Famicom Dojo Podcast: Timed Exclusives

The Wii U exclusive Zombi U is a sequel (of sorts) to Ubisoft’s first game, but many people already want it on other platforms. Some people won’t play Bayonetta 2 as long as it’s on Nintendo’s new console, even though Nintendo was the company that published it. Rayman Legends looks amazing, but — again — is only available on the Wii U. Do these hopers hope agains hope, or are their predictions as futile as that of an impending apocalype purportedly predicted by Mayans thousands of years ago?

Sean and Vinnk examine exclusivity: console games, DLC, games developed by second parties that made their way to a competitor’s console, or stuff that third-party developers swore would never be released on other platforms, but somehow made their way their anyway.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: Wii U Be Mine

For as long as the Wii has been around, fans and critics alike maligned it for not supporting the HD or hardcore gaming crowd. There’s no way it can be a success! Now that the Wii U is out, supporting even HDMI out of the box (a first for consoles), and now it has a hard time supporting older televisions and standard definition. Nintendo is turning its back on classic gaming!

Vinnk and Sean explore why the launch of the Wii U wasn’t quite the same as that of its predecessor (also the only console launch of any kind since the Wii), wonder how it will stack up against the eventual and unannounced competition as it ages, and discuss the importance of getting a cake from the Japanese police department. Oh, and the wisdom of releasing Mass Effect 3 for full price when all three games are available on other consoles for the same amount.

Powetcast 145: Late and Incomplete

Better late than never?

A few days before the American Thanksgiving holiday we recorded a podcast talking about the Wii U and shared some Thanksgiving and Black Friday stories.

Unfortunatly due to some kind of recording error (likely I forgot to hit a button to save) we lost the second half of the show. All that survives really is most of the Wii U stuff. Sorry!

We will try harder next time, I promise.

Lost Classics: Nintendo Power (Gaming Magazine)

This past month, Nintendo Power announced that it would not be continuing its groundbreaking gaming magazine, Nintendo Power. The magazine, which has been in print for 24 years, will end with its December 2012 issue. For many gamers, myself included, this will be the end of an era. Although I had stopped reading it long ago , I remember it as one of the best gaming magazines ever created. I had a subscription since 5th grade and kept reading it all the way through the middle of my sophomore year in high school when I got my Playstation. Every month in between, I remember eagerly waiting beside my mailbox for my book to come through. The extras were awesome as well. When my mother first bought me a subscription, it came with 4 free guides: A book about Game Boy, A book about the then-upcoming SNES, Mario Mania (A game about all things Mario) and the NES Atlas (A guide with the maps of all the levels in games such as Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man). Even today, it remains the gold standard in printed gaming journalism, even if it’s obviously biased towards Nintendo.

Famicom Dojo Podcast: The Next Generation

With the unveiling of the iPhone 5 and the Wii U within a day of each other, last week was a next-gen extravaganza for two of the biggest juggernauts in their industry. Oh, and Vinnk had a baby the same day — the REAL next generation who won’t eve know anything less sophisticated!

Sean and Vinnk try to decide which of these devices they’ll be getting first (if at all) this fall, and if either one is a big enough change compared to the competition.

Powetcast 136: Killed By Gangnam

Sometimes a meme gets by the best of us. We can live on the internet and not see it until an elderly relative likes it on facebook in front of us.
This week we talk Finding Nemo, Cabin In The Woods, and Seth MacFarlane on SNL. In the news we’ll talk Robocop, the Wii U, why Canada’s internet sucks, and finding ourselves on the brink of war with Iran. Also: Gangnam style, Pikachu, and The Green Ranger.
This is a much better episode than last week.
