Update: Looks like there is indeed a new WWE game coming. Click below the jump for details.
Last year’s WWE 2k20 was rife with bugs and missing features. Is it any wonder we won’t be seeing a follow-up?
As of now, WWE and 2K games has confirmed that there will be no new installment of the WWE 2k franchise this year. This is no surprise as the future of the series was in the air even before the COVID-19 outbreak. WWE 2k20, the most recent installment, was the first developed solely by Visual Concepts, as opposed to co-developing alongside longtime franchise developer Yukes. As such, it launched with sub par graphics, several bugs, and missing features. Things got so bad that at one point Sony issued refunds to anyone who bought the digital version of the game from the PlayStation Network Store, and a bug caused the game to be unplayable on New Years day of this year. Even now, several months later, and after several patches, the game still has unresolved issues that have yet to be addressed. The rumor floating around was that WWE 2k21 will be canceled in favor of a new non-simulation WWE title. At least half of this rumor is true. As for the other half, WWE CFO Frank Riddick announced that they will be sharing details of the franchise’s future this coming Monday at 10 am EST. For now, we’ll see what this will entail. This rumor was confirmed this morning by WWE and 2K games. So while WWE2k will get a year off, we will be getting a new WWE game this year. For now, if 2k wishes to continue working with the WWE license, it’s clear that they will have to go back to the drawing board if and when they produce the next entry in the WWE 2k franchise. In the meantime, fans looking for some non-WWE squared circle gaming can check out Fire Pro Wrestling World on Steam and PS4, Chikara Action Arcade on Steam, and the upcoming Retromania Wrestling coming to Switch, Steam, PS4, and Xbox One this July. If you were watching WWE Monday Night Raw last week, you know that WCW/WWE Sensation Goldberg is available as a pre-order bonus for WWE 2k17. Here’s the trailer for those who missed it:
This isn’t the first time Goldberg has shown up in the series. He was featured in WWE 2k14 as one of the many unlockable characters in the game’s Wrestlemania Showcase mode. In addition, next week during E3, WWE Artist Rob Schamberger will be on hand to reveal other members of the roster. Considering the game is due on October 25, this is surprisingly early. Of course this won’t be a reveal of the whole roster, nor will we know much about the game’s features, let along cover athlete, as those details are usually revealed around Summerslam.

WWE Hall of Famer Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator will be this year’s preorder bonus for WWE2k16, enabling everyone to finally fulfill their dream of putting Randy Orton against a killer robot from the future. He’ll be joining Alexia Bliss, Page, Dean Ambrose, Finn Balor, and Daniel Bryan as one of 120+ unique characters who will be in this year’s game. One superstar who won’t be a part of this year’s game is Terry Bolla, a.k.a Hulk Hogan due to the events of this past weekend. Stone Cold Steve Austin is this year’s cover athlete, and there are rumors that the game’s main mode will center around him and the attitude error. This will most likely mean that the game’s Showcase mode, introduced in WWE 2k15, will probably have a section centered around him. Of course this is all speculation, as more info on this year’s game, including it’s roster, will be revealed later on this year, usually around Summerslam. The game itself is scheduled to hit stores on October 27 of this year.
So this is one of those rare non-gaming Lost Classics, but it’s justified since there are plenty of games based on the WWF (or WWE as it’s called now), and there are plenty of games featuring hip hop music. [Read the rest of this entry…]
This was the big one for a lot of those following at home. Mattel had some big announcements to make including Ghostbusters, Voltron, DC Universe and most especially Masters of the Universe (MOTU). ActionFigurePics actually got video of the whole presentation (seen above). I will not attempt to summarize in neat bullet point form the contents of the panel after the jump. Get ready because there were some big announcements!
