Lost Classics: Grandia II (Dreamcast, PC, PS2)

grandiaiiThroughout its limited lifespan, the Dreamcast didn’t have too many RPGs that made it over to American shores. However, the few it did have were classics. Grandia II was definitely one of them, and even after the premature death of Sega’s system it lived on through PC and Playstation 2 ports (although those two were a bit rough around the edges with the PC version containing several bugs and glitches). While it’s your standard Japanese RPG for the most part, Grandia II’s story, gameplay, and monsters help set this game apart from its peers. While it’s no Final Fantasy 7, genre fans will want to add this game to their collection.

Lost Classics: Contra – Hard Corps (Genesis)

contrahardcorpsFor as long as anyone can remember, Konami was one of many companies who made video games exclusively for Nintendo systems thanks to the Big N’s heavy license restrictions. Thus, it came as a surprise when Konami finally began to develop games for other console manufacturers’ systems, most notably the Sega Genesis. Sega’s 16-bit had already seen Rocket Knight, along with console-exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Castlevania games, so players hoped that it would be a matter of time until Konami graced the system with its flagship run-and-gun series, Contra. Sure enough, Konami delivered. Contra Hard Corps would be the first and last Contra game on the Sega Genesis. Although it wasn’t as memorable as Contra 3, it was good enough to stand among the past entries of the series. In fact, it would be the last good Contra game before the series slipped into a period of mediocrity.

$20 Game of the Week: Bleach – Dark Souls (Nintendo DS)

bleachThis is the follow up to Sega/Treasure’s Bleach: The Blade of Fate which was released in the U.S. in 2007. Based on the popular anime of the same name, Bleach: Dark Souls provides more fighting action featuring your favorite characters from the series. One would look at this and call it Bleach: The Blade of Fate Championship edition, and they wouldn’t be completely wrong, as Dark Souls borrows a lot of its content from Blade of Fate. However, there is a huge amount of new content in the game, and some gameplay refinements have been made, making this game stand out from its predecessor.

$20 Game of the Week: Condemned 2 – Bloodshot (Xbox 360, PS3)

Weather they have you hunting down the city’s most dangerous serial killers or being stalked through hallways by a demonic little girl, Monolith knows how to pile on the scares just as good as any Silent Hill or Resident Evil title.. Bloodshot is the sequel to one of the Xbox 360’s earliest games, and it improves greatly upon its predecessor in almost every way. You once again step into the shoes of investigator Ethan Thomas. However, due to the events of the last game, you’re a mere shell of your former shelf. Having left the SCU, you drown your sorrows in the bottle until your former employers notify you of a mysterious call from Ethan Van Horn, a friend of yours who has gone missing. Soon, you once again get pulled back into a world of evil and mayhem, as it seems that Serial Killer X, who met his end at the end of the first game, has seemingly returned and has gone back to his old ways. Along the way, you’ll come to terms with your personal demons, your origin, learn the true nature of the mania that has gripped the streets, and get up close and personal to the cult that has hinted at in the last game.

$20 Game of the Week: Virtua Tennis 3 (Xbox 360, PS3)

Virtua Tennis did for videogame tennis what NFL Blitz and NBA Jam did for football and basketball respectively. No, there aren’t any big head codes, you won’t be hitting the court with Bill Clinton and Will Smith, there is no loudmouth announcer, and players don’t burst into flame. What I mean is that Sega and AM3 has taken the sport of tennis and made it fun to play. At first it wouldn’t seem to be much of a big deal, as tennis is rather easy to implement in video game form. In fact, the very first video game was basically a version of table tennis. However, there is a lot of strategy involved in the sport. Speaking as a former high school tennis player, it’s important to position yourself correctly, use the proper shot for returns, and figure out how to prepare and set up the next volley. There is a lot of thinking involved, and little time to do it in. Thankfully, Sega Sports’ tennis series has always eschewed any of these complications and focused upon the bare essence of what tennis is: two (of four if playing doubles) people knocking a ball back and forth between each other and moving as fast as possible while doing so.
