Hathaway and Hardy are Catwoman and Bane for The Dark Knight Rises

We’ve known for a while that Tom Hardy would be in the next Batman flick, but we didn’t know who he would be. Speculation fuleed by plot rumors put him as Dr Hugo Strange, but an official press release from Warner Bros has eliminated rumors and confirmed another cast member.

Tom Hardy will be Bane, a Batman villain notorious for breaking the caped crusader’s back during the Knightfall plot in the mid-90s. Bane’s power is derived from a super potent steroid-like substance called Venom that amplifies his musculature.

Additionally, Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle, better known as Catwoman. A very popular character for decades in the Batman mythos as both a villain and a hero, its unknown what role she will play in Nolan universe. One thing is for sure: it will likely be better than Halle Berry’s attempt.

Powet Alphabet: B is for Bat-Girl

Batgirl has been a staple of the Batman mythos for decades, much like Much like Robin, the boy/girl wonder — though for not quite as long. The one near-constant of this title is that the girl in question usually ends up as the current Robin’s girlfriend. That might not be so bad, except the role sentences the unsuspecting Batgirl a slew of terrible fates (in no particular order): being shot, paralyzed, raped, tortured to (apparent) death, and even wiped out of existence. Mostly.

Regardless, I’m sure fans everywhere remember when the very first Bat-Girl, Betty Kane, burst onto the scene with her red, green, and gold outfit.

…bwuh??

Read on to see more about Batwoman’s sidekick, and her not-quite-as-long-as-Robin line of unhyphenated successors.

Powet Alphabet: R is for Robin, the Boy/Girl Wonder

It’s not a great thing to be Batman’s protege. You get shot at, blown up, killed, and — like Menudo, the Boy Scouts, or the Disney Channel — you get kicked out once you get too old. Robin is little more than a brightly colored sprite for criminals to shoot at instead of Batman, much like how a magician would use a sexy assistant to distract the audience. Except this sexy assistant is (usually) a nubile young boy, and stands a much better chance of actually getting sawed in half.

Robin has been part of the Batman mythos for 70 years. Even in real time, that means Batman must have gone through a slew of supple young teens by now. But in comic time? Hoo boy.

So just how many goddamn Robins are there anyway? (And why isn’t Batman clever enough to think of another alias for his underage sidekicks?)

Nolan Revealed 3rd Batman Title & More!

The L.A. Times “Hero Complex” column recently had an interview with Christopher Nolan, who had a bit to say about the 3rd upcoming Batman movie in his famed series.

He goes on to reveal the new movie’s title will be “The Dark Knight Rises“, and not “Shadow of the Bat” like a few rumor mills were banking on. He also would not reveal the villains of the film, but did knock a few off the list – namely the Riddler and Mr. Freeze. The Riddler was the fan-favorite for possible Nolanverse villain in the 3rd movie, given the gritty realism that Nolan has been staunch to stick to. The Mr. Freeze angle, while could work within Nolan’s means if done a different way than we’re used to, was stricken from the list just to save us the trouble of guessing who could be a villain if not Edward Nygma.

Tom Hardy Joins Cast Of Batman 3

UPDATE: Read HERE for newer information about Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises

Tom Hardy, known for his portrait of infamous British convict Charles Bronson, has agreed to take a role in the next Batman film.

Deadline reports that Hardy will reteam with director Christopher Nolan after the highly successful Inception. The role itself is being kept secret, its unknown if he’ll play a villain or hero but it will be a lead role. Begin speculation!

This news comes just days after Rhys Ifans was cast in Spider-Man, again in an secret role. At least the Spider-Man folks had the decency to tell us what side of the law Ifans will be on. Though I suppose considering Nolan’s Batman franchise, the good and bad guys are never quite so starkly portrayed.

Hardy also becomes the first person of note cast in the movie, though Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Cane, and Morgan Freeman are all expected to reprise their roles.
