Day 1 E3 wrapup: Wednesday May 10th

The first real day of E3 come to a close with less E3 news than the days that weren’t technically part of E3. Weird.

Here’s are some of the fun things discovered today:

A new Duck Hunt?!

A sequel I honestly never thought I’d see is playable at E3. The Wii will have a new gun peripheral and what is surely gaming history’s most played gun game appears to be having another go at it. Is this going to be a full on Wii game or is this just a demo so that they can showcase the gun at E3? I’m not going to speculate an answer to that! IGN gives us an impression of the game as well as a look at the new “light gun” shell for the Wii controller. It’s unknown how exactly the “light gun” will work or even whether or not it will use light (if it does not it will probably not be refered to as a light gun much longer…”. Since the original Nintendo Zapper is incompatible on some modern televisions (such as my LCD projection TV) this may finally give us unfortunate souls who tragically only have access to high end televisions the oppurtunity to shoot some ducks again.

100% Authentic Super Smash Bros. Brawl Screenshot New Super Smash Bros.�Brawl characters announced

New characters for the Wii Super Smash Bros. game have been reported by Kotaku. New characters include Solid Snake, Nintendogs, Metaknight, Pit, Zero Suit Samus and Wario. I don’t even know who two of those are! I certainly hope players can move their Wii-mote in a belly rubbing motion to incapacitate their Nintendog opponents… though apparently we will be using the classic GameCube controllers on this one.

Earthworm Jim Returns!

From the soil did crawl an interesting announcement from Atari today. We’ll be seeing another Earthworm Jim game, this time on the PSP. Check out IGN for more on this.

An innovative X-Box game?

A game more attypical for it’s system than Kameo will be released on the X-Box! You guess it! It’s a… piniata game… WHAT? Yeah so I guess you just whack a piniata with a bat, right? No. It’s a piniata farm simulation game. Wasn’t that a skit on the short lived John Leguizamo vehicle “House of Buggin“? Well I’m pretty sure it was but still this game is coming. Smash Bros. thoughts:
Old-school Varia Suit. I like it. Does it mean anything?
Twilight Princess Link with Master Sword and Hero Shield. Almost certainly means something, and that something is a spoiler.
The IGN gallery on the game contains a recently uploaded image of Ocarina-style Link that might simply be an image from Melee, but might be an alternate costume from Brawl.
Meta-Knight? Come on, Hal, I know you’re the Kirby people and everything, but nobody wanted Meta-Knight.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say Sonic’s finally in. That’s just my prediction, but I’m right.

Light gun? Naw, there’s no reason it won’t behave like a regular wiimote, so you won’t have to worry about compatability issues — that was the whole point of the new control style, was to make it display-independent.

I assume one of the characters you “don’t know” is Pit, who is from Kid Icarus. Had a little nerdgasm there, myself…

Link have the shield and sword doesn’t nessecarily mean anything. What they could be doing is showing off Link in his best graphical presentation, weilding his most iconic items.

Oh, and the Nintendogs are an item that covers up the screen. Probably works better online. Oh, and the remote won’t have any special features for this game.

Pit and Metaknight were the two. Never did get a chance to play through Kid Icarus.

I assume it’s not light just because looking at it the front of the gun is the Wiimote and I’m sure there’s no light sensor on the standard Wiimote. The shell is mostly added at the handle area and it sort of looks like it’s just there so that you can actually grip the thing like a gun, rather than adding some crazy new hardward.

That being said I’m not too worried about how the gun works. I’m sure it will. I researched why the Zapper didn’t work on my LCD projection TV and while it was difficult getting an answer (or at least finding multiple sources which agreed on the reason for the problem rather than speculating) it seemed that newer light guns, such as the Super Scope, didn’t suffer from the same problems as the NES Zapper because of the way the guns worked. So unless they essentially reused the NES Zapper’s hardware and made games work where you can see a white square around the duck when you shoot I don’t imagine we’ll be having any problems.

Metaknight is an enemy of Kirby in the video games (One of the games in Kirby superstar pits you against him) while Pit is the main character from Kid Icarus.

Ernie’s an idiot at this point to think LOZ:TTP might not feature the Master Sword. Straight-up moron.

There is in fact an optical sensor on the top of the Wii controller. One of the reasons the Wii-mote will work well is because it gathers player data via optics and motion simultaneously. I’m a little concerned that I don’t see a sight on the gun grip rig.

Ah. Well then assuming this thing would work with my TV at all the gun will work then.

My parody image of the Nintendogs may be more accurate than I thought. I read on a blog on nintendo.com that Nintendogs are involved, but not characters. Some guy at work said that they cover the screen and you have to scratch them to make them leave. Here I thought I was being stupid.

Nintendogs in Smash Brothers = Chaos in Sonic Adventure. Of course, if you could shoot them in there, it’d be a plus. Like shooting the dog from Duck Hunt would have owned.

Just wait, the Dog(s) in Duck Hunt 2 WILL be the Nintendogs. Mark my words.

Just to reiterate — the wiimote will work with ALL TVs. It’s the entire point. I think the lack of sight is fine — there will probably be a cursor on the screen, much like in the demo.
