Stuff You Want for the week of 2010.11.22

Its Monday. Time to check out this week’s video game releases. It doesn’t appear that there are any big releases aside from Gran Turismo 5 and the new Splatterhouse, but there does appear to be several Black Friday deals on the horizon. Following @amazongames might be a good idea on Twitter this week for more deals.

Powet Alphabet: O is for Odiphus

Many who are familiar with the Masters of the Universe franchise are familiar with the diverse and comical cast of villains. Many of the characters in general were named pretty obviously; Fisto had a big fist, Skeletor had a skull for a head, Tri-klops had 3 eyes, Webstor was a big spider guy, Ninjor was a ninja and Spikor was a henchman with lots of spikes. The people naming these characters should have taken the moniker Masters of the Obvious. Not to be outdone by those examples, though, they went ahead and named an anthropomorphic skunk, Stinkor.

SDCC 2010: DCUO voice cast revealed, Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy

Beta keys are going to be given out to all attendees of the panel at SDCC for DC Universe Online.
We also got to hear ahead of time some of the big names on the voice acting cast for the new game.

Kevin Conroy – Batman
Mark Hamill – The Joker
Gina Torres (Firefly) – Wonder Woman
Adam Baldwin (Firefly) – Superman
James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) – Lex Luthor
Michelle Forbes (Ensign Ro from ST:TNG; Admiral Cain from BSG, and about a hundred other things) – Circe.

This game has been in development for a very long time under the art direction of now-DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee, but it looks like they are going about it the right way, with this news just further confirming that.

The New Spider-Man: Andrew Garfield

andrew-garfield26 year old actor Andrew Garfield has been cast as the “new” “young” “teenage” Spider-Man in Sony’s next film based on the hero. Marc Webb will direct from a script by James Vanderbilt.

Who cares? I mean honestly Tobey Maguire might be pushing 40 and the last flick the old guard did wasn’t great, but theres almost nothing about a new Spider-Man that could be remotely interesting now. Chalk that up to a decade of super fatigue, from when Spider-Man stood alone as one of the best to only a number in a field of more entertaining hero films.

What say you, true believers? Does this new Spidey have a shot or is this just another white kid in tights?

Press release follows.

Jazwares takes on the A-Team

If you’ve been following my twitter feed, @powettoys, you’ll know I’ve been pretty excited about this announcement. The A-Team is getting a toy line for the forthcoming movie courtesy of Jazwares. Jazwares is known for their Sonic the Hedgehog figures and Ben10 action figure line among other things.

It appears a 3 3/4 inch line is one its way featuring each of the four main characters; Hannibal, Face, Murdock and BA Baracus, in addition to CIA Agent Lynch. Each figure will retail for about US$6.99.

BA Face Hannibal Lynch

A 12 inch line is also in the works with Hannibal and BA as the first two offerings featuring electronics. These will retail for about US$19.99 and feature next to no articulation as far as I can tell from the pictures.

Lastly and most importantly is the van. The van will be available in scale for the 3 3/4 inch line and will retail for about US$29.99. It will also feature electronics of some sort.

I can already see the awesome cross-line dioramas featuring these figures. A-Team vs The Dreadnoks. A-Team take on The Empire. Yes, I will definitely be adding these to my collection.

You can see more images and the full press release after the jump.

The Video Game Art Debate: Is Ebert Right?

The views expressed in this editorial are those of the author and do not represent the views of Powet.TV, staff, or other members.

Roger Ebert recently laid out the case that “Video games can never be art”

I think he’s right and that its a good thing.

Do you agree? Leave a comment.

Powet Alphabet: L is for Laputa

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Since the alphabet is the building block of our language, the Powet Alphabet is the building block of what makes us geeks.

Laputa is an island castle which floats in the sky. These days it’s most commonly thought of as the castle from the movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky by Hayao Miyazaki, but originally the story of Laputa was told as a minor part of the classic novel Gulliver’s Travels in which a similarly floating island carries the same name. There are similarities and differences between the two, both of which I’ll look at to try to give a complete picture of what Laputa really means.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

So what is Gulliver’s Travels? It’s a fictional novel by Jonathan Swift from 1726, told in a narrative as if it were a retelling of real events from the travels of one Lemuel Gulliver. This story has been told time and time again, the most iconic image from it being that of a seemingly giant Gulliver being surrounded by the tiny people of Lilliput. Among the many places that Gulliver travels to in the book is the floating city of Laputa.

Transformers War For Cybertron Gameplay

Activision by way of GTTV on Spike has released footage of the next Transformers game. Looks like action gets pretty heavy with huge boss fights! Spot any favorite Generation One characters? Certainly looks like Ironhide doing that take down at about 1 minute in! A good mix of shooting and hand to hand combat will be key for this game, hopefully the promise of this trailer is realized when the game releases in May.
