Transformers 2007: Hugo Weaving is Megatron, 100 days until release

SectorSeven.org, the viral marketing website based on the secret government organization in the 2007 Transformers movie has been updated with a startling confirmation of a cast member. Use password “NBETWO” to gain access to the site, and you’ll find the following email…

Operation Hungry Dragon 2 continues. As of today agent H. Weaving has officially convinced S.S., M.B., R.O. and A.K. to oversee the Megaman issue. The recording will commence immediately.

All the years of investment into Agent Weavings public persona have finally paid off. We will monitor the campaign from the inside and report on its progress free from suspicion.

By this summer, the population will think N.B.E.’s are nothing more then figments of an overactive imagination.

Our power lies in our secrecy.

Just to translate some of the jargon… “NBE” means Non-Biological Organism and “Megaman” has been the code word used for anything referring to Megatron. As for the Initials, you’re looking at producer Steven Spielberg, Director Michael Bay, and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. H. Weaving is none other than Hugo Weaving, seen prominently as Agent Smith in the Matrix series and Elrond in Lord Of The Rings.

IESB reported in January that it was a neck-and-neck race between Weaving and original Transformers series Megatron Frank Welker. Now it appears that the choice has been made and voice recording will commence immediately.

Michael Bay has also updated his website with a letter. Some strong language follows after the cut…

Almost a 100 days left. I guess I should start posting every week? I’ve been working my ass off – the cut is really coming along -the shots —awesome. Some of the most difficult renders in ILM history. Sometimes up to 38 hours per frame. The Show West thing was fun to see the scenes play in a 1000 person house. But they just saw 25 minutes so it is hard to feel engaged because they are not seeing the full run of a movie. Harry called me to tell me how he loved it. I see all the dickwad talk back people who claim they have read a finished script. Impossible – I kept the only draft for the last two months before shooting. That’s where did major retooling to the script – yes the scene beats are similar but a very different script. We are still writing the robot voices. They talk about just 20 minutes of action at the end – yeah right. This is by far the most action I have ever put into a movie – I have 12 huge set pieces. Boy I get tired of these lame cry babies on the net.

Its a good sign that Bay is defending the movie now, and reminding us the leaked script was far from final

I hate how everyone uses celebrities for their voice acting roles instead of voice actors. It usually works out well enough, but it really takes me out of the movie.

I’m not specifically bitching that Welker isn’t Megatron (though I think it might’ve been a nice touch if he was, since Cullen is Prime), this is just a general annoyance I have with damn near everything animated in the last… what, 15 years? Look at movies like The Little Mermaid or Who Framed Roger Rabbit – Do they suffer for not having some famous celebrity as the voices? Definitely not. I’d say they’re even better off, because then I’m not playing “recognise-the-celebrity” when I’m watching.

And yeah, I realize it’s a draw to people, and there’s plenty of reasons (AKA dollars) behind why they do it. It still bothers me.

Uh… Kathleen Turner as Jessica Rabbit.

Some celebrities are really good at doing the transition to voice. I mean look at all the TV and movie actors in something like Gargoyles. And as far as the voice guessing game I watch enough animated stuff that I’ll be playing it whether I’m watching a movie with live action actors or voice actors.

And I wouldn’t be suprised if Frank Welker was in the movie somewhere as a dog or the sound of clashing metal or something.

If they cast Clint Eastwood I’d agree with you. He’s got a gravely voice, but most of his performance is presence. A lot of actors to well because of a commanding screen presence. Weaving… He’s got more on his voice than his looks (though Smith was a scary role). I think its a good match.

Like I said, I’m not talking about this incident specifically. (Also, I totally had no idea that Kathleen Turner was Jessica Rabbit. But Charles Fleischer as Roger Rabbit/Benny The Cab was goddamned great, and he’s no big-name celebrity – which is more the thing that I’m thinking of here.)

And hey, I’ll happily admit that in plenty of cases, it turns out great. I absolutely love David Hyde Pierce’s voice acting work.

But, there are also dozens of examples where it’s like, “Hey, this guy’s a celebrity, let’s put him/her in our animated movie.” That’s more of what I’m upset about – not about Hugo Weaving as Megatron, which I’m not really concerned about until I actually hear/see this. Just the overall policy.

I hate David Hyde Pierce but I’d rather hear him than see him, except in Simpsons where his character’s appearence and voice were made to match that of his annoyingly shittastic character from his unwatcheably bad sitcom I won’t do the favour of naming.

I’ve been to BotCon plenty of times to have heard the laments of career voice actors being passed over for the stars who “don’t really need the work”. That’s why I think TMNT was so great. Did I have any idea that April was Sarah Michelle Gellar? No I did not. And Patrick Stewart? He did [i]something[/i] with his voice that made me hear Winters, but not Xavier, or Captain Picard, or any of those guys.

Still, this movie was filled to the brim with plenty of voice actors:

Jim Cummings
Phil LaMarr (more than proven in Justice League and many other shows during/since)
Tara Strong
Billy West
Kevin Michael Richardson

I imagine most of the Transformers will be career voice actors. I wouldn’t mind if Cullen managed to pull off doing Ironhide as well, but I fully expect it’s gonna be someone else.
