Sailor Moon 15 Years Later
by aDam, filed in Animation, Anime, Manga, Sailor Moon, TV on Mar.07, 2007
15 years ago today, on March 7th 1992, the first episode of Sailor Moon, “Crybaby Usagi’s Magnificent Transformation”, aired for the first time in Japan. The series spanned 200 episodes until it’s finale on February 8th 1997. It also spawned 3 theatrical movies, 2 specials, musicals, videos games and an immense assortment of merchandise.
Sailor Moon was based on a Manga series by the same name which began appearing in Nakayoshi in December 1991, 4 months before the premiere of the show, and ran for 52 acts over a span of 5 years.
At its prime Sailor Moon saw great success worldwide as it was broadcast and published in nearly every country in the world. In the mid 90s you’d be hard pressed to go very far without seing some sort of Sailor Moon merchandise. It was likely the most internationally widespread franchise of it’s time. Sailor Moon herself is one of the most popular fictional characters ever, up there with such greats as Santa Claus, Superman and Jesus.
Here in North America the show began airing on September 11th 1995 and despite a number of complications and interuptions finally had 4 of its 5 seasons released both televised and in a variety of home video formats. It was one of the first prominent anime series to find an audience in the west, especially in Canada.
More recently a live action version of the show was released starting on October 4th 2003 and running for 50 episodes which ended on September 24th 2004. This series was complemented by one live show and 2 direct to video specials which followed the series. While the live action series had only a moderate level of success in Japan it had little international appeal aside from fans of the original series.
Now 15 years later the show is older than our heroine was when we first met her and the phenomenon has pretty much completely passed. While like with anything there are still some hard core fans who continue to watch and discuss the series the world for the most part has moved on.
So let’s party like it’s 1992! Try to sit down today and watch an episode to try to keep the memory alive. I’d suggest watching the first episode to celebrate the occasion. A show like this is too good to be forgotten and the best way to remember just how great it was is to watch it and have it all come back.

Considering the age of the girls in the show, it sure is pretty creepy how much hentai there is based on the series.
March 7th, 2007 on 12:57 am
They were 16 by the time the series ended.
Um… that doesn’t help… hm…
Anyway on March 7th 1992 I was 14 so even though I had no knowledge of the series until September 1995 I can justify not being a pedo by such logic.
March 7th, 2007 on 6:28 am
Pedo aspects or not…..Sailor Moon was a great show.
I was just watching some episodes on youtube the other day.
There was an awful lot of filler crap, but those season finales were the shit… hands down, easily.
I miss Venus.
March 7th, 2007 on 6:38 am
Oh yeah. When you get down to the best 5 to 10 episodes of any season they’re always totally top notch making for a good 25 to 50 incredible episodes of the series when all is said and done. Still when I watch it I watch it straight through and find it totally enjoyable.
I think I’ll just watch through the whole series again. I always used to try to watch the show in it’s entirety at least once a year. I don’t think I’ve been keeping that pace up in the last few. I’ve probably only watched it through once in the past year.
March 7th, 2007 on 8:10 am
As you might tell…I really only have 3 settings.
If it’s not ‘Meh’, it’s ‘Let’s fucking kill it in it’s sleep’ or ‘I wanna marry it.’
When Sailor Moon first came out I was very much against it.
If only because I was the only anime fan at my art school. ( can you believe that?) and all these people would come up to me and ask me what I thought of the show. And I ripped into that lame ass girly show.
Fast forward a semester.
One morning I got up and saw the last 5 minutes of the 2nd part of the Tree of Doom.
I was surprised to say the least.
Certainly when the Sailor Say came on.
I get into class that morning and was telling a friend about the show.
“So the tree kills the girl and it bring her back to life. But then at the end of the show they do this PSA and go ‘ Today Anne learned a hard lesson about friendship…Hard lesson! Hard Lesson! The bitch died….that’s a hard fucking lesson right there!”
And of course I was hooked.
That was my first real Sailor Moon memory, positive one anyway.
The last Moon memory I have is sitting on the edge of my seat during the end of the Dark Circus saga…I think.
ChibiUsa gets blown off the top of the zepplin tent thingy and Sailor Moon starts chastizing the villian and I’m screaming at my tv. “Jump after her! Go go go!” knowing full well that Usagi can’t fly.
I mean, how do you top an ending like that?
Epic epic stuff.
But then I’m a sucker for fairy tales.

