When we first started this podcast, we thought the DLC Apocalypse would be a generation or two off, but if Microsoft has its way (and Sony decides to follow suit next week at E3), it’ll be a lot sooner than anyone wanted. Any gamers, anyway. Microsoft seems pretty happy to keep us in the dark (or they did until the day before this podcast was posted). With disc DRM and a persistent internet connection prevalent on everyone’s minds — even leading to Adam Orth leaving the company — you’d think Microsoft’s messaging would be more on-target. Now they won’t even answer press questions before or after their E3 events. What’s going on? In what world does this make sense? Vinnk is back to discuss with Sean the the consequences of having an unclear PR strategy, holding things too closely to the figurative chest, hanging gamers out to try. We also decide to let loose with a few Famicom Dojo announcements of our own, including a Kickstarter for a Season 2 Blu-ray and DVD, a new YouTube channel, and plans for the video series this year in the 30th Anniversary of the Famicom. Plus, the actual pronunciation of “Tengen”!

I made a bet with a friend last night over the subject of will physical games die out. He bet me $1000 that you will not be able to buy a physical game in 10 years. I highly doubt that but if i was too lose the bet i wouldn’t be so mad. I would just give him the money that i didn’t spend on those new download only systems. unless every where around the world has broadband connection there will always be physical media. Console makers would be insane to lose such a relatively large chunk of the market.

True, but BARELY. The newest BNL album ads clearly demark that you can get a disc at Best Buy, Target, and Walmart because it literally isn’t carried anywhere else.

that’s because dedicated record stores are no more. hell, dedicated video stores look like it going that way. But they are still are being sold in department stores because there are still people who like to have physical copies or just don’t know how to get the them online. record companies still see CD sales as profitable even tho’ it has decline in the last decade and i believe physical games will still be profitable even if there is broadband connection in every home and everyone, even grandpa, knows how to download a game. well, at least in the next 10 years lol.

All of this next-gen console talk has me thinking of that line by Abe Simpson on the Homerpalooza episode, where he says to a teenage Homer:

If you’re doing the kickstarter, I’m all for it! As an owner of a DVD player, however, will you have a DVD version, or just a Blu-Ray?

The set would include both DVD and Blu-ray copies, hence would be about 3-4 times more costly to produce, and double-hence the Kickstarter.

Please don’t give them any ideas guys, I’m sure Microsoft has been watching how games sell on mobile platforms but we don’t want them to copy that business model. Coming out with a new console every 1 to 2 years and buying into a ‘contract’ or ‘subscription’ to get a discount would ruin consoles. But that may be too late considering that they already did that with the Xbox 360 and hinted at it with the Xbox One.

Anyways i have a question for you Sean. I just recently purchased a Wii U and I was wondering if Skyward Sword really looks as terrible as everyone says it does on Wii U. I haven’t played it yet and I no longer have a Wii since it was stolen in the mail.

I haven’t tried it on my Wii U yet, but I can’t imagine why it would look terrible at all. I can give it a go and let you know.

I can tell you this: I played it from start to finish on my refurbished Wii. It’s one of the most gorgeous games I’ve ever seen, and it’s only in 480p.

Yeah it was one of those nice looking red ones too, but on a happier note I called Nintendo customer service and surprisingly I was able to get all my Virtual Console games downloaded to my Wii U.

Anyways I’d heard that Skyward Sword looked washed out on it but since I haven’t played it on the Wii, it’s not like I could tell the difference.
