Powet Alphabet: C is for Conan

Conan O’Brien is, as of the time of this writing, still the host of The Tonight Show on NBC. Previously he was the host of Late Night, and a writer for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons.

Conan is currently in dispute as the 11:35pm host on NBC, as network decision makers want to bring back Jay Leno, who moved on from the position in 2009. As a respected comedy writer and performer with legions of fans around the world (especially in the geek community), its worth noting why we love him.

Here are some highlights from outside his talk show career: [Read the rest of this entry…]

Tekken Movie Trailer

I think it goes without saying why this movie will be absolutely terrible. But it will be.

Here, buy a Tekken game, that will make you feel better.

PSA: Powet is with Coco, donate to Haitian relief

conan03Two of the biggest news stories this week are the disaster in Haiti and the dethroning of Conan O’Brien as host of The Tonight Show. Naturally, my fellow geeks, we’re all rooting for Conan, but its hard to ignore that an impoverished nation has been hit by a terrible earthquake from which it may never fully recover.

An enterprising lad named Mike Mitchell has combined these two efforts spectacularly. You can buy his “I’m With Coco” artwork as a print or a t-shirt and a portion will be handed off to relief in Haiti.

It is our sincere hope that those in Haiti who have survived are cared for in the best manner and can begin to rebuild, and that Conan O’Brien continue as host of Tonight or move swiftly to another network that appreciates him as much as we do.

Transformers War For Cybertron Reveal Trailer

This video has a lot of the same footage from the Transformers War For Cybertron Teaser Video, but includes voiceover from Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. Its not Frank Welker as Megatron though, unclear if he’s still yet to be cast or if they’re going with another actor.
You’ll identify a lot more characters, including Bumblebee and Trypticon.

In related news, is Hasbro prepping a full line of War For Cybertron Toys? They’ve definitely made a deluxe Prime! Still no announcement where the series will go in 2010, this might be “filler” material until the next cartoon or movie is released.

The A-Team Trailer

Joe Carnahan’s big screen remake of The A-Team looks amazing. You might have some doubts as you watch the standard action movie fare with a slowed version of the original theme, but the last 20 seconds of the trailer sell the entire flick. I don’t even want to spoil it. I’ll just say that any sequel to last summer’s GIJOE movie will have to stretch far to beat such an outlandish action sequence.
Liam Neeson leads the cast as Hannibal Smith, with Bradley Cooper (ALIAS, The Hangover) as Face, Rampage Jackson (UFC Fighter) as BA Baracus, and overnight sensation Sharlto Copley (District 9) as Howlin’ Mad Murdock.

The LOST Supper: How Important is John Locke?

ABC has released a promotional photo of the cast of LOST mimicking the Da Vinci painting “The Last Supper,” take a look. (click to enlarge)

It could just be a promotional image for the last season of LOST, but I can’t help reading more into it. Kate is seated in place of Judas Iscariot. Will she be the one to betray John Locke? Also, each cast member is in place of one of the 12 Apostles with the exception of Michael Emerson’s Ben Linus who does not correspond to anyone in the original painting.

Also consider the first promotional poster, in which all the cast members are looking forward with the exception of Terry O’Quinn as John Locke, who has his back turned. Compare that to the above, where Locke is the only one looking directly at the camera. Clearly we’ve known for some time he’s a huge part of the show as not only a fan favorite but now deeply rooted in the island mythology since the reveal last season. Will this finally be the year the producers stop pretending Jack Shepard is the star?

While I’m on the subject, enjoy some season 6 promos. No new footage, except a commercial for Mr Clucks, but a nice recap.

Powetcast: Revenge Of Teen Wolf

Regular host Sean Orange is absent so Zac Shipley rocks the mic with aDam and Zero in tow. You’d think this would yield a shorter show, but we’ve still got almost 2 hours of news, obscure references, and jokes about serious illnesses and genitals.

Join us, for an unexpected, unplaned, and unrehearsed podcast! Regular shows will resume in 2 weeks!

Hawkman the next DC movie?

You like the look of this fella with the wings, the funny mask and the mace? How do you feel about a whole movie about him?

It appears Hawkman is being considered as a next step for WB to get some serious comic movie cash before the gravy train runs out and people start wanting Westerns or something. Could be cool move, as there isn’t a lot of guys like him on screen now, and his abilities could make for some good visual effects sequences.

This is a real wild card though, since Hawkman has such a diverse history, they’re is no telling if he’ll be a reincarnated Egyptian or a cop from the planet Thanagar. Also will the wings be real or fake? Odds are if he makes it into a movie he’ll have to put on a shirt.

Hawkman will appear in live action form in Smallville next month, played by Michael Shanks. DC could be testing the waters, but then I think the people still watching Smallville at this point are a poor sample for future success.

Warner Bros has had a lot of false starts in recent years, and it seems they’re thinking outside the bat. Green Lantern is already a sure thing with shooting expected next year for a 2011 release. What could come after this for DC? Taylor Swift Supergirl?

Who should play Hawkman in the movie? Leave a comment!