Yeah I think it’s those moments that just gets people hooked on the show. For me I ignored it for half it’s run and then randomly tuned in one morning halfway through an episode when they did the moon princess reveal/Tux learns who Sailor Moon is/Tux is “wounded” scene which was overwhelming to say the least. That was episode 30 of 65 and by the time they rolled over to 25 I was taping it and I never looked back. I’ve considered it my favourite show since.
I really love the Doom Tree arc. It gets a lot of flack for not being manga continuity but if you take away that non manga stuff from a show but let it take as long to tell the story you end up with Dragon Ball Z. You’re going to have 1 episode a week and the manga’s coming out at a limited rate so there’s not much else to do. But yes that whole 2 part ender, especially that last episode, was totally tits.
The Sailor says clips always got me. They were just so ridiculous at times. My favourites Sailor Says quotes are “Never run on a slick wet surface or with sharp objects in your hands” and “Brush your teeth twice a day and don’t forget to floss.”
SuperS was some weird. You think the season’s over and they throw in that last episode which is totally cool. And of course she jumped and of course she didn’t know if it would kill her or not but it’s Sailor Moon and even if her daugther’s life wasn’t at stake that’s just the kind of girl she is. Girls who kick ass are totally hot.
March 7th, 2007 on 9:45 am
Hell yeah they are.
I would kill to see some shit like that in a live action film.
She just totally let the badguy get away.
Told her to fuck off and then jumped.
They just fell like forever, and then the skyscrapers came into view and the shit got real.
Insane self sacrifice, just so her daughter wouldn’t die alone.
And then bam, unicorn.
Super gay and totally cool.
March 7th, 2007 on 10:37 am
They actually revisit the whole Nehelenia situation in the first 6 episodes of Sailor Stars. It’s a self contained 6 episode arc that almost seems like it should have been part of SuperS. I have my issues with that season but those first few episodes are top notch.
Anyway that’s just Sailor Moon for you. She’s not generally into revenge and especially not when exacting it would involve risking another’s life. But she was being sealed anyway so it didn’t matter if she just “let her go”.
I had seen pictures of them with the wings before seeing that episode but still didn’t see it coming. If anything I thought he’d just go pick them up or something and have the girls ride on his back. That was just beyond cool. It always gets me when they transform into their Princess forms too so that was just an extention of that.
March 8th, 2007 on 12:51 am
I never saw past the end of R, but it and Robotech tag-teamed to get me started on anime while in college.
March 8th, 2007 on 7:59 am
It’s refered by many as being a gateway drug which got them into anime. It was surely the first anime I got really into. It’s just that when all is said and done I don’t feel I later moved on to better things. It was the top anime show fo’ shizzle and the rest was good but never measured up in quality.
Anyway I got 10 episodes in yesterday. Good times.
March 29th, 2007 on 3:49 pm
I can’t say that it was the first anime I’d ever watched, or even been interested in. I was actually 16 the first time I saw Sailor Moon. I was baby-sitting for a friend of my mom’s and their little girl was infatuated with it. I watched the first half of the first season over the course of the evening and I was hooked. I’m a big fan of the manga too, but the anime is incredible.
And Sailot Stars was my favorite season I think. I loved Nehelenia’s character, her depth. She was so incredibly vulnerable but very strong and powerful. And not just literally, but even down to the way she carried herself.
And yeah, I bought all of the seasons, except for the third one (because the place I bought them from didn’t have it), last year.
April 6th, 2007 on 1:41 pm
I was born in 1990, so when I first started watching Sailor Moon in North America, I was like 6 or 7 years-old. It certainly was my “gateway drug” into anime/manga/everything Japanese, Adam. Last year, I watched through Sailor Moon in its entirety, including the specials, etc. I tried to watch one episode/movie/whatever a day, and that method KIND OF worked, but in the end I went at my own pace. XD
Sailor Moon is amazing, and I mean both the franchise and the character. Looking back, she’s really taught me a lot about what it means to love someone, and the selflessness that we should all learn to live with.

