I’m part of the crowd that wished Justice League Unlimited was still on the air. Its only been, what, 5 years? Since we left the Bruce Timm universe, Cartoon Network has moved on to The Batman and now Brave & The Bold as the outpost of DC animation.

Certainly one of CN’s most successful (though strangely underrated) series was Teen Titans. I recall when the show premiered a few people around the comic shop suggested a better angle would’ve been Young Justice. Now it looks like they got the hint.

The lineup, from left to right, is: Artemis (or Arrowette?), Robin (Tim Drake?), Kid Flash (no Impulse?), Superboy (looks like Conner Kent), Miss Martian (wait, isn’t she a Titan?), and Aqualad (huh?). OK, so they’re taking some liberties with the team, but I’ll need to see it to know if they ruined it. Aretemis is a character from Wonder Woman’s camp, but the images makes her look a bit more like Green Arrow’s sidekick. Also Aqualad doesn’t exactly look like Aqualad, but this could be another diversification move by the animators to make the show looks less like white people kicking ass.

No voice cast announced, but the series character designs are pretty cool. Well, except Superboy’s cargo pants. No, Bruce Timm is not involved, but Greg Weisman of Gargoyles fame is one of the producers! Sam Register and Brandon Vietti are also producing, who collectively have worked on most DC shows and animated movies in the last 5 years.

The show will premiere this fall for the 2010/2011 season with a full season order of 26 half hour episodes.

In the late 90s, Metal Slug was to the Neo Geo’s answer to the NES and SNES Contra games. It was a side-scrolling 2-d blastfest which bought back memories of classic shoot-em-ups of old, while at the same time injecting a twisted sense of humor. After picking a character, you (and a friend if playing co-op) must blast your way through enemy soldiers, terrorists, zombies, mummies, aliens, and whatever else stands in your way. There is a storyline involving a rebel army and martians, but that’s not important. You’ll find several weapons and vehicles to help you in your journey. There are also POWS that you rescue for additional points. The main series has spawned 6 games (along with Playstation and portable entries) with a 7th heading for the Nintendo DS this fall. Each game in the series has added zany new levels, characters (Metal Slug 6 even includes Clark and Ralf of Ikari Warriors and King of Fighters fame as selectable characters), weapons, and vehicles. As with several of their franchises as of late, SNK/Playmore has collected the majority of the series on a compilation pack. This disc includes Metal Slug 1 – 6 as well as Metal Slug X, a remake of Metal Slug 2 released on the original Playstation. Beside motion controls on the Wii and Ad-hoc wireless play on the PSP, there isn’t much in the way of extras. However, fans of the series will be happy to have the series wrapped up on one disc, where they can see how far the series has come along. Action game fans will enjoy the challenge and classic gaming feel that the series is known for.

DC comics have traditionally done well when animated for the small screen. The universe established with Batman the Animated series which concluded in Justice League Unlimted this year is probably only surpassed by Star Trek for its amazing ability to take multiple series and tie them all together.

Live action has fared less well. George Reeves had a good run as Superman, and Adam West and Burt Ward certainly made TV history as Batman & Robin (even if the show was more parody than adaptation). But The Flash got one season out of CBS, Birds Of Prey was panned and canned, and Smallville seems to be losing steam in its 6th year.

Apparently someone more than a few years ago thought the Justice League would make a good show. The Movie Blog is hosting the pilot for this show, which you can download right now. You could download it, but I’d advise you not to. Its so bad. Guy Gardner and Barry Allen are roommates. Atom’s costume makes me laugh just looking at it. Martian Manhunter is the only one who doesn’t come off as completely terrible. The “big 3” are nowhere to be found. These are all things that were possible to fix with casting, writing or simple asthetic choices.

The thing they couldn’t fix is the visual effects, which are pretty good for 80s TV, but do a disservice to the characters because they’re so distractingly fake. Green Lantern’s ring powers form goofy umbrellas or helicopter blades. Atom fights a kitten in local news weather quality green-screen.

Anyway, yeah its bad. Horrible actually. I think I’m having an allergic reaction thinking about it.

Justice League Heroes (the X-Men Legends-like game for DC characters) finally has a trailer letting us see some of the characters in action – specifically Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, Zatanna, and Martian Manhunter. It’s not going to change the face of gaming or anything, but it certainly looks to deliver the exact type of gameplay I’m expecting.
