Comic Book Movie News Round-up

SuperHeroHype brings us lots of updates on comic-based movies coming out.

  • Ron Perlman and Kelly Hu are joining Samuel L. Jackson on the Afro Samurai project for Spike TV.
    • The five-part animated series is produced by Japanese studio Gonzo in association/partnership with GHK K.K. and FUNimation and premieres on SPIKE Thursday, January 4, 2007

  • I just noticed that IMDB is listing Kelly Hu as Yuriko Oyama in the Wolverine movie, listed as ‘in pre-production’. So expect to see a rematch of Wolverine vs. Lady Deathstrike, or at least some interesting flashbacks.
  • A Superman sequel looks like a go with Bryan Singer on board to produce and direct.
  • Superman Returns hits 200 million domestically, clearing an obstacle for a sequel which already looks to be given the go ahead now.
  • Fourth Spiderman 3 villain revealed to be Bruce Campbell?
  • Marvel’s Moon Knight property is heading for a TV series!

[UPDATE – CRAZY: Just noticed that IMDB is listing Kelly Hu as ‘rumored’ for Wolverine and not yet confirmed.]

Buy Action Comics #844, Or You’ll Regret It!

Action Comics #844Action Comics #844
I rarely buy Superman comics. So when the new issue of Action Comics hit the stands today, I completely forgot why it was THE book to buy this month. It took someone in the shop to remind me, and as soon as he did, I was ashamed at having forgotten. See, this arc of Action Comics is being co-written by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner. That’s Richard Donner, as in, director of the first Superman movie. The one who was recently granted the opportunity to re-cut Superman II with old, lost footage he shot way back when, just before he got unceremoniously kicked to the curb. This alone is reason enough to make a person sit up and take notice.

But then I bought it.

Lost classics special: Good Batman games (NES, Genesis, SNES)

batmanlogo.jpgEven though Batman is one of the most prolific names in movies, comics, and TV, his history in video games has been somewhat less than encouraging as of late, as evidenced by the recent Batman Begins game. However, things weren’t always like this. Lets head back to a time when Batman games were *gasp* good.

Justice League Heroes Trailer & Images

Justice League HeroesJustice League Heroes (the X-Men Legends-like game for DC characters) finally has a trailer letting us see some of the characters in action – specifically Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, Zatanna, and Martian Manhunter. It’s not going to change the face of gaming or anything, but it certainly looks to deliver the exact type of gameplay I’m expecting.

Also, there’s some stills of the game available for your perusal here. Plus, they talk about the game a little, but I have no stomach for this “reading” business. Just the pretty pictures.

Comics Interview Roundup

Interviews:

  • Superman - BusiekKurt Busiek talks about his current run on Superman, which is an excellent, excellent read. I typically find Superman dull and uninteresting, but Busiek’s doing a bang-up job on the series, and with only 3 issues out so far, there’s plenty of time for you to get on board. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (I mean the book. Interview’s good too.)
  • Brian K. Vaughan talks about the Dr. Strange mini that starts tomorrow, which sounds strangely interesting. This man can virtually do no wrong when he puts his pen to paper, so to speak, so I have no intention to miss this one.
  • Foolkiller - PencilsGregg Hurwitz will be writing Marvel’s upcoming Foolkiller book for their MAX line, which I guess we can all preview in tomorrow’s MAX preview book. The interesting part of the article is in the middle, where he says, “I was doing a book signing in Florida with Brad Meltzer and I mentioned to him that I had always loved the Punisher. He put me in touch with Marvel Executive Editor Axel Alonso and things clicked, which led to Foolkiller.” Looks like Brad Meltzer might be opening a lot of doors for authors to break into comics.
  • NightwingMarv Wolfman is writing Nightwing, starting TOMORROW. It was going to be a 4 issue stint, but now he’s on for a longer haul, thank goodness. There’s preview pages too! Go look!
  • Everyone’s talking about Ed Brubaker‘s book Criminal, which hits tomorrow. In fact, we’ll be talking about it in a second

Superman Returns Video Game Clip

Superman Returns Video GameNow available on YouTube, HERE is some footage from the Superman Returns video game.  There are scenes of battle with giant enemies, fights with multiple hand-to-hand opponents, racing around using super-speed, and the obligatory rescue missions – specifically one where he’s using his super-breath on a … tornado.  Weird.

What really caught my attention though is the segment, about two-thirds of the way through, clearly demonstrating the player in control of Bizarro, using his heat vision on the city.  Based on the appearance of things, it looks like we’ll finally have a Superman video game that isn’t absolute hell to play through, at the very least.  And a best case scenario might have game this topping the movie in terms of enjoyment.  Hate to say it, but it already easily does so in terms of action, in this footage alone.

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Box Art

Superman II: The Richard Donner CutYou might have missed it, but Superman II is being re-released, re-cut using footage shot by original director Richard Donner before he got the boot from the project. While there’s a lot more to the story than that, you can read up on that on your own time. The story behind the movie is actually quite interesting, but for the purposes of brevity – and of not re-treading old ground – there’s the front box art image on the left. And while the front image is readily available in a number of places, ComicsContinuum.com has large image of the back of the box, available HERE.

You can see the listed features on the right side:

  • Introduction by Director Richard Donner
  • Commentary by Director Richard Donner and Creative Consultant Tom Mankiewicz
  • New Featurette Superman II: Restoring the Vision
  • Deleted scenes

As you can see in the small print on the bottom, Richard Donner is listed as director, and the running time will be 116 minutes, rather than the 128 minutes of the original. Since I’m not overly familiar with the original release, I don’t know what that means for us, but if nothing else, when this DVD hits, I’ve got myself an excuse to watch Superman II, which is always nice.