i feel really, really sorry for whoever wrote all of that. it’s the biggest bunch of nonsense i have ever read in my life. “Up there with greats such as Santa, Superman and Jesus.” what the hell? are you UTTERLY insane? you’re poor, pathetic Sailor Moon fans who can’t let go of it- the Sailor Moon franchise died long ago, and it never came -close- to Dragonball… nor Naruto, or One Piece. as far as fanbase and popularity… it didn’t amount to Dragonball. not even close, in fact, as the Dragonball fanbase is still the leading fanbase in the anime world, and its merchandise, as far as anywhere, has also been the leading license; as it’s made over 2 billion world-wide, where Sailor Moon hardly reached 1. you see, the reason why there actually hasn’t been anything other than fanfiction stories and fanarts is because the fanbase consists of women who don’t know how to program video games and such, as even men who know how wouldn’t bother because the anime isn’t something floating around in mens’ minds–and only now do you see a Sailor Moon game being made, on a nextgen console–the game won’t sell. do you actually believe it to? sailormoon had like 1 movie reference as far as i know, and Dragonball Z blew Sailormoon out of the water with its Toonami ratings.
the only reason you see so much fanart of Sailor Moon (which is almost ALWAYS involved with Dragonball characters) is because any anime fan who’s a female would obsess over this show, simply because it was the biggest anime meant for “women”, and because it actually offered some mediocre, character & fighting elements to the fans; but it was NOWHERE near “phenomenal”. what kind of person would say in their right mind an anime like this is “phenomenal”? do you really want to give that kind of credit to a junior high student, dreaming of pretty little princesses spinning around with wands? it’s borderline preposterous.
Sailormoon’s dead, and it should NEVER be given this kind of recognition. EVER. i gotta say it’s one of the biggest overstatements i’ve seen.
May 9th, 2007 on 12:23 pm
Ignoring your depressingly poor grasp of hyperbole (honestly man, do you really believe tv commercials for shows that claim the next episode will be “the episode you can’t miss”?), one thing that I’ve found (despite my own personal indifference of the series) is that Sailor Moon fans are a rabid bunch who still have vast numbers and are hungry for more. The more aDam posts news about it here, the more I see huge online communities come out of the woodworks, surging forth with excitement.
Honestly, I hate to be the one to break this simple fact about reality to you, but just because you don’t happen to like something, you’re going to have to learn that this doesn’t mean that everyone else in the world feels the same way as you do. But hey, kudos to you for spending your time running around the internet, trying to refute two-month-old Sailor Moon articles in your free time. Clearly you’ve got a lot going on for you there, and I see why we should hear what you have to say about “poor, pathetic Sailor Moon fans.”
May 9th, 2007 on 2:17 pm
This has nothing to do with liking or disliking, it’s the idiotic statements made by Sailor Moon fans who make the show sound more important than it actually is. They try to say that it has the “most widespread merchandise world-wide”, when that’s -TOTAL- bullshit. Dragon Ball has been the leading license in merchandise for over 10 years running, with 20 or so different variations of action figure toy lines, an assortment of board games and video games, as well as more things still being produced today. The last time I saw ONE Sailor Moon toy was back in 1998, and they discontinued everything simply because its popularity dropped–Dragon Ball, among other things, killed it. It just doesn’t stand next to the likes of Dragon Ball and some of the other successful cartoons out there.
“Sailor Moon is one of the most popular fictional characters ever, up there with greats such as; Santa Claus, Superman, and Jesus.”
You know, this could’ve passed without the last part. No one EVER even talks about Sailor Moon anymore–it’s gone. Dead. It doesn’t even get the smallest of recognition anymore, nor any honorable mentions… from anyone, but fans. The franchise never lasted very long, and in desperate attempts to spread the Sailor Moon plague these fans involve the characters with Dragon Ball characters.. in hopes of getting Sailor Moon noticed.
Bleh.
May 9th, 2007 on 2:30 pm
Another bit of trivia, that Sailor Moon fans just cringe at, is the fact Dragon Ball spawned the largest fanbase, as well as fanfiction material.
Dragon Ball began in the late ’80s-The ’80s! And it’s still immensely popular today. Not to mention Toriyama other insanely successful work; Sand Land, Dr. Slump, Blue Dragon, Chrono Trigger.
The Dragonball series spawned; 150+ Episodes of Dragon Ball (+3 movies) (10-15 games)
291 episodes of Dragon Ball Z (13 movies) (20-50 games)
60 episodes of Dragon Ball GT (1 movie) (5-10 games)
An insane, colossal line of Dragonball merchanise; Toys, and just about EVERYTHING you could possibly imagine
10+ movie and television references, honorable mentions on television, by other artists–many artists drew inspiration from Toriyama…
I mean clearly the proof’s in the pudding. Suggesting Sailor Moon’s character is as popular as Jesus!–is like saying the She-Hulk was the most popular Marvel character. Really, it’s depressing having to see these people obsess day in and day out, clinging onto something like this, and suggesting it’s the world’s most well known and most successful creation.
May 9th, 2007 on 3:31 pm
Perhaps I should have emphasized that bit about hyperbole a bit more, as you seem to have missed the idea – and the corresponding part of my reply – entirely.

