Dragon Ball Goes Online In 2008

Japanator gives word that a Dragon Ball MMO is on the way for Korea and Japan next year. The game will be set some 200 years after the original manga, so don’t worry about teaming up with Goku or Vegeta as they’re all dead. Akira Toriyama will be contributing to character designs of course, and even play created avatars will retain the Toriyama look. Player classes include humans, Nameks and Saiyans, though you’ll start out as a little kid and have to grow up over the course of the game.

Given how popular MMOs and Dragon Ball are in the US, its a forgone conclusion that they’d make it come here too.

*insert joke about spending hours to charge a single attack*

The Japanese are rich at RPGs but their attempts at MMOs have been weak at best. Final Fantasy 11 and Fantasy Star online may have had moderate success but they are in different leagues than EverQuest and World of Warcraft.

Marketing this game to Koreans is a fool’s venture. The reason Koreans play MMORPGs is because they’re not made by Japanese people and Koreans hate the Japanese. That’s why they’re also the world’s greatest Starcraft players.

I’ve been watching the recent re-release of Dragon Ball Z’s Vegeta season set, and it’s like I’m in college, watching it in between class and lab again. It’s the closest thing to a childish soap opera ever conceived, with all the good and bad that entails. As a sidenote, it’s amazing how much better the Japanese version is than the localized one…I know it’s common knowledge, but I’ve never been able to compare the two like this before.

Despite my renewed interest, though, I don’t see it working if it doesn’t take place within the same time frame as the series and interacting with the main characters in some way. Sure, Son Goku is alive, still riding Shenron 200 years following the series timeline, but nobody cares about the almost completely undeveloped universe it took place in. It’s not like it ever was explored past everyone having Capsule Corporation devices, lots of martial arts tournaments, anthropomorphized animals, and people who’re totally oblivious to all the universe-altering stuff going on around them.
