Totaka Tidbit

This is not a new discovery. This has been a known piece of information since before I came upon the subject, but someone was nice enough to capture it on video for us, and that is new. For your trivial pleasure, we have Totaka’s Song and how to find it in “Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru.” Some English spellings of the title will differ, but it literally translates to “For the Frog the Bell Tolls.” Whatever you call it, the game was a Japan-exclusive release for the original Game Boy:

Notice how shockingly similar this game’s style (especially the music) is to Link’s Awakening? I guess he just reused some of his melodies.
I’m now interested in finding a copy of this game to try it out for myself. I bet it’s rare.

Kaeru’s similarity to Link’s Awakening is pretty evident upon playing it. LA has more polish, however, and Kaeru’s battles are fought automatically. A lot of the layout you can see shared between the two titles however.

The main character’s rival in Kaeru is Richard. He’s the character who appears in ‘Richard’s Villa’ in LA, a cameo appearance like Mamu (Wart). The theme song in Richard’s Villa is a variation on the main theme of Kaeru no Tame ni.
