SDCC 2012: Preview Night reveals MOTU Classics Granamyr, third Accessories Pack and more

News is already starting to trickle in from SDCC 2012. As booths start to be set up by various companies, people are snapping photos and posting them online. We’ve already gotten our very first look at Masters of the Universe Classics Granamyr, the largest figure to be released in 2012. We heard about the helmeted dragon first at last year’s convention, where the fan poll determined his coloration; Red as in the Filmation cartoon or Green as in the mini-comics. Clearly the Red vote has won out. He looks very well articulated, but it is not clear if the figure is rotocasted or not. He is going to be available in December and will be priced at approximately US$80.

[UPDATED – added video from Mattel with some of the Accessories from the Great Unrest Weapons Pack]

Powetcast 127: Kate Upton Jr

I almost feel bad spoiling a joke that comes in the second half of the podcast by producing this week’s photochop album cover. But dammit, I laughed and said I would do it and I’m a man of my word. This also allowed me to image search Kate Upton for research.

This week we discuss the return of Sailor Moon, what it means to read Marvel Now, the casting of a Wolverine sequel, a Beatle teaming up with Bungie, and Kate Upton.

It wasn’t until I wrote this description and had everything all done that I remember George Lopez in an eye patch from episode 55.

Hello Kitty crossplays as Sonic The Hedgehog

Sega is celebrating the grand reopening of their Tokyo Joyopolis amusement park on July 14th with the debut of a new partnership with Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty. The result is a Hello Kitty plush wearing a Sonic costume. Yep, Hello Kitty is cosplaying as Sonic. The plush will be available at the park in late July. The collaboration will go worldwide during the summer of 2013. Expect more of these crossovers.

For more Hello Kitty cosplay, check out the Capcom/Toynami exclusive at SDCC 2012, Hello Kitty cosplaying as Chun Li!

Watch the Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Live Show

Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary live show - Kotono Mitsuishi, Toru Furuya and Fumio Osano

Last Friday we were happy to share with you the news of the new Sailor Moon anime series set to air in the summer of 2013. This news was announced in a 20th anniversary live show which has now been translated by the Sailor Moon fan subbing web site Miss Dream. We’ve included the video below. Here are the important facts about the new show! It will be an all new anime series starting in 2013. Kotono Mitsuishi and Toru Furuya will be reprising their roles as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask. Momoiro Clover Z will be doing the theme song but unlike we mentioned in our previous news item it does not seem that the song they performed during this event will be the theme song. After the video we’ll be sharing more thoughts on the video, what we saw and why Toru Furaya is a dirty, dirty liar!

A big thanks to the staff at Miss Dream for putting this together. They have also expressed their intentions to fan sub the series as it airs.

New Furbies are gearing up for the robot apocalypse

Two new Furbies dancing

Furby is back and he looks absolutely amazing! Furby toys were hugely popular when they first hit the market in 1998. They interacted with children who played with them in various ways and learned along the way. Needless to say the new Furbies look to be a vast improvement over the original toys. While the form factor is a bit different and one that some fans may take getting used to the things Furby can do are nothing short of fantastic. Check out this video from Engadget, as well as the article that went along with it.

Furby’s learning and degrees of motion seem quite superior to his nearly 15 year old counterpart. The eyes are replaced with two mini LCD screens allowing for many variations where little was available previously. His interaction with music and other devices is a real welcome change. It really seems like Furby is singing along with the music. How is this done? I’m sure it took quite a few smart guys at Hasbro to figure all of this out. Based on the box art Furby appears to come in solid blue, red, yellow and black colours. At $60 a piece it remains to be seen if Furby is ready to be the must have toy of this holiday season, but I’ll certainly be knocking over children and soccer moms to get my mitts on one!

Famicom Dojo Podcast: It’s All About the Cheevos

It’s nice to feel like you’ve accomplished something in a game, but rather than bragging about your accomplishments, doesn’t comparing achievements instead make you judge your friends for not being as awesome as you are? Vinnk and Sean reminisce about what they did before achievements and tropies, and if they really enhance the gaming experience — or just feed into already-present addictive gaming behaviors. Also: our first listener voicemail!
