$20 Game of the Week: Saint’s Row 2 (PS3, Xbox 360)

saintsrow2So maybe the original Saint’s Row wasn’t the most original game of 2006, but it was wickedly fun, and its open world action improved on Grand Theft Auto’s formula in many aspects. It’s shock ending guaranteed that fans would be clamoring for a sequel, and sure enough, THQ and Volition deliver. Other than a few tweaks here and there, the developer sticks to the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ school of thought. Saint’s Row definitely was not broken, and it’s time for gamers to take a return trip to Stillwater.

Koopa Kids: Secret Origins

In New Super Mario Bros Wii, Nintendo has brought back the long dormant “Koopalings.” These seven characters are supposedly Bowser’s children and appear as stage antagonists in several Mario games. It is said that during the production of Super Mario Bros 3, Shigeru Miyamoto based each of them on a member of the design team.
But when Super Mario Bros 3 was released in 1988 to Japan, the kids were not given names. Only a year and a half later when Nintendo Of America released the game did they get names. The localization team did their best to match their appearances with some obvious, and less obvious names. See how obscure they get!

Transformers War For Cybertron Video Game

warforcybertron Former 1UP and current Game Informer writer Phil Kollar has been teasing his big cover story for the magazine on twitter lately, and he just fessed up some details: “Yes, it’s a new Transformers game.”

Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions of the game are on the way, tenatively titled “The War For Cybertron”
Artwork from the magazine (left) shows Optimus Prime, and theres a hearty influence of The War Within, as action will be set before our favorite transforming robots arrive on Earth.

TheAllspark broke the story earlier this evening, but Kollar says images and a trailer will be online later this week. Look for the issue of Game Informer at GameStop very soon.

Lawrence Maroney, Voltron fan, forms the head

Having been on a bit of a Voltron kick lately with the ‘V’ Powet Alphabet article and my most recent edition of PowetToys featuring the Voltron I-Men and the halloween costumes made by Sindra and myself, I couldn’t help but laugh when a good friend sent me a link to this video of a local newscast from the Boston area. Lawrence Maroney of the New England Patriots told reporters they needed to sit down and watch some cartoons with their kids because they had no idea who Voltron was.
