by William Talley, filed in $20 Game Of The Week, Games on Nov.23, 2012
This is the second half of our thanksgiving week special. Like we did earlier this week, we got two cheap games you can play if you want to avoid the crowds. These games are $20 or less year round, so there isn’t any need for you to get up early, camp out, or get into store brawls over cheap blu-ray players. These games are downloadable, so you don’t even got to leave the house. We call it Green Everyday, because you save green everyday! Now click below and check out some cheap goodness.
Retro City Rampage (WiiWare, Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, PC)
Retro City Rampage is the ultimate tribute to everything that was cool about the 80s. It began 10 years ago as a project from developer Brian Provinciano. Originally conceived as a homebrew project to remake Grand Theft Auto 3 on the NES. However, as time went on, he began to add characters and objects from other classic NES games, until he decided to make his project into an original downloadable title. Taking control of a henchman of a crime syndicate, you’re tasked with comitting a bunch of capers. The game contains homages to everything from Back to the Future to the Choose your Own Adventure Books. The gameplay has also been influenced by several 80s classics such as Contra, Metal Gear, and Mega Man. The game contains over 2 hours of original chiptune music, and several graphical filters inspired by various old school gaming systems. Despite some minor control issues, Retro City Rampage is a fun trip back in time for anyone who grew up in the 80s.
Dustforce (PC, MacOsx, Linux)
Dustforce is a platforming action game in which you play as one of four janitors. These aren’t any janitors, these are the world’s most acrobatic janitors, dedicated to cleaning up the world’s filth. You see, this is a world in which filth has corrupted everything, and now cleanliness is more important than ever. Thus, these janitors are basically what Ninja Gaiden’s Ryu Hyubasa would be if he chose a different career path. The 4 janitors (although there aren’t any differences between them) run, double jump, and wall run their way through the game’s environments, cleaning up everything in their path. The trick is to make it through the game’s levels fast as possible, racking up huge combos on the way. It’s fun and addictive, and it’s easy to get hooked. It’s only $5 in Steam’s Autumn sale, doing on from now until the 27th.
