Transformers Masterpiece Thundercracker on the horizon

HobbyLink Japan has posted an image in their listing for forthcoming Masterpiece Skywarp of all three original seekers as Masterpiece figures, including a previously unheard of Masterpiece Thundercracker in the top right corner.

If this comes to fruition, count me in. I definitely want all three original seekers. Bring on the coneheads next!

Marvel Legends Hulk wave rumors

Hasbro Marvel Legends Hulk Wave 1 Red King

Several sites are reporting rumors that there is a high potential for at least two Hulk waves of Marvel Legends figures. It sounds similar to the forthcoming Spider-man 3 and Fantastic Four waves that are actually not part of the main Marvel Legends line, but will be complementary to it. Pictures have surfaced of the purported first wave along with a lineup of the second wave.

Wave 1:

  • King Hulk (from Planet Hulk)
  • Son of Hulk
  • Doc Samson
  • Red King
  • Valkyrie
  • Ed McGuiness Hulk

Wave 2:

  • Wendigo
  • Absorbing Man
  • Bi-Beast
  • Classic She-Hulk
  • Grey Hulk
  • Hulk: The End

Looking at the pictures, the figures look pretty decent with Marvel Legends style articulation. As far as the lineup goes, I would have much preferred to see more of the Hulk’s warbound from Planet Hulk/World War Hulk than multiple versions of the Hulk himself. Also in the rumor mill is a Build A Figure of Fin Fang Foom for one of these waves. Keep in mind though, neither of these waves have ever been confirmed or announced. I know I’ve heard this rumor before though and I’m pretty sure I’ve, at the very least, seen that Doc Samson picture before.

Masters of the Universe comic strip

MOTU comic strip Post Banner

American Comic Strip blog, Stripper’s Guide, has up a post on a Masters of the Universe comic strip that was published for just shy of a year from July 1986 through June 1987. There was apparently both a daily strip and a weekly Sunday strip. Alan Holtz, the Stripper’s Guide blogger, is clearly not much of a He-Man fan, but did some research and found little to no information on this strip from fan sites or the like after some extensive googling. As a casual, He-Man fan, this is the first I have heard of any such strip and would love to see it in its entirety if it can be found.

If you know anything about this strip or have anything to add, post in the comments. We’d love to hear what you know.

Coronation Starscream Bust coming to AFX

Coronation Starscream Bust Post Banner

TFW2005 is reporting that AFX will be offering a Coronation Starscream Bust from Diamond Select Toys in the first quarter of 2008. I have mirrored the image below.

I’m not normally wild about Transformers busts, but this one tempts me a little bit. The DST busts have been stepping it up lately.

Day of the Daleks

Day of the Daleks

Apparently some fans of Dr. Who got together last Sunday in Manchester, England to break a world record; the world’s largest gathering of Daleks.

67 homemade Daleks converged on the Museum of Science and Industry to achieve this feat.

Original Dalek costume designer, Raymond Cusick, was there to help out with judging responsibilites as well.

A flikr gallery was created for the event here.

MythBusters vs Marvel Comics

Tonight, Wednesday August 29th, at 9 PM EDT, Discovery’s Mythbusters will be taking on Marvel Superheroes!

The show’s description reads:

You’re not seeing things. As uncomfortable as it is, it’s true. The Mythbusters are wearing their underpants on the outside. And why? Because this episode is the Superhero Hour — the Marvel comic maestros are put under the MythBusters microscope.

For those living under a rock, Mythbusters is a television program that takes urban myths and determines through experiment whether the myths are true or false. I can only imagine what they’ll do with Marvel.

Cory Doctorow on Downloadable Comics

Cory Doctorow is an authority on copyright law and a huge oppoenent to DRM. Among many many other things, he is also an author and a comic book fan. Newsarama put up a interview with him a while back and I thought it was important to link to it. He has some very intelligent things to say and offers up his own solution. I highly recommend giving this a read. Here are a few juicy excerpts:

I don’t think that downloadable comics substitute for printed comics. I think that downloadable comics entice people to but printed comics. The key calculation you have to make when you talk about digital distribution versus physical distribution is how much it entices and how much it substitutes.

But there’s a much larger audience of people who are, not price sensitive, but are time sensitive, or have other aesthetic or design considerations that come into play when they think about what kind of media they’re going to consume. For example, people who love seeing movies in a big cinema, or people who love holding books, or people who take their comics home in a Mylar bag with a board behind it, and then buy a second copy so they don’t get fingerprints on the first one. For those people, the question becomes does having a free online edition that they can sample, and, more importantly to me, be moved about on the internet in a social way from friend to friend on recommendation – does that create more sales than are lost by allowing a few cheapskates to get their copies for free?

Comic book stores, when they hook you, have a Wednesday audience. There are so many people who will come to a comic book store every Wednesday and, while they’re only in there to buy a three dollar comic, many times they walk out of there holding a twenty dollar graphic novel with a much higher margin than that three dollar comic. That’s an amazing position to be in, and it’s something that almost any other kind of retailer would give anything for. But the problem is the audience for comic book stores is not growing. The growth in the industry seems to be coming from trade editions sold in traditional retail outlets. People who will go into bookstores are still not a huge mainstream audience.

Go here to read the whole article and see Cory’s proposed solution.
