Bruce Campbell in “My Name is Bruce”

I’ve been hearing about this movie for a long time, and now I finally see a trailer. Bruce Campbell is the definition of a Geek God, and he’s a king of b-movies. In this film he’s playing himself and is charged with ridding a small town of an ancient Chinese demon. Looks like he’s playing with not only his own self image but that of movie stars in general. And even though the plot is ripped off Three Amigos, I’ll still see it.

It’s plot is also similar to A Bug’s Life.

I noticed two different Danny Elfman themes in the trailer (Beetlejuice and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, respectively). It seems his music gets played in a lot of trailers these days.

If it’s similar to A Bug’s Life then that’s because it’s similar to 7 Samurai which A Bug’s Life was based on.

It’s not really similar to either of those, unless you’re going to get as generic as “bad thing happens to small town, small town enlists washed-out hero(es), hero(es) repel(s) bad thing at heavy personal cost”.

In that case, this movie is also like Blazing Saddles. But then maybe that movie was designed to make fun of westerns like Magnificent Seven — which was also based on Seven Samurai.

No, it is like a Bug’s Life in that the Circus Bugs thought it was just another gig and they realize it’s real. They aren’t washed up heroes, they’re actors who misunderstood why they were there until it was too late. Those other examples– not so much.
