City of Heroes to hit the SilverScreen?

It would appear since so many movies recently have been based off of comic and gaming heroes such as Spider-Man and the upcoming Iron-Man film, that even the more ambiguous names in the hero world want a piece of the fame.

Tom DeSanto, who produced the Transformers movie slated to release next month, has announced he plans on bringing the multiplayer online RPG City of Heroes into the cinama world that has made so many other heroes blockbuster hits. DeSanto states that he wishes to take advantage of the variety of protaganists that could come from the game’s “mix-n-match” hero creation theme.

“You also haven’t seen a big superheroes vs. aliens movie. I see this as the next big superhero franchise.”

There’s also talk of DeSanto making a TV series based on the game as well. Given the influx of such hero movies as of late, this seems to look like it will either be genius or a complete flop.

Ugh.

There’s no story here. It’s an MMO fer chrissakes. He states the scenario for the film as if he expects everyone to nod in understanding, but he’s referring to the end of the Beta period that I’m sure few of the current players have heard about, and even fewer actually played. And it’s gone so beyond that now.

Not to mention the game is a derivative work of existing comics — the entire Villains chain of islands is deliberately meant to be evocative of a similar locale where Magneto (once? currently?) rules.

The Rikti invasion IS part of the backstory for City of Heroes. It’s the reason the city is divided by the war walls and was the LAST major event to occur in the backstory of the CoH universe(at least until City of Villains added some new nuggets to it).

Right, of course, but how many players in the years since that backstory was established have bothered with those explanations? The only obvious artifact left from that is the Rikti Crash Site (which is high level, and I never had a chance to visit).

This is stupid. I game and read comics but since I’ve never played CoH I have no interest. Maybe if everyone played CoH this would be called for but it’s not even the most popular MMO by a long shot so what are they really hoping for?

People like comic movies based on characters they like, not some random generic guy in tights.

Hell, I’ve played CoH and I have no interest in a movie. It’d be about the main superheroes, which you never get to play, and have no meaningful interaction with during the game. The end result is that I don’t care about them, even if I know who they are.

I got their comic for free when I played (which was indeed about these characters), but I barely read it, and dropped completely off when they started charging people for it. Pfff.

People go in droves to see Spiderman and Batman because those characters are icons, despite also being commercial products. CoH is JUST a commercial product. There’s no money in this.

I was glad when I saw Warwitch hanging around because it had looked like she was dead(or something like ascended) at the end of the arch.
It could be good, but its not something I’m holding my breath for.