I absolutly love sailor moon its the god damn best anime show ull ever c in a lifetime, but i dont like the endin of sailor stars cos shes naked, thats a bit wierd, i like the ending better in the manga version, but the anime versions still good too.My fave season is Super S cos it tells alot about chibimoon (mini moon) n pegasus, young love is so sweet!

@sunlight
Why is her nudity “a bit weird”? SOrry but it sounds like you actually dont consider it any weird but have been taking over a common prejudice.
It’s remarkable so many people seemed to miss the point regarding the nudity of Moon in the end, and that me whos writing mostly “perv” fanfiction never had a prob with understanding it immediately. Other than most other shows Sailormoon tries to bring over a message of that justice, light, purity, good, friendship, anything positive, always will overcome intrigue and chaos.
Why would it be weird that shes naked in the ending, the message everybody should be able to see is that shes completely, up to herself, bar any arm or gears, everything consisting of violence has failed to turn Galaxia back to the light, and the deepest form of purity must embrace Galaxia now or chaos will win. I never got why this got censored in the US version, or better, how can one thinking human, especially adults, mis-interprete a clear image of purity with im-purity, finding a neccessity to censor it… maybe they never read Hamlet (Sorry, what would it be in english to quote “Ein Schelm, wer Böses dabei denkt.”? A jester who would think evil of this?)
Her wings point it out she’s reflecting an angel, and angels usually come nude, up to the light inside of them. MOst likely the people who censor this consider the Art of MIchelangelo Porn, too, and medieval carved woodworks of holy Mary lettin Jesus suckle her breast to be obscene. :/ Imagine you say “THe light of purity purifies the evil in the final scene” and somebody comes up with “We need to censor this victory of good over evil, or lets photoshop a nuke into the frames, Moon kills evil using an atomic bomb, that should be acceptable.” O_o
The only weirdness found in Sailormoons nudity scenes are on the other side of the screen, the people that one would think they should posess enough IQ to get what message the story brings across, but they don*t. They condemn it perv when purity wins on the screen but afterwards discuss which Senshi is the “hottest bitch”, proving the problem with it is definatly in their mind, not on the screen.
September 12th, 2007 on 5:51 pm
Its amazing that though its so old, it actually still has a high level of poularity still. I still enjoy and look for the comics. Its difficult, but it works.:> I love it, and will for years. Loved it at 3, and still lovin it. I know, its kinda sad. Love all of you fans!!!

