DC Teases With A Surprising Image

DC sent out a new teaser image today, coupled with the sentence, “Let the battle cry be heard in the land, a shout of great destruction.” It’s unclear exactly what this ties to, but keep reading after the jump for a full shot of the image, and a rundown on the surprisingly shocking characters present for it.

WARNING – “52” AND OTHER POTENTIAL DCU SPOILERS AHEAD…

So, first things first. Here’s the image –

So who’s present? Well, running from left to right, we have Big Barda, Mister Miracle, Kyle Raynor (still as Ion?), Donna Troy, Black Canary, Red Robin (from Kingdom Come), Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Arrow, Batman (clearly from an Elseworlds story), Mary Marvel, and what many people are convinced is Barry Allen!

And the dead people in the front row are Blue Beetle, Max Lord, Jade, and The Question. So, The Question’s fate doesn’t look so good, post-52.

Aside from reinforcing the recent revelation that the “the secret of 52 is that the multiverse still exists,” what else can be inferred from this image? Well, it’s tough to say too much, other than that it’s probably NOT related to the upcoming World War III, as Superman and Wonder Woman are supposed to be out of commission for the “missing year.” Also, WWIII is supposed to be where Donna Troy takes on the Wonder Woman mantle.

So, speculate away, folks, and enjoy DC getting the most that they can out of internet buzz.

Newsarama updated today with a hi-resolution version of this image, in this newspost. Aside from a couple minor points – still no ring visible on Kyle (though it could potentially be obscured by the flash of light), the Flash’s eyes are blue which is as close to confirmation as we’ll get on it being Barry, and that’s probably a Phantom Zone Projector by Max Lord’s corpse – there are couple huge deals worth noting, specifically in this chunk of the image.� Please note the Legion Flight Ring, and the Atom’s arm.

Oh, and also, Superman’s not crying.� He’s just squinting really hard. Or using his X-ray vision on Wonder Woman’s clothes.� Well, whatever he’s doing, there aren’t any tears.

First off, we know the Multiverse existed post-1986-Crisis because of The Kingdom (Hypertime), Earth-2 (the new Anti-Matter universe), and all the pieces that Alexander Luthor brought together. I saw nothing that implied this would still not be the cas post-2006-Crisis.

All those things being said… I’m a big fan of Red Robin.

And that’s definintiely Barry. The lightning around his waist is the giveaway.

How is Kyle not Ion in that picture? Phil Jiminez probably just phoned this one in since his contract’s up and he didn’t draw the bottom half of Kyle’s logo. Other than that, the costume’s a match.

I can believe that if half the Ion logo is missing, they’d also overlook that he doesn’t need a ring any more. Then again, that shiny bit where the ring would be might mean nothing.

I’m not digging the Wonder Girl-inspired Donna Troy outfit, though.

And the pussification of Superman continues, God damn it! What’s with that fruity pose of his, eh?

Despite Sean’s comment about the costume, I was thinking, nah, s’gotta be Bart. But I forgot for ten seconds that Barry can be anywhere, anytime, and just because he’s currently locked away in the Speed Force, it could be him from any given time in the past or future just skipping across the time stream at whatever point he feels needed. Barry’s the Cudley Cowlick of the DCU…if the Crisis on Infinite Earths novelization did nothing else well, it nailed that fact home.

The appearance of Red Robin should not shock anyone who read the first issue of Justice Society of America. So Starman wasn’t the only one to jump from the Kingdom Come reality…throw in Barry’s presense and we’ve got all sorts of shit hitting the fan in time for WWIII.

Nice to see Barda and Scott around for the action; given the presense of Intergang and Apokolyptic tech/pantheons running amock, it’s about friggin’ time. And is that Kyle Rayner as we know him, or as Earth 8 would have known him? Troy would just be that much closer to him, given her work as Darkstar and oddball hijacked origins….

I take back what I said. I didn’t notice the possibly yellow? sparkle where the ring would be.

And now that I’m thinking about this more and more, about who’s from what Earth, and what rules apply to them that don’t apply to our Earth, blah blah… It’s becoming more and more apparent why Crisis on Infinite Earths happened in the first place. Seems like bringing the multiverse back probably wasn’t such a hot idea.
