SDCC 2011: Mattel Exclusives Announced
by Crazy, filed in Events, SDCC, Toys on Apr.29, 2011
Last night, G4’s Attack of the Show got the world exclusive reveal for all of Mattel’s SDCC 2011 exclusives. They were so gracious about the exclusive reveal that they only showed a few of the many items actually filmed while ignoring some of the high profile exclusives including the MOTU Classics item.
Continue on after the jump for the rest of the exclusives with pictures, details, and some commentary!
Hot Wheels
We’re pretty sure Doc Brown himself would approve of this exclusive from the classic Back to the Future flick. We can show you the box, but not what’s inside. We don’t dare.
Mattel has left us with quite the secret. It is just a shame they named the image “BTTFDelorean”. I guess we won’t know what is inside until the show. It looks like it will be retailing for about $35.
This Franken Berry™ cereal box with a Hot Wheels car inside will take you right back to being 7 years-old and watching Saturday morning cartoons. What car is inside? It’s the popular Dairy Delivery vehicle, of course, because you need some milk to go with your cereal! Shake the box and hear that awesome cereal sound coming from inside.
Dairy Delivery will set you back $20.
Barbie
To commemorate the release of the upcoming Green Lantern movie, Mattel will make a Carol Ferris Barbie doll available for sale at the convention for $35.
Monster High
Being that Ghoulia Yelps is the smartest ghoul in school, naturally she’s a comic book fan. Ghoulia’s on her way to NekroCon dressed as her favorite zombie super hero, Dead Fast™. Ghoulia comes with a miniature Dead Fast action figure and a Dead Fast fan fic book that she wrote and illustrated herself.
This line is basically Mattel’s answer to Bratz. Its been around for not quite a year now and has had a warm reception within the industry. Ghoulia will sell for $20.
Green Lantern
This figure was interesting because in the video Scott said specifically that he would be “first available at comic-con”, suggesting that, as part of the Movie Masters line he will get a wider release. The Batman Begins and Dark Knight Movie Masters figures ended up being Toys R Us Exclusives after they were available first on MattyCollector.com. Kilowog will be selling for $35.
Polly Pocket
This 3-pack was another piece that was left out of the video. Selling for $20, this is aimed at both Polly Pocket and MOTU fans. I was surprised by this one initially, but it fills a similar slot that the Mo-Larr set filled last year and for that reason I’m on board.
Polly™ and her friends are dressed as their Masters of the Universe® alter egos to battle out good vs. evil! Polly, dressed as She-Ra™, and Kerstie®, dressed as Frosta™, are ready to take on Crissy® as the evil Catra™.
Polly™ as She-Ra™: When it comes to dressing up for adventure, Polly loves to be the original Princess of Power™. Armed with her Sword of Protection and an Etherian Shield, Polly is ready to tackle The Evil Horde™ and whatever action awaits!
Lea® as Frosta™: Lea may not have a cold heart, but when she dresses up as the Ice Empress of Etheria, she can freeze foes in her path. Armed with a magic wand that turns anything to ice, Lea is ready for her next adventure to save the day!
Crissy® as Catra™: Crissy has cat scratch fever as the mischievous and notorious Catra. When in her Horde disguise, Crissy is purrfectly poised to make trouble for Polly and friends!
Ghostbusters
The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is a tough sell. Not because of the figure itself or the fantastic diorama it comes with featured in the video, but because of the price. $70 is a lot to ask at any time, nevermind at the same time all these other exclusives will be on sale.
Stay Puft is the largest item ever made by Mattel and sold at SDCC, standing at over 20″ tall! Our favorite squishy villain is made from soft foam and features articulation at the arms, head and legs. A huge city diorama is included in the packaging – perfect for displaying your entire Ghostbusters collection! He’ll be available first at SDCC, then here on MattyCollector.com.
Masters of the Universe Classics
The good queen of Eternia® is finally here to complete the Eternos Royal Family. Marlena isn’t coming empty handed… she includes her royal green dress, scepter and sword, plus an interchangeable space helmet head, rifle and blaster pistol to transform her back into her fighting days as Captain Glenn™, Heroic Galactic Adventurer™! And as an added accessory, Queen Marlena includes Cringer™, Prince Adam’s loyal pet and secret identity of Battle Cat®! Marlena is packed as Queen Marlena™ Heroic Queen of Eternia™ for SDCC then as Captain Glenn™ Heroic Galactic Adventurer™ for Mattycollector.com after the show. Each pack comes with all the parts you need for both figures, but each includes a unique bio specific to how she is packed.
I have to say that I am very excited about this figure. We knew a Marlena would pop up sooner or later in the line, but not like this. Marlena is one of the very few characters who I liked from the original show more than the 2002 reboot of the show. The newer show made her seem more subservient, whereas the older show made her to be a much stronger and more interesting character. Cringer looks great, but depressingly void of articulation.
DC Universe Classics
The video talked about some new innovations on this figure and I am very interested to see what it is all about and where else Mattel may apply the technology down the line.
Voltron
Check out the first ever Voltron action figure from Mattel! Completely authentic to the original series, he’s highly poseable with 22 points of articulation and can transform into different action poses. Comes complete with a translucent sword so you can “Form Blazing Sword!” Blazing Sword Voltron will only be available at SDCC and on MattyCollector.com..
This is going to cost $30. I’m not really sold on the look of the new combined form of Voltron, so the more classic stuff we get, the better. I will say the lion head feet make him like its wearing clown shoes and the white plastic seems a little plain. Aside from that, I imagine this will be a popular item.
Young Justice
Superboy comes in a cloning chamber for $20. I haven’t seen this line at retail just yet, so I’m not really sure how great an exclusive this is. Leave a comment if you have any ideas!
After the announcements were made on G4, Scott posted an update on the absence of Marlena from the video:
We filmed them but AOTS clearly did not air them.
The SDCC MOTUC item will be Queen Marlena. She will come with a sword, staff, Cringer (articulated at the head and tail) as well as an alternate head, space tunic with bubble helmet, rifle, gun belt and pistol to transform her from the Queen back into Captain Glen (or the other way around!)
She will be packed out as Queen Marlena at SDCC and as Captain Glenn on Mattycollector.com after the show. Both versions will have all the parts for both figures but each will have a bio unique to the pack out.
I’m sorry to hear AOTS did not show the footage we shot for this figure, but we’ll have more details posted tomorrow (as well as images and a video changing the figure from Queen to Space explorer) posted tomorrow!
And another update in response to a question about the Swamp Thing hands:
It’s actually not rubber. It is an entirely new process we patented. The closest thing I can think of is the old Art Asylum Star Trek Enterprise 6? figures (but not the same). It isn’t rubber like Clayface. Bill Benecke and the Horsemen really pulled off an amazing innovative toy!
Thats all for now. Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments.
