While his limited availability makes him hard to come by, the completely unique mold and originality of the features makes him a highly collectible figure. If you can find him, he’s worth any reasonable price.

“The Gray Ghost” is fake TV show which exists in the world of “Batman: The Animated Series”. It’s hard to talk about him without getting into levels of fiction going deeper than the average scene in Inception!

The Gray Ghost character on the TV show is played by Simon Trent who is a character played by Adam West. In this way, the Gray Ghost is comparable to the old live action “Batman” TV series which Adam West starred in as well. Physically the Gray Ghost doesn’t look that much like Batman. He is more similar looking to The Shadow. In this universe you can’t exactly have Batman watching and old show called Batman. Similarities here exist, such as the Batcave being modeled after the Gray Ghost’s lair.

The Gray Ghost’s main and original appearance was in an episode of “Batman: The Animated Series” titled “Beware of the Gray Ghost”. The basic plot of this episode centers around a character who is doing copycat crimes based off of an old episode of the Gray Ghost show named “The Mad Bomber”.

The episode takes place many years after the Gray Ghost television show has gone off the air. Simon Trent is now an out of work actor struggling to make ends meet going so far as to sell some of the Gray Ghost memorabilia in his personal collection to pay rent.

As Batman tries to investigate a series of explosions that remind him of the old show, he comes to realize that all copies of the show were destroyed in a fire at the studio where the reels were kept. This leads him to track down Simon Trent, buying back some of his collectibles as a kind gesture. Reluctant to help, Simon is willing to give Batman a copy of the episode in question, which leads Batman to realize that tiny remote control cars armed with explosives are the culprit.

It would be lame if this message, that our TV heroes can sometimes just be dicks, was what we would take from this. Of course it doesn’t end here. This would be the part in the romantic comedy at the 3/4 point where the couple argues about something and we’re somehow meant to think they might actually not get back together after this.

Thankfully, the episode continues as Simon Trent dons his Gray Ghost costume and comes to Batman’s rescue. Batman shows his thanks by blindfolding him as he brings him to the Batcave and accusing him of being the Mad Bomber briefly. All of this while having a lovely heart to heart where Batman admits that the Gray Ghost was his hero growing up, and an inspiration for him to do what he does. This is quite reassuring to Simon Trent who’s down on his luck and is happy to hear that “It wasn’t all for nothing”.

There’s a funny slap in the face to obsessed toy collectors who surely watch this show as the villain of the episode is stealing money to pay for his increasingly expensive toy buying habits.

The episode ends with a video release of “The Gray Ghost” as Simon Trent releases his personal stash of film reels to his adoring public. Here at the signing we clearly see a child put his poster in front of Simon Trent and then as it’s being signed Bruce Wayne buts in front of the kid and tries to get his item signed first. What a bully! And what’s he getting signed? Just a copy of the video he just bought. This is the motherfucking Batman who has a shrine to the Gray Ghost in his Batcave and the best he can come up with is getting some videos signed? Weak sauce Bruce. Weak sauce.

Not content to keep his alter ego a secret, Bruce repeats what he said earlier, as Batman, when she says that the Gray Ghost was a hero of his, and then under his breath adds “And he still is…”. Of course he does this in his non offensive Bruce Wayne voice so no one clues in.

Some of the Gray Ghost memorabilia in the Batcave remains there well into the future of “Batman Beyond”. In the episode “Black Out” old man Wayne puts on the Gray Ghost goggles and hat so that he doesn’t get recognized by Inque who happens to be tearing up the Batcave. One comes to wonder if the Gray Ghost suit seen in the future Batcave is simply the one from the old shrine or if it’s the actual original suit that Simon Trent wears when helping Batman out. All other memorabilia in the cave seem to be genuine souvenirs from Batman’s encounters, and it seems unlikely that Simon Trent would still be alive this many years in the future.

In Batman fiction the Gray Ghost continues to be referenced. He appears in a few comics such as “Batman: The Gotham Adventures” in the late 90s and “Batman Adventures” in 2004. He’s also mentioned in issue 28 of “Justice League Unlimited”. The Gray Ghost is referenced once more in the “Justice League Unlimited” animated series episode “Epilogue” as a theatre is playing “The Grey Ghost Strikes”.

The Gray Ghost is an interesting concept of a fake show similar to the show it’s in, serving as an inspiration to that show’s character. Though there aren’t a ton of vigilante crime fighters out there basing their lives off of Batman, it does present a nice idea that many people are inspired quite a bit by their childhood heroes and use this inspiration to do good things with their lives.

Filming has just wrapped up for the Green Lantern movie and the long process of post-production is about to begin. The teaser trailer on the site has been updated to reflect the addition of the title, but its the same footage we saw last year.

