ToyFair 2006 – A look back: Marvel Legends

Toy Fair 2006 came and went pretty fast with a deluge of new initiatives by most of the toy companies. In all the press, it was easy to miss several of the more prominent announcements, nevermind the smaller ones. One of the larger initiatives shown came from Toy Biz on their plans with the future of the Marvel Legends Line. Things are looking up if you follow this fan-favorite line.

The next 4 waves of the main line were tentatively announced, each with its own build-a-figure in the tradition of Galactus, The Sentinel and Apocalypse. Each figure in the wave will come with one piece of the larger figure included. When you have all the figures in the wave (not including chase variants) you will have all the pieces necessary to assemble the larger figure.

The next 4 waves are as follows:

[EDIT: What I had believed to be Wave 13, the Giant-man Wave does not appear to be Wave 13 according to all the pre-orders on a number of toy sites. I have listed the coming waves according to the pre-orders and putting the Giant-man wave as the last wave, as that does not appear to be on any pre-order listings yet. – Crazy]

[EDIT 2: It appears as though the Giant Man series will in fact be a Wal-mart Exclusive wave. I have updated the listing to reflect this. I will look into when these will be available. – Crazy]

I’m looking forward to a depressing number of these figures and I’m sure I’ll end up putting all those build-a-figures together, with the possible exception of Giant-man. The sheer number of figures from the MODOK wave is an obvious sign that there will be more pieces to MODOK than the traditional 6 pieces of the other build-a-figures.

In addition to the growing main line of figures, Toy Biz has supplemented Marvel Legends with several supporting product lines in the form of Marvel Legends Face-off packs, Marvel Legends Icons, and Marvel Masterworks.

Marvel Legends Face-off (Seen it listed with both names)
This series is pretty much obvious. Two Marvel Legends figures will come packaged together. The characters will be classic matchups from the Marvel mythos. This series will be a collector’s nightmare because EACH set has a variant.
Wave 1

Hulk vs. The Leader
Captain America vs. The Red Skull (Red Skull is a new mold! Not the chase from ML wave 5.)
Daredevil vs. The Kingpin

VARIANTS:

Hulk vs. The Leader – So the Hulk with have a different face sculpt and the Leader’s head will either be tall and phallic or short and testicular.

Captain America vs. The Red Skull – Cap will come with his classic mask and the Red Skull will actually be Baron Von Strucker in Hydra colors.
Daredevil vs. Kingpin – Daredevil will have his hood back so you can see his face, but he will be wearing black sunglasses. Kingpin wears a black suit and an angry face.

Wave 2?

Punisher vs. Jigsaw
Wolverine vs. Sabertooth
Iron Man vs. Mandarin

Marvel Legends Icons – This is one line I’m definitely looking forward to. Icons features 12″ tall Marvel Legends style figures, meaning highly articulated and highly detailed.
The initial wave consists of:

Captain America
Hulk
Venom
Spider-man
Wolverine
Iron Man

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for Spider-man and Iron Man. Possibly Cap too.

Marvel Masterworks – These will feature higly detailed dioramas depicting classic comic covers.
Pictures here. The detail on these are impressive, but its not terribly interactive. I’m going to pass on these personally, but I know a number of people who would be interested in them. I bet if they did a few X-Men covers I might be interested.

Toy Biz had a lot to offer at Toy Fair this year. Marvel Legends seems to have a prosperous road ahead for itself for the foreseeable future.

I already have several of the Marvel Legends Giant Man Wal Mart exclusive Figures in Package. I have Thor, Sentry, Weapon X variant, Ant Man and Sabertooth. They look amazing, even though they are prototypes. They came from a Wal Mart in Emporia Kansas. They have the Giant Man Pieces, sticker and card back. What they don’t have are the stickers with the points of arrticulation, they have the wrong comics and have hand written upc numbers. So when the actual series comes out I will for sure own them all x3!!!! DavidAames9

I’ve heard of this sample run getting to stores by accident and in fact, I believe I even saw a gallery of them. It might have been on fwoosh.net. Were those your pictures?

No those should be from a person known by the name of firesprite on E-Bay. That was the original buyer for most of the ones on E-Bay. They were taken with a camera phone. I was a bit skepetical at first but I said what the heck might as well try it out. Well needless to say I spent quite a bit of money on them. I’m waiting for the AFA to reply to me about grading these. When you look under frequenly asked questions their site says that they do not grade prototypes. I have seen Rocket Boba Fett prototypes graded by the AFA. No a Marvel Legend is no way in the same class as a Rocket Boba but it is still a prototype. I have my AOA Weapon X variant all packed up ready to be judged. The AFA told me that they have never seen one so they would have to do some research. They also said that they will title them as what they are-if it is a demo prototype then they will label it as such. But their site contradicts the response that I got so I’m just making sure they will grade it so I wont waste my money.

I’ve never thought about have any of my stuff AFA graded. Those protos will make an awesome addition to your collection, especially after they’re graded. What is the url for their website?

I must also ask this since it seems to be such a mystery about this wave. How is Giantman divided up? With so many figures in the wave its hard to tell how many actualy pieces there are to him.

Hey Crazy, Yeah I never was really that big into the whole AFA thing till recently. The AFA told me that now that I’ve sent one of the prototypes to them they will send it to the CIB. They certifiy and authenticate all the AFA figures that need authentication. Once it is confirmed to be a prototype then they will grade it accordingly. well about the pieces-Capt Britain comes with the “right leg”-AOA Sabertooth comes with the “right foot”-Ant Man comes with the “right arm”-Thor comes with the “right hand”-Sentry comes with the”left arm”-War Bird comes with the lower torso??-Kity Pride comes with th upper torso and head-Havok,Weapon X and X variant I’m not sure. I guess the Sentry variant and Weapon X variant come with the same piece so at least one of them has to be in each case to complete the Giant Man from what I hear.I would say about 10 pieces or so to complete the Giant Man. I know of one already assembeled. Why open super rare prototypes to make the Giant Man is beyond me. Well CRAZY thanks for taking the time to read my silly little life!!
