MOTU Staction Wave 3 pics and more

He-man.org dropped a couple bombs on us today in the form of pictures of the third wave of staction figures from the Four Horsemen in addition to a couple of announcements.

The third wave of stactions include the Sorceress, Mantenna and Tongue Lashor. The paint applications on these figures are really something to admire particularly the Sorceress and Mantenna. There is even a glossy effect on Mantenna’s bulging eyes. Tongue Lashor is the biggest staction yet. They have posted some comparison pictures with prior wave statues to compare.

In further He-Man news, it was revealed that there will in fact be 2 (two!) convention exclusives this summer. Details to come soon as always.

Finally, the long ago promised pictures of Leech and Webstor will hopefully be revealed at the end of the week.

Aw, Hordak? Noooes!

It’s too bad that this line/show didn’t really catch on with kids. Then again, it sort of lacked the magic of the orginal, despite being very technicallly impressive. At some point in their first season it went from having all this potential to being a blatant toy commercial. Somehow, despite all of the different peoples they would meet, this Eternia felt… barren. I got the impression that the only people who lived anywhere near the spirals of King Randor’s castle were the handful of “masters” themselves. How is that possible? Sigh…

You were clearly living under a rock because it was wildly popular with everyone. The problem was that they made so many versions of he-man and skeletor that they became enormous shelf warmers and they were short packing the other characters to get more heman and skeletor figures out. Wal-Mart refused to carry it after that and with the major retailer out of the picture, it was no longer as promising a line for Mattel who was funding the show. Season 3 was supposed to feature Hordak and the Horde. Thats why the first staction that came out was Hordak. It was based on the figure 2-up they had already made for him.

That’s what I mean — the toys ultimately weren’t “wildly popular” if Mattel made the mistake of creating so many shelf-warmers. It’s not that I agree with teh Wal’s frequently-questionable business practices, but a crappy toy is a crappy toy, and it’s ultimately Mattel’s fault if the supply chain got plugged up with stuff no one wanted to buy.

On the other hand, Walmart’s stupid, stupid practice of NOT clearancing items that aren’t moving doesn’t help, and I’m sorry any business has to deal with them. You’d think that they’d at least want to make back some of their investment instead of being sure never to make back a dime… but I suppose if you have crap taking up shelf space it’s not as likely that they’ll waste their money on more crap that won’t sell.

It seems like a sticky situation, but I with the current evidence I reject the argument that it’s Walmart’s fault it all came crashing down.