Hi everyone
Yay \o/
In case some of you didnt know this site yet — http://tv-links.co.uk/listings/3/2014
There are quite some episodes available.
Yesterday i finally got the “rare” 1999’s Sailormoon Soap-Tray in Ebay
September 17th, 2007 on 5:08 pm
I have to agree with almost everyone here. I have loved SailorMoon for as long as I can remember and even at 21 I still love her. It took me forever to get the last season but I finally finished the series and it was the best. My favourite part of Sailor Stars was when Uranus was knocked over the side of the building and Neptune was holding her trying to get her back over the top of the building and Neptune said to Uranus “You’ve been eating too many sweets.” To which Uranus said “I won’t take that kind of talk outside the bedroom.” I laughed so hard I about died. I think the end was beautiful, she didn’t seem naked to me but full of love and light and purity. And for those ppl that say it wasn’t a big anime and didn’t have very many merchandise and all merchandise was canceled, never to be made again, to that I say…I have the official Sailor Jupiter (and other senshi) cooking set (Makoto was the one that liked to cook). And the date made on it is…guess what? 2006. So obviously it’s still being made..and yes I do use the cooking set. Whisk, spatula, spoon, etc. And I use them while waving the cresent moon wand the makes 2 different sounds around while wearing the tiara (Jupiter’s of course she’s my fav) I got off of ebay and wearing the sailorjupiter costume I made one Halloween when I didn’t have money to buy one (spray painted track shoes from the 80’s). Oh how I love it.

the episodes dont work on my comp, wld u hav any idea y?

Sailor Moon is still alright in my book. She was the childhood ambition of everything I wanted to be. As I agree with those who’ve stated that her nudity towards the end was completely a form of art, nothing to be condemned, I also see from a perspective how that could be taken differently by a little kid. Hey, I started watching this when I was like 5, but my mom didn’t approve of the content at all. It does contain a # of themes that def. aren’t cool for the entire young population. I think it this series does attract a wide age audience, but as for that extra-hard-to-grasp-for-kids content, I believe that it should be considered mature viewing content and treated as such, and NOT as a general “kiddie cartoon” (so that no one gets the wrong idea).
September 25th, 2007 on 10:09 pm
Yah but also look at this. Shrek is made for children, right? But there are so many adult jokes and sexual innuendo that it makes me think some parts are PG-13. Especially the part where they see the Prince’s castle for the first time and Shrek says “Do you think he’s compensating for something?” He obviously doesn’t mean because he’s short…it’s obviously a male anatomy joke. The kids usually laugh at it without understanding and don’t even think about it later on. I think that’s why the last season was never shown in the US…but think about this…with everything they show on TV nowadays…if SailorMoon had come out now…would they have shown the last season? The last episodes? THink about that.

Sailormoon is fantastic. Its (one of) the first animes ever.
October 11th, 2007 on 9:22 am
yea Rhapsody, stuff is put out there now where regardless of if it’s right or not, kids will get a hold of it. i agree. Usually though, it will just either just scratch the surface of their understanding or :woooop: right over heads. i bet they would show the stars season around now if given the popularity to show it. :shudders: theres a lot more pornographic crap on adult swim now than there ever was b4. and i know thats not stopping curious & intelligent children from watching it. capitalism is vomiting all over us.

