00:57 – Fit the Fourth Review
04:53 – Zaphod Interview
19:30 – Fit the Fifth Clip
What’s this, a filler week? Not exactly.
That’s not to say you’ll hear nothing from Fit the Fifth; for the first time you’ll hear from someone who isn’t Keith, Colin, or Tom talking about making this fit — Powet’s very own Phil Bond! Afterward, we’ll also share a completed clip from the fit, which will be totally completed for next week’s episode.
Look after the jump for an explanation of one of the more opaque references to a game project we worked on — including a downloadable demo of said game — and even a link to a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy game, playable online!
Show notes:
While we’re not bringing Fit the Fifth this week, we have a completely legitimate reason: the previous four fits were completed eight years ago and easy enough to put online (with thanks to Colin for remixing the final product). And while the majority of material for fits five and six had been recorded, very little had sound effects applied, and some line readings were missing from both.
The Not Them Production team is hard at work, and Fits 5 and 6 will be released next week and the following week without further delay. Thanks be sure to thank those guys for pulling this together for us!
Errors and Omissions
During the Zaphod interview, Caleb calls the restaurant “The Restaurant at the End of the Galaxy”. As a perfectionist, he apologizes profusely for this gaffe.
1013: The Game
Now a complete aside:
Something called “1013” (pronounced “Ten-Thirteen”) is mentioned during the Fit the Fourth review, and sort of avoided during the Zaphod interview. I had been developing a video game (that I never finished) from 1998-2000. Keith, Colin, Tom, and Caleb all provided voice work for this game, so we were used to working together in this sort of capacity. It was only natural to work on a project that had a chance of being completed — even if it was eight years later!
It just so happens that I have an alpha demo available online. Feel free to download and install it, and try it out! There are some missing graphics and sound effects, and after a certain point there is simply no more game to play, but it should provide a fun experience for the parts that are playable. Be sure to read the Instruction Manual for a gameplay overview, hints, tips, and tricks!
Infocom’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Apart from happening at about the same time, the mention of Ten-Thirteen is also appropriate during any discussion of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy because some of the gameplay was inspired by an ancient Infocom videogame.
The game has been enhanced with a graphic interface for its 20th anniversary — two variations developed by fans — on the BBC Radio 4 website.
