Fox Relinquishes Back ‘Watchmen’

Everyone say “Yay” now.

After some high-stress moments for comic nerds everywhere, Fox has resolved their dispute with Warner Bros. over the distribution rights of the Watchmen title. Originally stating copyright infringement and taking Warners to court in an effort to gain rights as a co-distributor for the Watchmen movie that will be in theaters later this year, Fox has settled the case on an undisclosed agreement with Warners, though large sums of cash and future sequel profits have been mentioned to be involved states Entertainment Weekly.

Both studios acknowledge the other’s follies in the matter, and though heated arguments and hurtful words may have been thrown about during the proceedings, Fox says it looks forward to the release of Watchmen in March along with every other geek in the country. You know, at the expense of film co-producer Larry Gordon’s folly for not buying out the rest of the rights from Fox when he had the chance of course. Thanks for the honking-big scare, Larry!

Possible New Zelda Countdown

It appears as though the possibility of a new Zelda game, or some new big Zelda news, may very well be on the horizon. On a sub-site for the Japanese company “Marvelous Entertainment”, most famously known for the Harvest Moon video game series, a single page has been launched featuring an odd yet obvious rendition of the iconic TriForce symbol in the form of a clock that seems to be counting down to a date a little over 6 days from now.

Whether this means that a new game is on the brink of being announced, or there is some other meaningful Zelda news to be released, is anyone’s guess. We’ll be sure to keep you all updated on this tidbit of news.

Dracula’s Curse Released for VC

A step that has not only been high on the wish lists of not only Konami fans, but oldschool NES fans in general, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse was released today for the Wii’s Virtual Console for the low purchasing price of $5 US.

Favored in the series for its early take on RPG elements and a vast array of stages and a varied cast of playable characters to be unlocked beyond top-class Belmont whip-toting compliments of Trevor Belmont, Dracula’s Curse has not only been desired for a VC release, but also has been highly demanded by fans to be the next installment in the “Chronicles” sub-series. At the very least, now we have the 1st part of that request. Here’s hoping the 2nd will be in the near future. For now, we have one more installment of classic Castlevania NES goodness to tide us over. REJOICE!

2008 – A year in Geekism

With the past 364 days behind us, you may wonder “What the hell was so special about 2008, anyway?” Surely there were a myriad of noteworthy events, such as a controversial new president elect and Gay marriage being banned, then allow, then banned again. However that’s all stuff that you could read in any retrospective article on a news site. What exactly was noteworthy about the year 2008 for the average to over-average geek like you and I? Here, we’ll take a look about the good, the bad, and the absolutely insane of this past year.

Arkham Asylum Teaser #2

So we have another teaser trailer for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Asylum game due out next summer. This one shows a bit more of the graphics and characters that will be featured in the game, including some nice shots of Killer Croc. If you haven’t heard already, both Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are voicing Batman and Joker respectively, which is a huge shout-out to fans of the animated series.

Keep checking Powet for more info and trailers of Arkham Asylum as they are released.

Obscure Find of the Week – LOSER

LOSERIn another kick-back to the beauty of retro gaming, I was called to the attention of a interesting little pocket of nostalgic gold not too long ago – a quaint little album of independently-created fan covers of Sega Genesis music.

LOSER: A Sega Genesis Tribute Album
is a collection of fan-made tracks from several of the popular games from the 16-bit era that graced the Genesis console. A wide range of classic and not-so-classic game music from several Genesis games are covered on the album, from the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco The Dolphin, Golden Axe, and even John Madden Football. Arrangements come in all sorts of flavors, from totally remastered melodies to those barely above chiptune-level.

Granted, while I may not agree that the Genesis was a “loser” in the 16-bit war of the 1990’s, I do appreciate the fact that a few brave souls managed to gather together to give the console its proper due – even if their choice of titling sucks.

MTV’s Call for Geeks

Are you a fanboy or fangirl? Would you like a shot at your 15 minutes of fame? Are you ok with millions of people seeing just how big of a dorky otaku you really are?

Then MTV and Anime-Expo want you!

Anime-Expo, the largest anime convention on the west coast, has seemingly teamed up with MTV to showcase geeks on an episode of their reality TV show, “True Stories”. The only stipulations of entry are that you must be between the ages of 16 and 28, and you *must* be identified as a true fanboy/fangirl of any one thing or genre in geekdom. I can only guess that the latter requirement is to guarantee that only the biggest freaks will be chosen and make the rest of us look bad.

Applicants can sign up for the chance to be showcased on the Anime Expo website. No deadline for sign-up is given, but the MTV website says that episodes will be filmed and debuted soon, so I can only guess the window of opportunity is short.

The prospects of this seem truly terrifying if you think about it. Or terrifyingly hilarious. One or the other. I look forward to seeing the results with a slight sense of dread.
