$20 Game of the Week: Silent Scope Complete (Xbox)

silentscope.jpgLight gun shooters, fighting games, and Dance Dance Revolution are pretty much the only reasons people visit arcades these days. Even so, with so many gun games available, it takes more than just pasting a gun onto a cabinet to get a gamer’s attention, and Konami has never disappointed in this regard. Even back in the days with Lethal Enforcers and its realistic digitized graphics, Konami created many innovative entries in the genre. One of its best additions is the Silent Scope. It featured a huge sniper-rifle peripheral attached to the cabinet, and it simulated the experience of being a real anti-terrorist sniper (to a certain extent of course). You had to use strategy and planning in taking your shots. Shooting erratically like in other shooters will only alert the enemy to your presence quicker and make your mission that much harder. This tense atmosphere made Silent Scope unique from other light gun games. Several versions of the game have appeared on Dreamcast, Playstation 2, and even the Game Boy Advance. However, Konami has put all the games from the series on this Xbox compilation. It contains Silent Scope 1 and 2, EX (the exclusive arcade game) and Silent Scope 3 (a Playstation 2 exclusive entry featuring a stage select). Like most shooters, the games tend to be short. However, the games contain several unlockable extras that should extend the replay value some. There is also a light gun available for use with this compilation. Although its a bit hard to find, it should act as a suitable replacement for the arcade game’s huge gun. Even without it, the controls work quite responsively. Getting 4 games on one disc isn’t a bad thing, and its one of the best gun franchises besides Time Crisis. Fans of the genre should check it out.

$20 Game of the Week/Lost Classics: Gradius (NES, SNES, Game Boy, Arcade, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, PSP)

gradius.jpgIn less than 48 hours, one of the greatest first person shooter franchises will make its return. So what better time than the present to take a look at one of the other types of shooters? Before FPS games, 2-d side scrollers (and their cousins the vertical scrolling shooters) ruled over gaming. They came at a dime a dozen, but three series stood out amongst the rest: Darius, R-Type, and Konami’s Gradius. Gradius had some awesome levels, cool music, challenging gameplay, and a unique power-up system. There have been several classic entries in the series, including the spin-off series Parodius, and the two-play cooperative Life Force/Salamander. Lets take a look at this classic series, becuase its as gamers, it’s imperative that we don’t forget where we came from, particularly in this age of Unreal Engine 3 graphics, Havok Physics, and Emotion engines.

$20 Game of the Week: Metal Gear Solid – Portable Ops (PSP)

mgspo.jpgPSP Metal Gear Fans have a reason to rejoice, for now there is an actual factual Metal Gear Solid game set within the series’s canon. The two MGS Acid games were nice, but their card game style can’t replace the stealth action that the series is known for. With the PSP’s control scheme, some big changes had to be made to the actual gameplay. Even so, it’s the same style of Metal Gear that we know and love.

Lost Classics: NBA Jam (Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear, Sega CD, 32X, Playstation, Saturn)

nbajamte.jpgBefore this game came out, I never considered myself much of a sports player, and save for various college sports games, I still don’t. Now sure, I got a few chuckles out of Mutant League Football and Ice Hockey, and I played Baseball Stars to death, but other than that, sports games were too complicated for me. That’s why me, and millions of others, enjoyed this game. While it wasn’t as complex as Madden or NBA Live, the fact that it was so easy to pick up and play made it a lot more fun to play.

$20 GOTW/Lost Classics: Marathon (XBOX 360, PC, MAC, Linux)

bungiemarathon.jpgBefore Bungie jumped through Halos with Microsoft, they ran the Marathon on Macintosh. Even before creating the instant Xbox seller, Bungie was innovating the first person shooter. Released in 1994, the first installment of the series introduced complex storytelling. Later installments would involve time travel, alternate universes, and Artificial Intelligences going insane. With Halo 3 hitting stores next month, now is a good of a time as any to take a look at Bungie’s other FPS series.

Wii firmware updated to 3.0U: TIME GET!

Yes ladies and gentlemen the Wii finally gets another firmware update today, bringing the system up to 3.0U. The primary accomplishments of this update? A fairly major overhaul to the Wii Shop Channel and a clock on the main screen. Hey it’s not exactly loading games off an SD card, but we’ll take what we can get. For anyone curious about the Wii’s new abilities, we’ve got the full list of known changes after the jump.

$20 Game of the Week: Vice City Stories (PS2)

vicecitystories.jpgUnless you want to shell out an extra $10 for the PSP version, this is a good deal. It’s the same thing as the PSP game which was released a few months ago after all. Like Liberty City Stories before it, this game is a spin off which doesn’t add a whole lot that we haven’t seen in any of the past entries. Graphical and control problems almost make this a step below them. The larger screen size makes the graphical problems more apparent than they were on the PSP, while the targeting system is one of the most problematic seen in the series so far.

However, the real draw of this game is the story, atmosphere, and of course the violence. Taking place 3 years before Vice City, the game follows the ill-fated Vic Vance as he is forced to leave the army after being betrayed by his commanding officer. From then, he gets caught up in a world of drug dealers, kingpins, and other seedy figures. The story takes a darker tone than other entries with it’s casts of racists, woman-abusers, drug addicts, and people who are just jerks in general. However GTA’s trademark humor is still in place, largely in part due to the radio stations that play a selection of classic tunes from the 1980s. The empire building makes a return, as you can take over gang-owned businesses and complete assets for them to increase the money they make.

Even though it’s badly in need of a shot in the arm, GTA:VCS is still an excellent game. It might not be revolutionary of groundbreaking as it’s predecessors, but it’s a fun way to pass the time until GTA IV hits this fall.

$20 GOTW: Panzer Dragoon Orta (Xbox)

pzo.jpgOne of the best kept secrets of the original Sega Saturn was the Panzer Dragoon series. It was a mash up of 3-d polygonial graphics (which were ahead of their time even to this day) and old-school rail shooting action. You took control of a dragon rider, and it was your goal to bring down an evil empire. The story might have been all too typical, but it was window dressing for the intense sky-high combat. There were two more entries in the series before the Saturn was laid to rest, and the fate of the series was up in the air. That is, until 2003, when the series returned on the Xbox with a vengeance.
