Blue Dragon anime coming to US

Blue Dragon is a game for Xbox 360 I’ve had my eye on for a while. Why?

The original game is the first time that Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest character designer and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, and Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu have collaborated since the classic roleplaying game Chrono Trigger. The game debuted in Japan on December 7, 2006, and will arrive in America on August 15, 2007.

Yes, while Chrono Cross never met my expectations for a sequel, and Chrono Break never happened, this is as close to a follow up as I may ever get to one of the greatest games ever made. This is not opinion, this is fact.

Anyway, Blue Dragon is getting fleshed out with a matching anime series thats just started airing in Japan this month. VIZ Media has announced they’re bringing it to the US, though theres no timetable as to when we can expect subs&dubs to be released. I’d imagine that given the Toriyama pedigree this show has and the push Microsoft has already made for the game that TV airings may be possible. I don’t know if this will be more of an afternoon kids show or something we’d have to leave for Adult Swim though.

I’ve been pretty excited for this game since I saw a big ol’ article about it in Game Informer. I may have to finally get a 360 one of these days.

I’m not a huge fan of Toriyama’s designs but that picture looks a lot softer than what they normally look like. I’ll of course give it a watch and with that creative team I’ll deffinatly be picking up the game (and an xbox).

There are certainly a lot of female in this cast. With 3 of the 6 characters being girls the odds are probably against it getting picked up by certain stations. If it does get popular I’m going to be super pissed if the first wave of toys is the boys and some random reacurring villans.

The show’s been solid so far, but like practically all TV anime these days, there’s a slight drop in quality from the first to the second episode, though it’s not nearly as noticeable as in most series.

Considering its pedigree, it should at least remain watchable, if not always entertaining.

The only relation this seems to have at all with Chrono Trigger is the creative staff, so calling it any sort of followup is presuming a lot. As far as similarity, it’s only skin-deep. That said, it looks like it can be a lot of fun.

Of course we’ll never see another Chrono game, but getting the creative team back together is the important thing.
