Wizard World Los Angeles – Day 2

DC and Marvel scrimped on the news today (what, tired of talking World War Hulk, Amazons Attack, and World War III already?), but some interesting news did surface about IDW’s Scarface prequel, Gene Simmons diving into the comic scene, and some great Heroes DVD (and HD-DVD) news. Read on!
DC:
- There will likely be a Black Adam series after 52.
- There will definitely be another Uncle Sam & The Freedom Fighters mini next fall.
- There’s a Sinestro Corps special coming in June, which leads into regular backups in Green Lantern.
Marvel:
- Marvel finally let out the big secret about their X-crossover this summer, and it’s all about Beast investigating the lack of mutants. (Hey, here’s a hint McCoy – Read House of M.) There’s an “Endangered Species” one shot, followed up by 17 back up stories – each 8 pages long – appearing in Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, New X-Men, and X-Factor. The story is being run by Mike Carey.
- The backups start in X-Men #200. The David Finch cover is awesome, and we’ve mirrored it here:
- X-Men: First Class gets an ongoing series.
- There will be a Deadpool/Great Lakes Avengers special coming out, and I think it’ll be called Great Lakes Initiative? I hope Dan Slott’s writing this!
IDW:
- IDW is working on a 5-issue prequel to the movie classic, Scarface. The book will be called Scarface: Devil in Disguise. In an interview with CBR, writer Joshua Jabcuga says, “(Tony Montana) was an assassin before he even came to America. We see the scar; we see the little pitchfork tattoo on his hand. What’s that all about? I needed to know these things as a fan myself. And I’m not a casual fan. I’m pretty obsessive about this character.”
Gene Simmons:
- Announced yesterday at the IDW panel, Gene Simmons is starting up the “Simmons Comics Group.” He’ll be kicking off with 5 titles:
- House of Horrors – a horror anthology, with Todd McFarlane drawing the cover to issue #1 (in return for the cover, Simmons has to go to Tempe, Arizon to sign the comic at McFarlane’s store)
- Skullduggery – a sort of “horror comedy” written by Nick Simmons, Gene’s son
- Zipper – written by Tom Waltz, art by Adriano Lozano
- Dominatrix – written by Sean Taylor
- And lastly, Indy: Race the Galaxies – a NASCAR-in-space kind of book. It’s related to the Indy Racing League, which Simmons is related to. How incestuous! (Unlike having his son get a book.)
- Here are the accompanying images:
- Weirdly, they aren’t being released by the KISS COMICS GROUP. Paul Stanley joined Simmons to promote the new the GROUP’s KISS 4K book, as well as a future KISS Girls book (I don’t know, it involves teenage girls somehow), and a page-a-day webcomic.
- The Season 1 DVD plans are well underway. It will include an uncut 72-minute pilot episode, additional scenes created exclusively for the DVDs for post-season finale moments, and it will be available in normal DVD and HD-DVD format.
- Tim Sale‘s original paintings for the show (he does the artwork that the painter Isaac does) will be auctioned off on NBC.com in the near future, benefiting a charity chosen by Greg Grunberg (the empath cop – it’s not telepathy if you’re not sending, and he’s not psychic; look it up) the Epilepsy Foundation.
- There will be a book collection of the online comics they’ve been doing, which will also include other stories. More news to come at San Diego’s Comic-Con. Which is all the way in freaking July.
- They’re also planning on a book called “Saving Charlie,” which will cover the time Hiro spent with his beloved waitress.
- According to the Heroes staff, that Kanji symbol we’ve been seeing means “God sending great ability.”
