$20 Game of the week: Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2)

kingdomhearts2_boxart_us_org_000boxart_160w.jpgIn 2001, the last thing anyone would imagine is Final Fantasy characters running around with Disney characters. Then Square’s Kingdom Hearts came, and it’s action RPG gameplay, deep plot, and high production values made it an instant classic amongst gamers. When the game concluded however, there were many questions that had been left unanswered, and even more were left over from the Game Boy Advance spin-off, “Chain of Memories”. Of course like any good series, this merely left players anticipating this eagerly awaited sequel even more.

Transformers Game Update: DS Details, Xbox 360 Special Edition

transformersds.jpgIGN has posted a preview of the pair of Transformer DS games. Sounds pretty interesting, the games are completely different and will feature levels and playable characters unique to each version. Perhaps the most intriguing detail is that it will support Nintendo WiFi Connection for “Allspark War” with up to 4 players in Team Deathmatch and other gametypes. Considering there is no online multiplayer in the console versions, this is a very welcome surprise!

Speaking of the console versions, today you can put $5 down on any of these games at GameStop (yeah, I know) and they’ll give you the movie poster. I placed my reserve on Transformers Collector’s Edition on Xbox 360, weighing in a $69.99. If past Collectors Editions are any indication, I should get a second disc full of concept art and documentaries in steel book packaging.

Capcom unleashes HD remakes of Super Puzzle Fighter and Super Street Fighter

sf2.jpg
While arcade perfect and enhanced for online play, Capcom’s release of Street Fighter II Turbo on Xbox Live Arcade was not without faults. The dated graphics and lack of widescreen support didn’t hinder the timeless gameplay, but it didn’t add anything.

Capcom is now committed to beefing up their support of Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network with new releases of Super Puzzle Fighter II in the summer and Super Street Fighter II Turbo in the fall. But they won’t be ports, they’ll be completely remade and redrawn from scratch to take full advantage of 1080p High Definition displays. The masters at Udon comics will handle the artwork and designs, while Backbone Entertainment will recreate the games.

1up got some comments from Backbone’s Christian Svensson that you can read here.

So the full title is Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix… wow, what a mouthful. A pity its not a fully new Street Fighter IV, but if Capcom insists on milking their classics, at least they’re not being lazy about it and giving the games the full on Mario Allstars treatments!

In related news, a not online, not enhanced, not arcade perfect, SNES port of Street Fighter II Turbo is coming to Wii Virtual Console soon. It will be $8, just like the regular Street Fighter II you just bought.

Obscure Find of the Week – Voltron 2007

VoltronWhilst feeding my current fangirl kick with copious amounts of Voltron goodness from the old 1980’s series, I happened across some news in Wikipedia mentioning a new Live-Action Voltron movie in the works, as well as an interactive Voltron series being produced. Now, I know well enough Wikipedia can’t be relied upon as being 100% correct on all it’s news, or even 75% more often than not. However, when I stumbled upon a supposed teaser trailer for a new animated Voltron, I began to wonder.

You can check out the video HERE.

Kickstar Productions also has it listed on their website as “In Production”. Does this mean we’ll actually recieve a new animated series that will wash the bad taste out of the mouths of those who watched “Voltron: 3rd Dimension” and cried? Only time will tell.

Gumblebee!

Signal Lancer from the TFW2005 forums took this picture of new Transformers candy being stock at Toys R Us.

Yes its Bumblebee, totally gummy. Theres also Optimus Prime and Megatron gummies, both taking their look from last year’s Cybertron series.

This might be the best Transformer to put in your mouth since you used the nose cone of your older brother’s Dirge for teething.

Iron Man Movie First Suit Revealed

ironmanfirstsuit.jpg
Courtesy IGN, we have the Stan Winston built suit for Iron Man. This is the first of many Iron Man suits the character Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr) will wear in the movie. Its highly reminiscent of the suit that first appeared in “Tales Of Suspense” where Iron Man was first published. The more familiar ketchup & mustard flavored suit will still be in the movie.

Directed by Jon Favreau, Iron Man is due May 2008.

Halo 3 Multiplayer Video, Beta Coming Soon

This is the first official video of Halo 3 multiplayer. You can either watch this embedded version, download it from Bungie, or grab it from Xbox Live Marketplace. As with the previous looks at the Halo 3 Trailer and the Brute video, this one goes about 7 minutes and if you aren’t paying close attention, you’re going to miss a dozen cool things. Also, we’re looking at Alpha build gameplay, which isn’t going to be the same level that will be available in the Beta, which also will be less polished than the final game.

Oh yeah, about that Beta test. It starts May 16th at midnight and will run through June 6th at midnight. Thats 3 short weeks, but more than enough to get a taste of the game. There will be 2 new guns, 3 new maps, and lots of new features. Watch the video for more. If 3 weeks isn’t a long time, keep in mind that this is only a beta test so that Bungie can try putting the game dynamics and the online functionality on a more diverse testing group, its not supposed to be a demo of the game.

New Avengers vs. Mighty Avengers

It’s been a big year for the Avengers, and between Mighty and New Avengers, Bendis has gotten plenty opportunity to write teams named Avengers. This Wednesday, Marvel’s two powerhouse teams come head to head, and lucky us, we get to see Leinil Yu show off his awesome pencils as the two teams duke it out.

Honestly, I don’t know what more to say about this. It’s New Avengers vs. Mighty Avengers. Either you’re excited already, or you’re never going to be. (Also, Leinil Yu is awesome!) Chell the preview below. Alright, I’m out.
