What companies or individuals make games that you will buy just because their name is on it? Vinnk and Sean examine the perils and the pitfalls of Developer Worship, and wonder aloud if there’s really anything our favorite personalites and companies can do to make us hate them. We list some of our favorites: Harmonix, Square and Enix (before they were one company), BioWare, Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima, Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda 51 and more! Before I even listen to this episode, I’ll say Irrational, Bungie, Valve, Naughty Dog, and Popcap. I’ll buy any game they make from here on without question.

Dang, we didn’t mention ANY of those developers!

For me, I’ve bought new (nearly) every game Bungie has released since Halo 2 came out — and later went back and got Halo: Combat Evolved. I didn’t set out for that to be the case, but they haven’t let me down yet.

Valve? I’m really only a fan of Portal in specific, and their Steam platform in general. Their leaked employee manual lays out the vision for the kind of company I’d like to run.

As for the other companies, I either like their games very much, or — even though I know the others have put out critically-acclaimed ones — I just haven’t played them yet. Uncharted 3 looked amazing. (Still waiting for the kart racer!) I’ve only played the BioShock demo. If I thought the 50s nouveau stuff in Portal 2 was great, how much greater is it in BioShock 2?

Treasure is probably the only developer I go out of my way to buy every titles (which reason, I never owned Radiant Silvergun until it came to XBLA). WayForward is a close second, though I don’t have any of their licensed titles even though some of them are supposed to be pretty good.

I forgot SNK. There was a time when I would buy anything remotely connected to the Neo-Geo games I loved.

Anything credited to Suda 51, Treasure, and/or Shu Takumi will have my interest. No More Heroes being my primary introduction to Suda 51, Astro Boy being my primary gateway to treasure, and Phoenix Wright being my intro to Shu Takumi.
That being said, I need to play more Bioware games.
