New Years Beatdowns: A Maximum Letdown Special

First of all, I want to apologize, as I know I promised this last weekend, but I was too busy. Besides, Christmas isn’t the only holiday for beat downs you know. Get together with the guys on New Years Eve, and next thing you know, someone hits the eggnog a little too hard, and then next thing you know, this happens:

But why waste time and energy (and risk going to jail) by getting into a real fight when you can enjoy some not-so-classic video game beatdowns? Click after the jump to see some of the worst of the 90s fighting scene.

X-Men: Destiny trailer teases, does little else

First announced at New York Comic Con in October, not much has been talked about X-Men: Destiny because of all the other higher profile Marvel games to come out recently and more on the way (Marvel vs Capcom 3, Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions, The X-Men Arcade Game, etc). The story for the game will be written by one-time X-Men scribe Mike Carey. Beyond that really isn’t clear. The teaser is really just that. A tease. It looks like there will be many playable characters, but its not apparent in what capacity. We’ll find out more as Fall 2011 approaches ever closer!

Mass Effect 3: DESTROY ALL HUMANS

It looks like the Reapers are no longer content to work through third-party agents messing around in the Terminus systems. They’ve on on the offensive by taking over Earth!

So can Shepard get the galaxy to finally unite under the Reaper threat, or will the Council races use this as a perfect excuse to rid themselves of the human “problem” once and for all since the Reapers don’t seem to be interested in anyone else. (As Shepard may remind them: “Yet”.)

Lost Classics: The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy (NES, Genesis, Master System, PC, Game Gear)

Based on the popular British platformer series of the same name, The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy is one of those games where it’s difficult to place in one genre. Playing as the title character, a walking, talking egg who is a member of the Yolkfolk, you set out to stop the evil wizard Zaks, who has kidnapped your girlfriend Daisy and cast spells upon your fellow Yolkfolk. At first glance, it appears to be yet another me-too platforming collect-a-thon. However, the game instantly becomes much more, as you seek out items to progress and help the various NPCs., not unlike an adventure game You’ll even come across a few minigames on your quest. There were a few issues with the game, not the least of which is the the lack of a save system (on the NES at least), and game-killing bugs that get players stuck in a place and have to reset the game. Even so, Dizzy was a fun mashup of platforming, puzzle, and adventure gaming. Maybe one day, we can see a current-gen console update. Until then, this cartridge is a rare find,

$20 Game of the Week: Tropico 3 Gold Edition (PC)

Tropico 3 takes things back to the theme of the original game, which had you running a Banana Republic (rather than the second game which had you running a base of operations for pirates). Of course this time, everything takes place on a 3D map complete with a customizable avatar of the President. As the newly elected/appointed/installed ruler of a small Caribbean island, it falls on you to shape the island’s destiny while remaining in power for as long as possible. There are several factions you’ll have to satisfy, each having thier own needs. The capitalists want to see the island making good profits and having top notch entertainment, the communists want to see that everyone has decent housing and a good job, the religious want to make sure the island has high moral standards, while the intellectuals want to insure Tropico has unbiased media, good schools, and honest elections. In addition to the factions, you will also have to juggle your relationship with the US and Russia (this takes place during the cold war you know), so they won’t decide to invade your shores.

Super Rad Back to the Future Trailer from Telltale Games

I’ve been hearing about this game off and on, saw a video about the excellent Michael J. Fox soundalike, but now I’m totally sold — especially after watching the first movie again. Between references to Eric Stoltz’s short time in the role on Fringe to bona fide video outtakes in a new special by the filmmakers, I’ve had this movie on my brain a LOT lately. And seeing that they expect to make this 1) episodic, and 2) a monthly release for 2011 means I’m going to clear my calendar and have a much thinner wallet (well, credit card) come June.

Are you excite for this? Mad it’s not coming out for XBLA? Leave a comment and tell us what you think!

(Oh, did I mention the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray and DVD are out? Just in time for Christmas!)

Lost Classics: Metamoqester (Arcade)

Last week’s Maximum Letdown saw yours truly mercilessly tear apart a crap fighter, so this week’s Lost Classic sees me shift gears and praise an underrated fighter from the period. Silly name aside, Metamoqester showcases beautiful graphics and frenzied gameplay, not unlike something made by Capcom and SNK. You play as one of three warriors out to kill a series of monsters. The monsters are huge and tough, but thankfully you have an array of attacks to stop them. You can also team up with a friend to battle them. With only 5 levels, the game is short, but it’s still an awesome fighter. In a perfect world, we’d see a sequel, or at least a home version which lets you play as the monsters. As it is, if you come across the cabinet, you’d do well to plop a few quarters in.
