one will be auctioned in October for Dream Halloween 2008
– No Chase figures are planned right now (THANK GOODNESS!), but they are still a possibility
– Convention exclusives are being planned in 2009 for both NYCC and SDCC
– Some figures will have multiple heads, like Mer-Man
– Bios on the card will be based on the story arcs from the classic toy mini-comics and 200x line
– Mattel is currently looking into the possibility of including mini-comics later in the line
– BAFs (Build a figures) are only a possibility if the toyline is successful
– Mattel is exploring the possibility of a subscription plan for the toys
– Mattel is exploring the possibility of a comic book series available via mattycollectors.com
– No news about the movie; they are still in script developement

I have included some more tidbits from He-Man.org that came up from a Q&A outside of SDCC after the jump.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

So I was going through some of the SDCC 2008 picture galleries from ActionFigureInsider.com and in the Day 3 gallery on page 4, I came across this picture.

Man, she is adorable. I love those boots. But look behind her. The banner over the doors.

A new Underworld movie? Thats news to me. Coming in January 2009? Hell yes! After some some ninja-googling skills were put to work, it appears that its going to be a prequel following Lucian, the lycan, rallying the other lycans to rise up against Viktor and the vampire death dealers. Some details from ComingSoon.net can be seen here.

Games + Learning + Society Conference 4.0 in Madison, WI

This is the latest in Powet Editor Zac Shipley’s series on video game culture in Madison, WI for TheDailyPage.

Games + Learning + Society brings massive multiplayer world to life in Madison
by Zac Shipley

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama mentioned in a speech on Father’s Day that kids need to put down the video game controllers and pick up books. His message was clearly that while a book can be educational, playing a game is not. However, at the Games+Learning+Society Conference this week at Monona Terrace, hundreds of people working at the intersection of gaming and learning have worked to prove not only that games can be educational, but that many already are.

Hulk Vs. Wolverine Trailer

In January 2009, Marvel will be continuing their series of direct to DVD movie releases with ‘The Hulk Vs’. The DVD will contain two short animated stories each featuring a different fight that the Hulk has been famous for. The first will be Hulk vs. Thor. The second will be Hulk vs. Wolverine. The trailer for Hulk vs. Wolverine was just released as you can see below.

From ENewsI.com:

HULK VS THOR – It’s gods versus monsters in this epic 45 minute movie! Never have we explored the explosive power of the Hulk like we have in this new film, every major character from the Marvel Thor universe is thrust into battle with this Green Goliath as he brings a new Ragnarok down upon the realm of gods.

HULK VS WOLVERINE- This dark, violent, smash and slash story was first told in issue 181 of THE INCREDIBLE HULK and the rematches have continued to thrill comic fans ever since. Now Marvel and Lionsgate takes the best of those famous comic book battles and merges them into one heart pounding 33-minute story.

There will be a complete advanced screening of the Hulk vs. Wolverine story at San Diego Comic Con later this month.
