$20 Game of the Week: Injustice – The Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition (PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360)

Note: The PS4 version of this title is free for the rest of January 2015 for PS+ members.

Injustice-Ultimate-Edition

Created by NetherRealm studios (the same people behind 2011’s blockbuster Mortal Kombat reboot), Injustice is the first good DC comics game that doesn’t have Batman in the title, nor involves legos. Injustice’s plot, gameplay, features, and character selection makes it the perfect game for both DC comics fans and fighting game aficionados alike. The Ultimate Edition sweetens the pot by adding all the dlc that was previously released from the game. That means you get all the extra costumes, extra characters, and Star Labs missions that were previously released.

$20 Game of the Week: The Cat Lady (PC)

thecatlady

When you think of the term “Cat Lady” you usually think of a crazy elderly woman with a bunch of cats everywhere who will soon be the subject of the television show Hoarders. However the title of this $20GOTW refers to Susan Ashworth, a 40-year old woman who lives alone in a flat in England. Her only friends are the cats who arrive when she plays her piano. Susan is depressed to the point where she decides to take her own life. However, it doesn’t exactly go as planned. Susan winds up in a strange place where she meets the Queen of Maggots. Susan is then tasked to find and kill 5 serial killers, known as ‘Parasites’, returned to the land of the living, and is made immortal. $20 Game of the Week: Hate Plus (PC)

hateplusHate Plus is the sequel to 2012’s Analog: A Hate Story. In that visual novel, players learned the terrible truth of the derelict space ship, the Mugunghwa, and what happened to its inhabitants. All that remained of the ship and its culture were it’s two A.Is, and it was up to players to piece together the events that led to the disaster that claimed the lives of its passengers. However, upon reading the log files, it was clear that the culture and society on the ship had regressed to feudal levels and traditions, where ruling families held all the power and women were treated as second class citizens. Hate Plus, beginning only a few moments after Analog ends, tells the story of the events leading up to ‘year zero’, the point when society regressed to the form seen in Analog. It’s an even more heartbreaking and gripping tale than Analog, and it will suck you right in provided you are prepared to do a lot of reading.

$20 Game of the Week: Bioshock Infinite (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)

Bioshock-Infinite-logo

Bioshock is the third (and likely final) entry in 2K/Irrational’s genre-bending FPS series. Infinite leaves the sunken dystopia of Rapture behind for the beautiful sky-island of Columbia. Players take control of former Pinkerton agent turned Private investigator Booker Dewitt as he infiltrates the island in search of a young woman with mysterious abilities. Of course the mission is anything but easy, as the island’s inhabitants and ruler Comstock exhibit the worst of early 20th century racism, sexism, and xenophobia. That’s not even mentioning the civil war taking place on the island and the nightmarish human/robotic amalgamations you’ll be doing battle with.

$20 Game of the Week: Guardians of the Galaxy – The Universal Weapon (iOS, Android)/X-men: Days of Future Past (iOS, Kindle)

gotg

Well, everyone’s favorite gun-toting raccoon and living tree are among Marvel’s newest (and most obscure) movie stars as of this weekend in Guardians of the Galaxy, and earlier this summer, everyone’s favorite mutants returned to the silver screen in X-men Days of Future Past, and what good would any movie be without the prerequisite tie-in games? Of course unlike recent movie tie in games, such as the Gameloft-Cashgrab mobile games based on Captain America 2 and Spider-Man 2, these games have no in-app purchases (it’s a rather biting commentary on mobile gaming when we’re praising games for NOT having any IAP, but I digress). The games themselves aren’t bad either.
