Is there a right way to introduce your child to the world of video gaming? It might be a more difficult proposition for the children of adult gamers, whose boundaries are a bit less clear on the subject, but their non-gamer spouses (if indeed they are non-gamers) might keep them in check. Maybe. With Vinnk already a father of a 2 year old daughter, and Sean a father-to-be in 2012, we try to tackle those questions. How young is too young? How much is too much? What’s appropriate, and what’s deemed okay? I haven’t given a lot of thought into the topic, but one interesting dynamic is that I already have a bunch of games. �When I was a kid, we only got a couple of new games a year. �My kids, should I ever have any, would have hundreds of games (mostly crap, to be fair) at their disposal. �Is it fair to just let them have at it? �Or should I set up a kind of “rental store” policy, to make them have to suffer through a poorly-chosen game for a week before getting to pick a new one. �Hrm…

I know you mention it in the podcast, but I didn’t see the phone number for comments anywhere on the site. I’ve shown my oldest daughter plenty of NES and SNES games, and she likes the good ones. I even had the SNES in her room for quite a while before she became glued to her iPod. With the modern consoles it is a piece of cake to set up parental controls, so I don’t have to worry about her playing my M rated games, and there isn’t anything that bad she can play from previous gen’s.

I would much rather her play games than sit and watch TV. She enjoys Scribblenauts which gets her to think and I picked up Wii Fit which she also played quite a bit for a while.

I recently picked up an Elmo Wii game for my youngest daugher (2) and she has a DS which she loves to doodle on in PictoChat. She enjoys it for small bursts and then moves on to play dress up or something else. Sometimes she does zone in on the DS a bit like you all mentioned, but she has plenty of other activities so I don’t worry.

Overall, I think I turned out fairly well, so why shouldn’t my kids enjoy games?
