Resident Evil Wii: Umbrella Chronicles and RE4

A scan from Japanese Mag Famitsu reveals the rumour of a Resident Evil 4 port is true. RE4 will hit Wii in June with all of the PS2 re-release bonus missions and new waggle controls. The pricetag is going to be a very affordable $29.99.

Sadly, thats the good news. The Umbrella Chronicles game we’d heard would feature a “best of” all the Resident Evil games is actually a rail shooter. The Wii control will act like a light gun, not unlike the (terrible) RE: Dead Aim on Playstation. The story focuses on the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation and… oh come on, a rail shooter? This is the big news? I can’t believe they actually found a way to make another release of RE:4 sound interesting.

If you’re one of the 5 or 6 people who didn’t play Resident Evil 4 or were just PO’d that you got the shaft by not buying the enhanced PS2 version, looks like June is your time.

Oh… so conflicted.

I loved RE4 on the Cube, but I only rented it. Wonderful game, and great showcase of the system’s power. Then around the time I was ready to buy, RE4 on PS2 was announced, and all the bonuses it entailed… ARGH! I wanted the game, but wanted to keep it on the system that spawned it — kinda like wanting the Mega Man Anthology, but not getting the Cube version because the controls were all messed up.

Now I can sort of do that (since the Wii is “just two GameCubes held together with duct tape”), but I stil feel bad I never played all the way through the original.

Well, I’ve never been a fan of survival horror so I always steered clear of the RE games, but if anything is going to get me to play, it’s a rail shooter. I know most everyone else is dissapointed by this news, but I am actually a little intrigued.

my problem is that the existing deviations, the “Gun Survivor” series, are not good. Aside from that, rumors persisted that Umbrella Chronicles would take after RE4 more than a a series of light gun games.

Wheres the innovation?

I don’t own any light gun shooters for any of my consoles. If it’s actually any good (IF…), then it might be fine.

Well, Resident Evil: Dead Aim wasn’t a railshooter for starters. It controlled and played like a standard Resident Evil game, the only difference was that while you still moved in third person, you aimed in first person. The PS1 game “Gun Survivor” was terrible, but the PS2 game was decent in my book and I consider myself a hardcore RE fan.

I’m still looking forward to the Wii game. Heh, funny how Zac and I had a debate about the RE4 port the other night, I’ll probably get it if it has widescreen support, because I skipped the PS2 version and it’s been forever since I last played the game.
