New Mortal Kombat Banned in Australia

It looks like any of our Aussie bretheren will have to import if they want to get their hands on the new Mortal Kombat coming out in April.

According to a inside source for IGN, the Australian Classification Board, which oversees all game ratings for their region, has denied classification for new Mortal Kombat reboot, and will not be allowing its sale in the country, including any previous pre-sale orders. The Board also requested prohibition of any displays for the game in local retail shops.

Warner Bro., who own NetherRealm Studios and subsequently the MK game itself, released a statement:

WBIE would not market mature content where it is not appropriate for the audience. We understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have the R18+ classification in Australia. As a member of the iGEA, WBIE is reviewing all options available at this time.

Thanks to Mortal Kombat Online for their extensive coverage on the update.

Remembering McDuffie: “The Terror Beyond” from Justice League

The late Dwayne McDuffie had credits on over 60 episodes of the Cartoon Network Justice League Series. In the wake of is death, I wanted to review one of his most memorable episodes. This one has magic, aliens, multidimensional monsters, zombies, gangsters, and Aquaman!

“The Terror Beyond” is from the second season of Justice League, and like most episodes from the series, is split into two parts. It opens with the US Military hunting for a very large target, revealed to be Solomon Grundy. After a rocket propelled grenade to the face, Grundy chucks around some tanks like they were nothing. One tank fires a laser(!) on him, and as the military prepares to capture Grundy and take him in, Aquaman comes to his rescue. Riding atop a purple sea serpent, Aqauman announces “If you want to live, come with me” and the two escape under water. Now I remember how awesome this show is. Ha!

Aqauman arrives not in Atlantis, but the tower of Doctor Fate. Fate’s wife Inza greets them, and Grundy is offered a chest full of gold in exchange for some task or information. As a more immediate reward he scarfs down two cupcakes. Doctor Fate arrives and is pleased to me “Mr Grande.”

Maximum Letdown: Strider 2 (Arcade, Playstation 1)

After a long decade of waiting, Marvel vs Capcom 3 is finally out, and the game features dozens of old and new faces. However, there was one fan favorite who was noticeable by his absence: everyone’s favorite non-ninja, Strider Hiryu. After helping to sell thousands, if not millions of Genesis units before Sonic came along, Strider went into obscurity (with the exception of the lame U.S. Gold Strider 2) until reemerging to prominence in the two MVC games, bringing with him a plethora of badass moves. Surely this should have been the catalyst for a Ninja Gaiden-like revival. Or at least it would have been, have Hiryu not squandered his comeback opportunity on a mediocre side scrolling action game.