Ok, so this is for the idiot who calls himself Dan22.
I have a few points to make and the first one is that if Sailor Moon only gets talked about by it’s fans what the hell are you doing finding a discusion on some forum to abuse the people who still love it.
The reason that Dragon Ball Z, all its movies and merchandise are still around is because stupid men LOVE violence. I have memories of Dragon Ball Z, sure but they aren’t and never will be as nostalgic or give me and many others the same feeling as Sailor Moon always will. You can go and collect your stupid little facts and figures but I ask you this; How many dreams has dragon ball Z given people? How many times has it made people say “I can be anything I want to be; I can do anything I want to do as long as my heart’s in it and I have faith.” Oh and all those stupid men who say women draw fan art just because they can’t program a video game, next time a women does something that you in your wildest dreams never imagined it’s going to be a real slap in the face. And you know what, I hope it is.

It’s ok to be dorks every once in a while when it’s something from your childhood that you loved and remember fondly as the one good thing in your life when everything else was so broken…sometimes you have to just allow yourself to fall into something that reminds you that, if you try hard enough, life really doesn’t have to be as bad as it is…specially in your home life. At the end the guy gets the girl of vise versa…the family loves each other…and nothing is as bad as it was because you have over powered the negativity.

It was a good show that i think is still alive in the hearts of many viewers today. I have watched the first two seasons, even though i’m a guy. I, however believe it got strange after the first season ended

LOL!!!111oneoneeleven God I was like 5-6 and it was my first anime EVER and ever since then I’ve been hooked on anime, it was so fucking pwnsome. I swear I haven’t seen an anime that epic since well ever and probably never will again I really wish they didn’t discontinue it… seriously the world was better off with it than it was without it….it also inspired me a lot!

I’m actually making a sailor moon video game it’s going to cover the entired story line. I’m using a game creation system called byond, it’s very interesting. I’m actually a coder(Programmer) and Think this project will be nostalgic, as well as a ton of fun for fans all over the world. I’ll try to keep you all posted on this.

If you ever get anywhere with it I’d love to know Enigma, I love Sailor moon! It was my very first anime back in ‘98 and I still watch it on Veoh tv to this day. I really wish they would put it back on tv, kids these days could learn alot from it. They used to show it on cartoon network but now they only post stupid shows that teach kids nothing.

Haha I used to watch Sailor Moon when I was a little kid too! I was like 5-6 years old when I watched it. Somehow I got hooked again. I even bought a Sailor Moon clock from ebay! xD
Sailor Moon was amazing. It’s so inspiring. Sailor Moon should never be forgotten. It should be remembered. I wish they did air it again, and fix the old ones. I started watching the episodes on Youtube and I don’t like the dub for Serena/Sailor Moon in the 3rd/4th seasons.
If I had the money, I would so try to put Sailor Moon back on air. But it would probably cost a TON of money just to buy the rights for Sailor Moon from Japan. I mean, wouldn’t it be cool if someone extended the whole series? And what if someone fixed all of the episodes so they could all have “Sailor Says”, and so that the characters sounded the same in all of the seasons (well, you’d probably need new voice actors for that). And also, the 5th season! Someone should dub that. I wonder how much it would cost.. Does anyone know? Millions maybe?
If someone put Sailor Moon back on air, it would be a dream come true.

If they are so concerned about the money they should just have a Sailor Moon fund raiser! I’m sure fans would happily donate if it meant bringing there beloved show back to tv!

For Me Sailor Moon was always and will be always the greatest manga series has even been. It’s no wonder why it became such a great success. It speaks about friendship, hope, dreams, love and romance, such as things unfortunatelly i haven’t seen in any manga series or movie again. I was borned in 30 January 1993. The series came to my country when i was a little bit older. I was a big fan. Thenn i grew up and i forgot. Recently i saw one of it’s episodes in the internet.Until then i had became an enemy of mangas and anime. I didn’t want to know anything about them. It reminds me not only my early years but the things i knew then and i had forgotten. I became again a big fan. Thank you Sailor Moon.:)

well I was kinda hoping for a special Anniversary movie with all the sailor’s even Galexia and there should be some kool fights like in the sailor stars series and if they do make it I hope it is better than that dragon ball anniversary movie it sucked ass, but we did find out Vegeta has a brother.
