New Classics Mini-cons

S250 over at the 2005boards has posted a number of images of new mini-con molds in Transformers Classics packaging. Three sets were shown in all with both the front and back of the packaging. The breakdown seemed to be a dinobot set, a rescue set, and a construction set (with a tank).

While I hate that non-Classic characters are going into Classics, I won’t complain about new mini-cons.

The names are mostly pretty good too, very Gen-One sounding. Actually they’re all good, except “FIREBOT” I’d prefer the millionth re-use of Red Alert to FIREBOT.

As I was discussing last night with some people, “Classics” pretty clearly isn’t the name of this line, but, rather, a name for the sub-group of G1 rehashes. Nowehere on this packaging does it say “Classics,” and the only place it DOES appear is in the name of the size point (e.g., Classic Deluxe). I think it’s safe to say that this is just a case of Hasbro going for a unified look on the shelf, and this line being a kind of catch-all for anything that’s coming out.

Along the same lines, remember things like Dreadwind and Smokejumper. While nomanally part of Robots in Disguise, they came in a box that was essentially an Armada box without the word “Armada” on it.

In any case, I love each and every one of these Mini-Cons. Beast altmodes show this concept could continue for quite some time and I couldn’t be happier. The jet has an incredibly clever transformation and manages to do it in a way completely unilke any way it’s ever been done. I’ll definitely have Strongarm be the bad cop counterpart to Prowl’s good cop. The image of them having a captive Decepticon and Strongarm bitchslapping him before Prowl comes in and offers him a deal is just too wonderful for words.
