Blu-Ray doing well?

Accoring to an article in the New York Post sales for Blu-Ray to date this year are better than HD DVD sales. More specifically we can see that “The Departed” which was available in both formats sold 3 times as many copies on Blu-Ray as on HD DVD. To show this you can see that as of today The Departed on Blu-ray has an amazon ranking of 84 while The Departed on HD DVD has a ranking of 446. Not that either of these is very impressive considering the DVD has a sales ranking of 7.
It’s no secret that every week a number of Blu-Ray discs come out while HD DVD is lucky to have a single release. The numbers are certainly in Blu-Ray’s corner when it comes to that. What it still comes down to is the titles. While Blu-Ray has some huge studios behind it some of the exclusive HD DVDs releases are top notch films such as Batman Begins which was reviewed earlier this year.
While I’m certainly feeling a little frustrated having bought an XBox 360 mainly for the HD DVD add on I would not be as quick as the hordes of morons and biased people who lent their words of wisdom to that article. I’m not sure talking to Sony employees will really give you a good idea of how Blu-Ray is selling. They still think the PS3 is doing well. They still think the PSP is doing well! On top of that to mention that a PS3 is cheaper than an HD DVD player without mentioning that the XBox 360 plus HD DVD drive is pretty much the same price is just bad journalism.
All things considered the post Christmas lul is hardly a good time to judge sales of anything. We may have a clear winner and loser in this silly format war by the end of the year but it’s far too early to call this game.