The Joker is sure to continue to play a large role in this game, which is welcome since actor Mark Hamill says this will be his last time in the role.

A while back DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns teased onTwitter that a test reel of a proposed live action Blue Beetle series existed and that he might show it at San Diego ComiCon. Here a few days after the con, the footage is online. What do you think?

Johns did promise we’ll see Blue Beetle on TV soon. He’s writing another episode of Smallville, now in its final season, that will feature the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle. The same episode will feature long time BB cohort Booster Gold. It is certainly possible with Smallville finally ending that CW may try to spin some of the great DC characters they’ve had on the series into their own shows.

As for what a Ted Kord Blue Beetle and Booster Gold show would be like, might I suggest…

As far as I know its in there somewhere, but all I see is sideboob.

UGO.com posted 4 new character one-sheets that sufficiently tease up for the upcoming Green Lantern movie.

There were lots of announcements on the DC front from Mattel. To see the full Mattypalooza panel that mostly focused on Ghostbusters, MOTU, and DC Universe, you can go here.

What was revealed at the panel for DC product in the Mattypalooza panel was almost entirely exclusive to MattyCollector.com.

Mattel held a separate panel just for DC Universe Classics and Green Lantern classics. You can watch the actual panel here and look below for highlights. I found it amusing that the first thing said in the DC Universe panel was that there would be more reveals in five minutes of this panel than there were in all the Hasbro panels. It makes me sad that he’s not far off the mark.

SuperHeroHype has a great gallery of images from the Wanrer Bros. booth that has lots of props from upcoming movies including the Horcruxes from the final Harry Potter movie. That and THE CORPSE OF ABIN SUR! Yeah, you read that right. Abin-Sur’s corpse is on display in their booth for all to see.

 

Entertainment Weekly is running their San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) edition with a cover that reveals what Ryan Reynolds will look like when powered up as the Green Lantern. You can see that image above. We’ve known for a while now that the costume would be entirely CG, but we haven’t seen it at all until now.

[Disclaimer - This article was written after reading the first three volumes of the series with no knowledge of what happens in the story thereafter.]

Y The Last Man is not only a concise description of the story following Yorick, the last man on Earth, but also a question. Why the last man on Earth? The stage is set in the first issue with a series of events leading up to the ‘plague’, as it is sometimes referred to in the book. Everywhere around the world at that moment in time, every male of every species on the planet died. Except, of course, for Yorick and his pet monkey, Ampersand.

Once the story was laid out in the first issue, we follow Yorick on his way to Washington D.C. to find his mother, who is serving as a United States Representative in Congress. Eventually, Yorick is sent to find a cloning expert by the newly sworn-in female President, the former Secretary of Agriculture. A secretive government agent is sent with him to see him through on his quest. As Yorick’s journey continues, the main cast of characters expands from just Yorick and Agent 355 to also include the cloning expert, Dr. Mann (punny, no?), each believing that the gendercide was their fault for various reasons. Running into unforseen circumstances, they are forced to travel across the country from Boston to California. The circumstances in question, overall, are not nearly as important as the opportunity this conveniently provided the writer to explore the ramifications of a post-male America. What happens in industries dominated by males? Here is an excerpt from a recap to help paint the picture:

In the summer of 2002, a plague of unknown origin destroyed every last sperm, fetus, and fully developed mammal with a Y chromosome – with the apparent exception of one young man and his pet, a male Capuchin monkey.

This “gendercide” instantaneously exterminated 48% of the global population, or approximately 2.9 billion men. 495 of the Fortune 500 CEOs are now dead, as are 99% of the world’s landowners.

In the United States alone, more than 95% of all commercial pilots, truck drivers, and ship captains died… as did 92% of all violent felons. Internationally, 99% of all mechanics, electricians, and construction workers are now deceased… though 51% of the world’s agriculatural labor force is still alive.

14 nations, including Spain and Germany, have women soldiers who have served in ground combat units. None of the United States’ nearly 200,000 female troops have ever participated in ground combat. Australia, Norway and Sweden are the only countries that have women serving on board submarines.

In Israel, all women between the ages of 18 and 26 have performed compulsory military service in the Israeli Defense Force for at least one year and nine months. Before the plague, at least three Palestinian suicide bombers had been women.

Worldwide, 85% of all government representatives are now dead… as are 100% of Catholic priests, Muslim imams, and Orthodox Jewish rabbis.

Still alive, however, is Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth.

