Then I realized they were paying homage to some campy Red/Blue thing from much earlier. But that didn't explain certain things, like how they were ADAMANT that "this is the new Superman -- get used to it!" before "Red" even showed up. It smacked of afterthought. So now I wonder if it hadn't served as some kind of test run to see if they could get away with a Superman who only consisted of DC's held trademarks, disguising it as "Superman for the new Millennium".
