$20 Game of the Week: Fight Night Round 4 (Xbox 360, PS3)

fnround4Last console generation, Fight Night and its sequel set new standards for Boxing video games. When the series debuted on Xbox 360 back in 2006 (and on PS3 later that year), the bar was set even further. However, the series was in jeopardy after series creator Kudo Tsunoda was booted from EA after the dismal performance of 2007’s Def Jam Icon (a move which makes about as much sense as the Browns having QB Josh Cribbs play Linebacker then shelving him after one game because he isn’t making as many sacks and tackles as he did passes and completions). Thankfully FN Round 4 manages to retain the high standard of boxing that the series is known for, even if EA Canada made a few unwelcome changes.

Green Ranger beats MMA fighter as if he was a Putty

The Green Power Ranger
A few years ago Powet.tv reported on Jason David Frank bailing on an MMA match but yesterday he finally made his Mixed Martial Arts debut and currently stands undefeated. Also known as Tommy Oliver, the Green Power Ranger, the White Power Ranger and some other things in latter lesser incarnations of the show, this once superhero didn’t even need to morph in order to take care of opponent Jonathan Mack leading fans to believe the competitor was on par with your run of the mill Putty Patroller.

This Putty put up about as good a fight

$20 Game of the Week: NCAA College Hoops 2K8 (PS3, PS2, Xbox 360)

ch2k8I have always loved college and high school level athletics. In the place of money hungry celebrities whose egos and off-court/field antics seemingly overshadow their athletic abilities (Vick, Rodman, Owens, and about dozens of others, I’m looking firmly at you), you get young and hungry talent willing to do anything to get noticed and make it towards that next level, be it a college scholarship, or an NFL contract. This be-the-best-that-you-can mentality creates an atmosphere where anything can happen. Also, there is a certain charm in seeing local high school and college stars compete that you can’t get watching multi-million dollar celebrities, and who doesn’t enjoy watching the marching band, especially in black college football games? So it’s no surprise that I’ve always enjoyed 2K Games’ College Hoops better than its NBA counterpart. For years, developer Visual Concepts has managed to create a game that captures the atmosphere of college basketball while delivering solid gameplay on the court. That is why I was sad to learn that 2K Sports would not be renewing it’s NCAA basketball license for subsequent years, thereby putting an end to this series. To that end, 2K8 is an excellent swan song for the series. The improvements that it makes are little compared to 2K7, but they serve to refine the gameplay further.

Lost Classics: NFL Blitz (Arcade, PS1, N64)

nfl-blitzLike football? Hate how overcomplicated it can be? Then Midway has the game for you: NFL Blitz. Blitz did for football what their previous ‘extreme sports’ series, NBA Jam did for basketball: strip out all of the grunt work and concentrate on the big hits, big passes, and over-the-top action fans love about the game. No stats to fudge through, no back-office politics to worry about, no contract negotiations to wade through, you just pick your team, hit the field, and play through 4 quarters of smash-mouth football, just the way God intended.

Big Game: The Movie Trailers

An annual tradition in the United States is being held tonight. You see, all the big marketing geniuses make commercials for their new products, and in between those commercials there is an American football game.
Movie studios are now pulling out the big guns, and a lot of their teasers are already online.

UPDATE: Many of these ads have been pulled from youtube, but you can see them all on Hulu.com/superbowl as they air in the game, or using the viewer below!

Apologies to international readers, Hulu only works in the States. Transformersmovie.com has TF2, and Coming soon has GI JOE.

MLG’s Top 10 Halo 3 Moments

I had no idea MLG clips were running on ESPN. I also had no idea ESPN had a videogame show either called “Game Up”
But they do.
And you can watch it on their site.
Anyway the highlight reel above is pretty much exactly the kind of top ten you’d see on ESPN, but to Halo players you’ll see some extraordinarly awesome sniper moves and triple kills.