Think about that for a few minutes. Imagine the scale of what is being described here and let it sink in. Between each volume I have read thus far, I did not pick up the next for about a week’s time to let it all soak in my mind. The subject matter is heavy, but fortunately for us Yorick happens to be a pretty amusing guy. He was an aspiring magician and escape artist before the plague and that skill set has come in handy on numerous occasions since the plague. Also providing some levity, is the excellent dialogue the writer has provided to the characters, from witty retorts to pop culture references, one can feel that these are tangible people with unique personalities.

The United States government is not the only group seeking Yorick either. Other groups including the Israeli military and the extreme feminist group called the Amazons are also in hot pursuit. The Israelis are seeking the preservation of their country’s continued well-being while being led by an unknown source of information, while the Amazons, who saw the plague as destiny, seek to finish the job the plague could not quite complete.

Y The Last Man was a story written by Brian K. Vaughan with art from Pia Guerra. It was published under the Vertigo imprint of DC Comics and ran for 60 issues. It is now available in trade paperback form in a ten volume set.

“No”, says Nolan emphatically and unhesitatingly. He resists elaborating simply because, quite understandably, he says, “I just don’t feel comfortable talking about it”.

The above quote is taken directly from Empire magazine, currently on sale. Nolan also rules out Mr Freeze and The Penguin for his next Batman project, due in 2012. Though its less likely those omissions are a tribute to performances by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito.

By process of elimination, Riddler and Catwoman are still on the table, though more obscure characters could still prevail. Black Mask? Bane? Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter?

It seems that Cartoon Network will be getting a Green Lantern animated series possibly as early as Fall 2011. According to information disseminated at an investors’ day for Time Warner, the CEOs of Turner Networks and Warner Bros. both made comments about collaboration between their businesses and used this animated series as a shining example. The animated series will follow the June 17, 2011 release of the Green Lantern feature film starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan.

Batman: Under The Red Hood is the latest DC comic adaptation going direct to DVD. This will be based directly on the Batman: Under the Hood story by Judd Winick.
As with previous DC animated movies, they’ve sidestepped the voice cast of the 90s animated series in favor of some outside talent. Bruce Greenwood is Batman with Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing and Jensen Ackles as Robin. Villains include John DiMaggio as The Joker, Jason Isaacs as Ra’s al Ghul, and Wade Williams as Black Mask.
The trailer seems to play up this animated as being as close to the last live action Batman movie as possible. It comes out on July 27, so we’ve got about 2 months to go. Its available for pre-order now.

Yep, thats about it. Warner Bros has announced the third installment in the Batman series directed by Christopher Nolan will release July 20, 2012.

2012 may be over 2 years away, but thats already shaping up to be a busy summer: Star Trek 2, The Avengers, and Spider-Man are all releasing.

And thats about it. No news on casts, villain, story, shooting. Nolan has rejected out the idea of doing 3D, but is currently looking to do the entire film in IMAX.

Its only been, what, 5 years? Since we left the Bruce Timm universe, Cartoon Network has moved on to The Batman and now Brave & The Bold as the outpost of DC animation.

Certainly one of CN’s most successful (though strangely underrated) series was Teen Titans. I recall when the show premiered a few people around the comic shop suggested a better angle would’ve been Young Justice. Now it looks like they got the hint.

The lineup, from left to right, is: Artemis (or Arrowette?), Robin (Tim Drake?), Kid Flash (no Impulse?), Superboy (looks like Conner Kent), Miss Martian (wait, isn’t she a Titan?), and Aqualad (huh?). OK, so they’re taking some liberties with the team, but I’ll need to see it to know if they ruined it. Aretemis is a character from Wonder Woman’s camp, but the images makes her look a bit more like Green Arrow’s sidekick. Also Aqualad doesn’t exactly look like Aqualad, but this could be another diversification move by the animators to make the show looks less like white people kicking ass.

No voice cast announced, but the series character designs are pretty cool. Well, except Superboy’s cargo pants. No, Bruce Timm is not involved, but Greg Weisman of Gargoyles fame is one of the producers! Sam Register and Brandon Vietti are also producing, who collectively have worked on most DC shows and animated movies in the last 5 years.

The show will premiere this fall for the 2010/2011 season with a full season order of 26 half hour episodes.

This is your monthly reminder, collectors! On sale today is MOTUC Moss Man. Both versions of Moss Man will be on sale, but I think the version with the flocked ears will be limited in quantity since those were from before the running change to remove the flock from the ears as fans demanded. Reissue Stratos will also be available for sale. MOTUC collectors finally get a fairly light month with just that figure and reissue.

Also on sale will be DCUC Wave 12 as a set. This is the wave with Darksied as the Collect ‘n Connect figure. The Dark Knight Movie Masters Scarecrow is also up for purchase.
