Dave Cockrum passes away at 63

Dave Cockrum, probably best known for his stint on Uncanny X-Men, passed away last week.

While he has not worked on comics in recent years, his work is well known throughout the industry.

I first saw the news posted here. For more information go to that link.

Hasbro’s Marvel Legends in package

planethulk.jpgToys News International is showing off some of the first wave of Marvel Legends under the direction of Hasbro. While a few fans have expressed distaste for the future of this line, I’m going on record as saying Planet Hulk looks cool.

See the gallery of Emma Frost, Ultimate Iron Man, Banshee, Planet Hulk and Hercules here: Hasbro Marvel Legends Series 1

One thing I think all can agree on, the new bubble packaging looks really nice. Its a big departure from the rather rectangular boxes Legends has has for years now, but its a lot more vivid and eye catching. Now it appears we’re losing the pack-in comic book, but we’re gaining a much better logo.

Ultimately we’re going to have to get these in hand before we can really tell whether Hasbro has improved or doomed this line. Either way, distribution is about to get a lot better and we’ll have to chase a lot less variants.

Thanks Josh!

X3 DVDebacle

Wolverine and Magneto review the disastrous DVD release for the latest in the X-Men movie series by talking about some discs accidentally containing extra scenes, Fox’s double dipping plans and the already released European DVD with all the features we should have gotten in the first place.

Listed below are the special features we’re missing:
– 11 additional deleted scenes
– ‘X-Men: Evolution Of A Trilogy’ featurette
– ‘X-Men: The Excitement Continues’ featurette
– ‘X-Men Up Close’ interactive gallery
– ‘Anatomy Of A Scene: The Golden Gate Bridge’ featurette
– Pre-viz animatic gallery
– Brett Ratner’s production diary
– Character gallery
– Concept art gallery
– Models galleries
– Storyboards
– Vignettes
– Blogs
– Easter egg

Thanks to forum member spooie and powet.tv enemy Dave for educating me on some of these problems and for the sexy Janine for running into a wall for me.

Rise and Fall of the Shi’ar Empire

UNCX479_COVER.jpgCaptain America scribe Ed Brubaker joins artist Billy Tan on Uncanny X-men for the 12-part series, “Rise and Fall of the Shi’ar Empire“. Basically, Vulcan (the other Summers brother) resurfaced, left Earth, and is hell-bent on seeking revenge on the Shi’ar for killing his mother and making him a slave. Of course, the X-men must stop him.

I was not familiar with Billy Tan before this arc, but I must say I quickly became a fan. He and inker Danny Miki have put together a book that is crisp and vibrant. His characters convey real emotion and his action scenes are fluid. For anyone unfamiliar with Ed Brubaker (and shame on you), he’s the current writer of Captain America and Daredevil and recently finished a six-issue mini, Books of Doom. He is currently one of the best writers in the field and Shi’ar is no exception. He’s put together a great and dynamix X-team: Professor Xavier, Marvel Girl, Havoc, Polaris, Nightcrawler, Warpath, and a mutant I was unaware of, Darwin. The team dynamic is excellent and has many moments of pure, unadulterated baddassitude. With most of the Marvel universe preoccupied with the evnts of Civil War, it’s nice to have a story that is seperate from that. This series gets my highest recommendation.

Parts 1-4 (of 12) already in stores.
